Who Was in The Wrong during This Driver Stand-off Caught on Narrow Melbourne Street?

The entire event was caught on camera. Initially, I even tried to back up a bit so he can move his car to his left where there was ample of space but he wouldn't budge. I indicated to him to see if he can move to his left by hand movement but still, he wouldn't move. I was eventually forced to back up even more by another car. If it helps, in the last few seconds of the clips the gentleman in the red car pointed his hand and told me it was the other car's fault. What would you have done?

It was really weird. I guess as you are the only one going to one direction and the other side have 4 cars you may be the one who need to give way. Perhaps I was wrong.

Both drivers need an attitude adjustment, as does the ute driver.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

Our roads are no different, a little bit of courtesy is needed. Everyone has their own perspective subject to cognitive biases. Failure to appreciate this is ignorant, arrogant and/or lacking compassion. Each drivers' stubbornness ultimately caused them more inconvenience than if they had yielded. The innocent victims here are the occupants waiting behind.

      • Both drivers need an attitude adjustment, as does the ute driver.

Why can I only give this one upvote… so much entitlement in one video, it was cringe worthy.

  • +3

You could have moved to the left when you entered the narrow street…. but the oncoming car could have pulled over when they saw you approaching also.
    No winner, no loser…

If you travel this road often then you be aware and be ready to pull over.

Big ute was a bully but both drivers were incompetent to begin with. Why would you just sit there and block the entire street off?

Next time, indicate and move over when you see a car approaching, I usually do a quick high beam or light-dimming to let them know to go first, makes the whole process smooth and quick. Everyone goes about their day merrily.

The driver of the aon052 behaved like a tool. They drove on the footpath, cut in without indicating and pushed their way forward.

  • You should have been courteous to begin with however the other guy is clearly a (profanity) and by the end of the video I was a little bit disappointed you stood down. But it was the right thing to do in the end.

You should have pulled up behind the hatch, allowing them to pass you.
It is common courtesy, you should allow people to exit before entering. This applies to trams, trains, busses, elevators, any kind of door, etc.

Although there was plenty of space there for everyone, the other driver should have pulled up to their left a little bit and you both could have passed one another without issue.

    • +3

Agree. In narrow streets, the driver who has just entering the street should give way. I can't blame the ute for being a bully though - nothing was happening. Was the plan just to sit and stare at each other until a tow truck is summoned?

      • I can't blame the ute for being a bully though - nothing was happening.

The driver drove on the footpath, cut in without indicating and pushed their way forward. Many motorists would definitely have a problem with that type of driving behaviour.

        • Look, I know if you take out emotions, the Ute did not do the right thing.

But seriously, OP and the other car seemed like they were just going to sit their forever. Someone needed to take control.

  • +6

You should established dominance by doing a skid.

  • +5

You had to cross onto the wrong side of the road to avoid the parked cars - so technically you were obliged to wait…
    BUT
the car coming the other way could have pulled over to its left and allowed both cars to pass - so it was a bit of a dick move.

    • +3

The way I see it, OP entered the street and could see the street was narrowed down with parked cars. OP could also see that there was also other cars already using the narrow street. There is a clear area upon entering the street that OP could have pulled over and waited for them to pass. Other cars have right of way due to already being on the street as OP was not. It was totally a dick move.

But what the ute driver did, driving on the footpath, that just adds a whole new level of stupid to this equation.

  • +6

If that was in Perth….. the car already in the street would have right of way… the car entering [with the dash cam] would have to get out of the way.

    • +7

its the same way in Melbourne. OP was clearly in the wrong.

      • +2

It’s in the Australian Road Rule. It’s not a state legislation issue, it’s a federal one.

125 Unreasonably obstructing drivers or pedestrians
        (1) A driver must not unreasonably obstruct the path of another driver or a pedestrian.
        Maximum penalty: 20 penalty units.

