TP-Link HS100 Wireless Smart Plug - $29 + Delivery @ Centrecom

330

I was looking for these and came across this deal, I think its part of Click Frenzy. I already have HS110 and I love it, nice app and works with IFTTT and Google Home, only difference between HS100 and HS110 I think HS110 can monitor energy consumption.

I got it price matched with Officeworks over the phone.

  • Also just got the HS110 and love it - a product done well (not like the Efergy Ego crap I had previously), Google Home integration was a cinch. Will grab a few of these as only need the one HS110. Correct, these don't do the energy monitoring like the HS110.

    • Whats considered a good price on the HS110 model? Is it worth the extra$ ?

    • You don't use the monitoring?

  • Is it possible to click and collect ?

    • Yeah officeworks offered me Click and Collect but my local store didn't have it in stock so they offered free delivery

      • I'm in my local Officeworks at the moment and they've not got the HS100 in the system… Sounds like you got lucky and got the HS110 for $29!!

Edit: cleaned out my local store of their HS110's at $29.98 each

        Thanks OP!

        • How did you get the hs110 for $29.98?

        • +1

          @Ronney:

Showed them the Australian Geographic website… Done

        • @unrealshots: Oh ok. Thanks.

      • Just rang my local Officeworks about the price match & nope, they won't do it! They said that Centrecom is a "grey store"…but I smell bs!

Thanks, OP, purchased one from Centrecom nevertheless.

        • Should have gone the Australian Geographic option, they arent "grey"

  • Did office works price match the HS110 to the HS100 price from centrecom? they normally only match if its an identical product I thought, and I can only see the HS110 on their website.

    • Officeworks had the same HS100 for $59 so the price matched it since Centercom is local stock

Got one of these devices from Aust Geo last week for the same price., it's a pretty good plug and doesnt interfere with the on/off switch like the XIaomi's do. Great using it with Google Assistant integration.

    • shipping is free at AG too….

      • Says 7.95 for me?

      • ye free shipping over $70…plus 5.2% CR for those playing at home

      • ah - yes sorry - I had 3 in my cart

    • Unfortunately it does interfere with the neighbouring point in a double wall switch or normal powerboard. I was pretty disappointed to learn this when I got my HS100.

  • I bought one and had it in my room near my bed, I could hear a low hiss when the power was off - but not on.
    moved it to another room

Same price at Australian Geographic https://shop.australiangeographic.com.au/smart-wi-fi-plug.ht…

Edit, sorry didn't see comment above.

This is starting to become a much more reasonable price for this sort of device. It will be nice when they come down to the $20 price point.

There are major limitations with the HS110 when it comes to monitoring power consumption.

Both have the limitation that you can only configure/setup via the App.

    • I'm more interested in buying the HS110 for its monitoring of power consumption.

Can you explain the major limitations of this feature.

The problem is the lack of consumption data. Some other plugs that measure consumption can show details of what Watts and when. Some will even do graphs. The HS110 only tells you the following:
Today: Current Power & Total Consumption
Past 7 Days: Daily Average & Total Consumption
Past 30 Days: Daily Average & Total Consumption

        • Thanks, when you consume during the day would be handy but not a deal breaker for me.

    Dam!!!

    Australia Post: $8.63
    Star Track: $11.22
    Star Track Express: $17.26

    • Yeah, that stopped me dead too.

  • Google home integration? So… I can name the plug 'hallway plug' and then say 'hey google turn on hallway plug?'

    • +1

yes. yes you can. my home office one is called 'the plug'.

I just got two HS110s last week and quite happy with it. I used homebridge to integrate it into HomeKit and it works very well.

Anyone know a way to view historical usage on a graph like the Eve Energy plug? The TP-Link Kasa app unfortunately just gives current and accumulated stats, no history.

I might hack together something using homebridge to work with the Eve app, but a pre-made solution would be nice!

  • I can only see myself using it to turn our lamp on from sunset to 9:15pm and using the away mode for more random times. Is sunset to 9:15pm possible?

  • Free click & collect at stores with stock. Takes 2 business days to process. Bank transfer is free but PayPal and Credit Card attract a 1% (ie 29c) surcharge.

  • $29.98 at Australian Geographic for the past week or so as well. Free C&C or $7.95 delivery <- normal price for the 100 at AG, so not really a deal.

  • +1

Just price matched at OW over the phone against AG for 3x for $28.48 each. Thanks.

