is this game dependant on sound as you said about rhythm?
both sound and rhythm/beat. you move your characters on each beat, so best to play with sound. however you can use a character (the bard) who doesn't move to the sound and can move any time/anywhere. etc

Awesome game - if you like Binding of Isaac, or Enter the Gungeon, these are similar games - but this one uses the beat/rhythm as a timed movement.
great soundtrack, great game play, great re-play value.