OP had ample vision and opportunity to allow the cars already on the road to pass. It their sense of entitlement didn’t allow that to happen…

  • +11

OP - As you had to 'go around' the parked cars on your left, you had been in the wrong by not giving way, and allowing space for the already oncoming car to exit.

You should have come around, realised there is only room for one car at a time, and seen oncoming cars. So waited behind the parked cars for them to clear and then move forward.

I indicated to him to see if he can move to his left by hand movement but still, he wouldn't move

Well he did have right of way ;)

  • +10

The dash cam owner is clearly in the wrong, he made the turn and could see :

    a) It was narrow.
    b) There is already a car coming.

Why didn't you just stop by the side until the cars came past?

    • It also looked like OP sped up when it was obvious there was an oncoming car…

    • +3

The driver using the horn was a bully.

    • +3

      People’s stupidity amazes me.

But agree with whooah. Dash cam driver was a moron for using his horn like that in a residential area.

  • +2

Pride is the guilty one here.

  • +2

The owner of the dash cam is in the wrong.
If you're moving out of your lane to avoid park cars you need to give way to oncoming traffic in the other lane.

Yes - the other driver could have moved left to be courteous but is not required to do so.

    • +1

Yes the parked cars is where the left hand lane is.

  • +6

OP is clearly in the wrong, and if I am not mistaken the video (at approx. 00:38-00:40secs) shows him entering the street, the other car is already in the traffic, and OP speeds up towards the approaching car.
The whole thing could have been easily avoided with a little manners.
Not sure how many cars were behind OP, but there were plenty behind the other car that were inconvenienced, as well as what appears to be at least one other that decided to turn around before the road was cleared.

But, the guy in the ute is just a @@@%@^. It's a shame the situation developed to the stage where he displayed this.

  • +2

Wow, you saw the headlights coming and did the impolite thing and tried to rush it….if you had just slowed down when seeing thr headlights coming at you none of this including this post would have happened…

  • +3

Well at first glance it would appear that despite the oncoming headlights in the street you turned into, you continued to barge in head first regardless.

Regardless, what ever happened to using common sense? If you can't sort this type of thing out without others getting involved, perhaps take the tram?

  • +1

why is there parking on both sides of that tiny street? that's bullshit

in a non (profanity) world, the other guy had plenty of space to move to his left. regardless of who should have given way in the first place, once you were in that situation, it was the easiest way to resolve it.

not sure on the laws in vic, but i'm pretty sure the bloke who drove down the footpath would have been breaking the law doing that here

  • I accidentally clicked that you were in the wrong, my vote is really for the other guy
Can’t we all just get along? He could have easily been further to his left. He’s in the middle of the road with no car immediately blocking his lane (sure there are some he is about to meet)
    Selfish driving

  • +2

OP, you are on the wrong side of the road. Did you just expect to barge past? How selfish can you be?

  • +1 for the ute driver he saw a situation and resolved it.Neg vote for OP for not allowing the other car to pull away from the kerb when the road was clear.

  • -1

Other driver has a large, clear space beside him & refused to go into it, while OP has a car blocking him from moving over.
100% behind you on this one - the other guy was in the wrong.

  • +3

Other drivers were already on the narrow part of the street. You had the opportunity to move over and let them past as you entered the street, but you jammed your car up the street even though they were already on it. You were in the wrong.

You were initially to blame with your “I’m more important than you” actions. Problem is, the guy in the ute had the same attitude. Two wrongs don’t make a right. You basically jammed all those cars in the street because you felt more self-important. The guy in the Ute just fed you some humble pie.

Road Rules, Part 11, Div. 1, Rule 125.

125: Unreasonably obstructing drivers or pedestrians
    (1) A driver must not unreasonably obstruct the path of another driver or a pedestrian.
    Maximum penalty: 20 penalty units.

  • +1

As far as I can see there are at least two cars coming toward the OP. Should have let them go first. Once OP has pulled forward and blocked the road, there are now 2 cars that would need to back up and probably more coming.

    • Not saying OP is in the right, but the oncoming cars quite possibly could have fit around if they went along the gutter.
