[Resolved] Someone Hit My Car, I Know Which Vehicle

So I went to my car today that I parked in the visitors spot and saw that someone had scratched the side of it. There was a piece of the other car that I know is from a grey Toyota Camry. I've seen the car several times near our apartment building so they either live here or visit very often. There was no note on my car so essentially they did a hit and run while trying to park or reverse out from the spot next to mine.

When I get a chance to look at the other car I will be able to see if the same piece is missing and lock down the suspect but they are not here at the moment.

I have no insurance yet & I just bought the car(used).

Has anyone dealt with something similar before and how should I proceed? Thanks!

Edit: Got a hold of the owner of the other car since they parked in a numbered spot. Had a scratch on the bumper and the piece missing that I found on the ground next to my vehicle. After inspecting both vehicles he apologized saying it was dark and he didn't know he had hit something. He agreed to pay for polishing and repairs should it be needed.

Thanks to everyone who replied!

Small scratch, just pay it yourself. RIP.

    Don't go asking for trouble.

Grey scratch can be due to the color coming off and showing the underlying metal. It might not be a grey car scratching.

    • Thanks for your input. I know which car it is since the piece that fell off is exactly the same piece as my other car and the colour matches too. I will not be looking for trouble, just want to ask them to cover the costs of repair. I know these things happen and they might not have even noticed hitting my car so I'm nor vindictive not will I go to the negotiations aggressively.

        Huh? Yeah no proof…..

        • -1

          Exactly. Circumstantial.

        • It's actually very good proof. It's known as 'perfect fit'.

You got not and nor wrong.

    Here we go again..

Can you explain why someone hitting my parked car is my fault? Regardless of the insurance, if someone damages your property shouldn't they do the right thing and correct their mistake?

        • -5

Your fault for not having insurance and/or impact-sensitive dashcams

        • +2

Seriously? You shouldn't be driving it until you have a cover note… They are bloody free, take 10 mins before you drove off…

        • +2

          @Slippery Fish:

Cover notes are no longer issued by Australian insurers

Yep a not my fault generation comment. How is it not your fault? Well you didn't have insurance, and now you're on a which hunt blaming someone without proof, just so its 'not your fault'.

Who the hell drives around without insurance!? A 'not my fault generation' person….Also know as the snowflake generation (look it up mods)

          @JimmyF: So many snowflakes here….

          @JimmyF:

You seem pretty disconnected from reality, time to step away from the keyboard

        • @cansydint: No not really, unlike some, I don't live in a 'bubble'. But sure, must me, cause why else would have they have named it Generation Snowflake……

      • -3

back in my day, when someone hit you, you pay for your own damage. parking damage was fair game. oh how i long for those days

    • +2

Yep another stream of TLDR'rs with messages of: suck it up an learn from it. How dare you not have fully comprehensive insurance with premium increases when you claim for damage caused by someone else who crashed into and damaged your car(That must have been parked badly) and was unaware or inconsiderate scum and broke the law/ethical/moral by leaving the scene with no notication to relevent authorities or leaving contact details at the site of the damage and how dare you ask questions on a discussion forum for discussing anything wasting our time by the fact we are forced to read the question and forced to answer and set you straight and question clear and conscise methods of evidence and information gathering and neg mate, neg. yeah. Oh, snowflakes.

And queue the occasional bored or dumb person like me that will expand the context too much.. blah blah..

TLDR: Snowflakes will melt with anger that someone used this their discussion forum.

Without a witness to the collision, you have Buckleys (unless they collapse under your intense questioning and confess to it)

You might as well ask that car driver. I mean, what have you got to lose? Apart from pissing them off and showing them which is your car, which invites more damage (if they have that mindset)

"I have no insurance yet & I just bought the car(used)"

Well you are lucky you have not been in a serious accident that was your fault otherwise you would really have something to worry about. Trouble looking for a place to happen.

  • +4

Have a look at accident threads on here and GET INSURANCE FFS!!

    • I'm not planning on driving it in the near future, it's a project car. Once I get it perfect, it will have insurance.

      • +4

You weren't planning on other people doing hit and runs on it either…

      • Cover note… Cover note… cover note…

        • +2

          No longer exists x3

      • Imagine some teen light your future project ;)

  • +3

YOu can get insurance before you buy the car.

    CMON DUDE! No excuse

Someone Hit My Car, I Know Which Vehicle

    Ummm no you don't….

I have no insurance yet & I just bought the car(used).

Well thats just silly…. Lucky you didn't hit anyone!

    and how should I proceed?

you open your wallet and you pay to fix it.

You have ZERO PROOF of who did this, its your 'guessing' game to move the blame to someone else.

At the end of the day, you have no insurance, so you pay up. Even if you had insurance, again you have ZERO proof of who did it, so would be at fault.

    • +2

He has resolved it which makes all your comments foolish.

  • If its a project car you'll have to do the bodywork/paint regardless so is it worth the angst also if you live in these units what are you doing parking in a visitors spot ? That is taking up a visitors spot with a 2nd? car

  • +2

Don't get offside with a neighbour. They can make your life a lot worse than a scratch. Don't give someone who lives near you reason to have a vendetta against you. That's just not smart.

Plus maybe he will tell the strata you were parking in a visitors spot and you'll get in trouble with them

    • +1

      Roll over pussycat.
Could try reasoning with someone and not turn a blind eye to disrespectful anti-social scum who get away with their lifestyle choice because of this. Bad people get away with more if no one confronts them. "Be quiet and suffer" is not good advice.

  • Any CCTV in the unit block?

  • +1

    Forget it!
Unless you personally witnessed the accident or have an eye witness there is nothing you can do.
Even if you did its on private property so the police dont get involved.
Video footage doesnt help either as it wont show the accident occurring and i doubt you can get it released for personal reasons.
Just put it in the too hard basket and accept it as wear and tear

  • Maybe you can sue them.

    • -1

      sure… on what grounds?

  • can't prove it so you have nothing.

  • you plan to lock down a suspect. jesus christ what is wrong with you

  • "he apologized saying it was dark and he didn't know he had hit something"… really??? what a BS excuse

  • So the great (legal) minds on OzBargain got it wrong AGAIN.

    • -1

only as the other person was honest, 99% of people wouldn't admit fault. So without this, the OP doesn't have a leg to stand on.

      • I think what you mean is that YOU would not admit fault and you like to think that 98% of others would not.
Fortunately there are many more honest people than you seem to think.
[We just hope we are not run into by people like you].

  • Happy ending.
Nice to hear for a change

  • Lucky OP! Similar to the white Audi guy!
