  • I typically pay 425-450.

    Good find.

  • What are the pros and cons of these compared to Aldi ones?

    • +4

Aldi ones are a "special buy" so are not available all the time. Last time appears to be https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/326402
Aldi ones support 'up to 90kg', the Thule are rated to 75kg. Note that you also need to take into account what your car might be able to put on the roof.
The Thule are shaped to reduce wind noise - important if you intend to leave them on all the time. The Aldi ones are likely to be noisier.

A (slightly) cheaper alternative to the Thule is the https://www.prorack.com.au/roofracks/s-wing - have that on my car and is good. Bought from Supercheap during one of their sales over a year ago, making it nearly half the price of the Thule. Fitting was fairly easy, but I'm mechanically minded so was not distracted by the weird fitting diagrams - non-mechanically minded people I'd suggest should pay to have it fitted. I leave it on all the time and don't hear a thing from it even at highway speeds. Would expect the Thule would be easier to fit than either the Aldi or Prorack, and the Thule does have a decent reputation for quality.

      • Thanks for such a detailed reply.

Definite con for the ALDI ones is replacement parts.
Thule have replacement parts for everything.
        Prorack/Whispbar have some parts…

        • If you take a look at the prorack website you can download the catalogue which has all the part numbers. Go to supercheap and just order the part number and you get it in a week. All parts available

      • Noisiers ones may be better choice to shoo the roos, if you plan to drive in the bush.

How come they're not vehicle specific?

    • -1

They are "universal" for cars that have side rails running along either side of the roof. If you don't have that, then you need to get "fixed points" (eg https://www.thule.com.au/products/roof-racks/thule-wingbar-e…) roof bars with feet to suit your car.

      • Be careful making blanket statements like that.

Thule have 5 different models of the same product with the difference being the bar length. 958200 might be fine for your car but not for someone else.

Also, these feet use a strap that wraps around the car roof rail, which is fine for raised rails but will not suit solid rails that many cars have.

        • Good point. Next time I'll make sure I run anything like that past my legal team first before releasing it.

  • Honest question here, but why would you buy these over the prorack or Yakima ones?
They are the original quiet roof racks with the aeroplane wing design..

    • Prorack / yakima are good choices, if I found a good deal I would have bought. Thule I can lock with a "unique" key and in this instance is cheaper than the prorack. I also prefer the way it looks and it will be permanently mounted on the vehicle.

Was actually looking for subaru OEM bars on gumtree but people want $200+ , and I gotta drive 45+ mins to get them. There was at my time of checking no used Thule 958200 on the market in my state - should make for an easy resale if needed.

  • I've got Prorack and I like the chanel/slot they have.
I slide a rectangular bar into it and it makes loading a sea kayak pretty easy.

    • Yeah, the channel/slot in prorack is much better.
You have to permanently cut the rubber strips in the thule.

  • The equivalent Prorack version (S Wing Rail bar) is $399 at Supercheap Auto. They have 20% off directly or through ebay so often it would be cheaper to get it from there unless you needed it immediately. Both are lockable and i think
    http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Prorack-S-Wing-Rail…

  • Do you still need to buy the fitting kit for these roof racks? If so its another 40 or so Euro, making it not that huge a difference to buying from here

    • They're "Universal" - see PlasticSpaceman's comment above

    • Nope.

  • I bought a used Suzuki Jimny that I'd like to put roof racks on, however it didn't come with the roof rails. Can I still attach these roof racks or the prorack without buying another set of roof rails?

    • Each manufacturer has their own variation of this:

      https://www.thule.com.au/fit-my-car/

    • Probably not. These are the ones for the rails. Just go on each manufacturer website and plug in your car details and see what models you nedd

For those interested in these, some Wingbars (not the exact same model number, so probably different length) are still on the Thule Australia Clearance Sale listing at https://www.thule.com.au/products/monthly-special/promotion/ (open the PDF) for $294. Hope this helps.

    • in the pdf,
"Clearance items include ex-demo, superseded items, factory seconds or ex-reworkand, in most cases, are NOT new. All products are sold as is.