  • https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/183199804492 you can get these for $60 they replace the whole PowerPoint giving you two sockets, connects via zigabee, unfortunately no energy monitoring yet

    • Why would people want to use Zigbee when they can use WiFi? Means you need to buy a bridge device.

Not to mention with the one you have listed you need a sparky to come and fit it.

      • Zigbee is more reliable. Wifi is hit and miss alot

But looks better then a plug sticking out of powerpoint, especially hard to reach like behind units/couches etc

      • +2

Why would people want to use Zigbee when they can use WiFi?

My 30+ Xiaomi devices are zigbee. They connect to a single $30 gateway which connects to my wifi. That's only one device on my busy $200 router, vs 30+. I've already bought a second Xiaomi gateway for another $30, which is much cheaper and easier than getting an additional router to deal with wifi congestion.

My other IOT/smart devices (light bulbs, multiple amazon echo and google homes) are saturating my wifi router's maximum client slots.

        • "saturating my wifi router's maximum client slots"

Hmmm, sounds like you have many active WiFi clients or your WiFi access point is very limited.

I don't think there is a hard limit on the number of WiFi clients my access point (unifi ap ac lite) can have. My access point CPU reaches 50% capacity only when doing large file transfers at 200Mbps on the 5GHz band. Most of the time it is only using 15% of its capacity. Most IoT devices shouldn't use much bandwidth or even be talking on the network very often. Things like light bulbs, thermostats, etc would typically only talk once a minute.

I currently have 18 clients using the 2.4GHz band on my access point. 11 low bandwidth and intermittent talking. Three continuously streaming security cameras. Continuously streaming video on the 2.4GHz band can be a problem. Adding another two cameras to the 2.4GHz band could give my network problems. In terms of additional IoT of low bandwidth and intermittent talking type devices, I am sure I could add another 20 on the 2.4GHz band without troubling the access point.

        • @not a bargain:

Zigbee usally more energy efficient than Wi-fi

        • @oysbank:

Sure, but things like temperature and humidity sensors can last six months on batteries running WiFi on an ESP8266. Many other IoT have access to power.

        • @not a bargain: I'm already at almost 40 devices on my wifi. It's a solid Asus RT-AC68U, but I know that I can't keep adding clients forever. Every time that I've tried googling it, people say that 20 to 30 is probably the ceiling.

I'm considering adding another router and setting up another network just for IOT devices. I'm not sure if that's the best way forward.

        • @t3chshopper:

What sort of devices are they?

This is 40 on top of 30 zigbee? People say I have too many devices.

You wouldn't replace or add another router. It would be a WiFi access point, such as the one like mine. Although the price on the next model up has come down to almost the same price, so you would be better getting that. The AC68U is a good router, but a dedicated WiFi access point allows you to position it in the very best location. I find just moving mine 20mm can have a 3 fold change in the 5GHz throughput.

The number of devices a WiFi router like the AC68U can handle will depend on what they are doing and what else the router is doing.

Another major advantage of the Unifi devices like the one I have is they are entry level business grade, but use all the same control and management software. The software is a little more difficult to use, but has much better diagnostics to see what is going on with your whole WiFi network.

        • Hi T3,

What's the range of the zigbee in terms of using the xiomi devices ? I have a gateway and bought a couple of 'smart' plugs to test things out but haven't figured out how far away from the gateway you can go.

How does it work with multiple gateways ? do you have to create two separate zones or identities or..

        • @not a bargain: Yep. I have a bunch of LIFX bulbs, and everyone of those is a wifi client. I have a few RPis doing different things, multiple phones and tablets around the home, tvs, consoles, and then the wired clients like the PC, Media server, Shield TV, Xiaomi gateway x 2, etc.

I'm interesting in a Ubiquiti AP, and see people using them with an RPi regularly. I'd probably have been inclined to checkout another Asus router, using their AIMesh functionality. I've only heard good things about Ubiquiti gear though.

        • @jason andrade: I hear that it's 10 metres. My gateway is pretty central in my house so I haven't had to test the limits yet.

If you use a smart plug though, it acts as a extender on the mesh network. I'm yet to set up the second gateway, so can't comment yet.

  • Picked mine up today. It's very wide. If you have dual socket GPO you'll struggle to get access to the second socket. Is there such a thing as a very short extension cord?

Set up was very easy. My lamp will now switch on at sunset :)
