Random Chinese Robocall Phone Call

So recently I started getting calls from 02 8595 xxxx and private numbers and as soon as I answer a recording message starts to play a Chinese lady talking (am not Chinese so no idea what she is saying).

I suspect my number has been sold by one of the Chinese shopping sites that I buy from to Chinese spammers/hackers.

I've blocked all the numbers that called but the calls keep coming from other numbers (two calls a week). This is starting to get on my nerves now.

Anyone experience something similar of this sort?

I see.. should've googled it first.

  • Yep, this is fairly common. Along with the text messages for discounts and offers on shops and casinos and stuff you’ve never heard about. Gumtree is one of the worst places where your number is farmed and sold on.

You can try this but doubt will affect these calls: https://www.donotcall.gov.au/

  • Possibly similar to this? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/379658

  • I get about one a week. I presume it's a scare scam saying they will dob you in to immigration authorities unless you pay, but I don't speak the language.

    • Just reported by the ABC, exactly that ^^

      • Mum gets the call, around x6 everyday.
        Somewhere between 10 - 30 times a week.

        It's always "Blocked Number".

  • I get one or two random calls a week, telemarketer or otherwise (I google the numbers) I never answer unknown or private numbers. If it's important I figure they will leave a msg.

and they say "chinese Embassy" in english about half way through it?

my mrs is chinese and says it's an old scam

  • It's been making the rounds, i ignore all unsolicited calls.

  • https://www.thenumberingsystem.com.au/#/number-register/sear… lets you search for the VoIP provider. I've noticed www.symbionetworks.com seem to be the VoIP provider for most scam calls. I've reported some numbers to Symbio, but they told me that they won't be taking any action. Symbio are obviously making money from the scammers using their service and don't seem to want to stop the scammers.

  • i've been getting some 02895xxxx calls in the last couple of days. i've never really had a problem before. i've never answered them. i don't know anyone in canberra so i doubt i ever will.

it really undermines the credibility of caller id when spammers can spoof phone numbers.

Looks like a Sydney number because here in Canberra we have 02 6 and 02 5.

  • I just respond in a racist Chinese accent

  • Mine tells me that I have a DHL package awaiting pick up.

  • We screen all our calls using an answering machine. We get a lot of beep beeps during the day because they usually hang up when they realise they have an answering machine. Our friends know to sing out and hold onto the line so we can answer it. Most of our real calls go to our mobile phones nowdays. Most of our calls out are with our mobiles as I have unlimited calls and messages.

    • Answering machine had one of these messages left today.

  • Not good.

OK, I just got another one of these calls.

If you press 2 during the call you get put through to an actual person to abuse.

    • Would be particularly great if you spoke chinese. Does anyone have any good phrases to use so we can make the best impact. Either that or just getting an airhorn of a vuvuzela might be worthwhile.

      • Here's a hilarious start:

        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandarin_Chinese_profanity

F*** your ancestors to the eighteenth generation made me LOL

hún dàn (混蛋) = individual who has at least two biological fathers and one biological mother, the idea being that the mother mated with two or more males in quick succession and a mosaic embryo was formed.

        • Now we just need to find a site that has them as spoken rather than written then we could just setup the computer and press play when the time comes.

        • "F*** your ancestors to the eighteenth generation" damn, that is funny!

  • I got one of these calls today as well. I was on another call at the time so it went through to the mobile voice mail. I couldn't tell what the language was but it definitely sounded like a robot caller.

If it came from a shopping site I'll have to think about which new shopping websites I've used recently.

  • Merged from Can someone explain this !

    hi everyone

    i got a call from this # today :03 7436 0903

and a automated voice said some shit in mandarin/cantonese & hung up.

When i called back its disconnected.

Does anybody know how that could happen & whats goin on ?

    • its a scam.. ignore it

Sounds like you're being targeted by the triads.

For a fee of $5000/month, we'll send bikies to look after you.

    • but how can a called ID come from a disconnected #?

    • its the start of our new overlords basically telling you to surrender to their ideals or die if you try to resist.

    • +1

I'm intrigued - why did you call back?

      • just inquisitive. I'd never had a call come thru like that before & its good to know what scams are out there.

    • +3

Do not ever call back. It could be a premium rate number.

It's an immigration scam targeting visa holders especially students accusing them of working too much in breach of visa conditions (which they may be as it's so expensive to live here on a low income they need to work as many hours as possible just to make ends meet) etc…. send us money and we'll overlook your transgression. blah blah blah.

  • The caller ID is spoofed, it can appear as either a landline or mobile phone. If you pick up the phone, you'll hear the chinese voice is basically saying you have important message from DHL or Chinese Embassy / consulate with some urgency, please press nine)

If you dial 9, you are transferred to an actual human being who will try to scam you.
