Samsung 2TB External Hard Drive @ $99 is back!

1350

Hey guys:

Remember this great deal? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36904

Well, they just called me from Harvey Norman to tell me that they have the Samsung 2TB External Hard Drive at $99 in stock again!
This is the Fishwick store in Canberra, but I guess every other store should have gotten them.

I am going right now and I'll post after I get it :).

EDIT: Well, I just came back, and I got it for 99, but it was a back order. The price was now 189!!! But as I could read from some of the posts, some of you were able to buy it at 99 dollars. But at least in Fishwick you can't :(.

Sorry if this cause any trouble to anyone.

    Prob only for back order!?

  • +7

Cmon Gerry, is that all you can do

    • +7

Last time I checked 99 is still less than 100 :)
Also, show me a few 2TB that are under 100, have not seen many around.
      I am looking for one.

      • -2

I think beatlebob was talking about 2tb samsungs without an enclosure (I got one from istore recently).

      • +2

ARC, MSY, Pretty much any PC store will sell you a 3.5" NAKED $100 2TB drive. Then you get get yourself a 3.0USB or Sata dock.. or just hang it off your pc!

      • +1

not sure if it is a listing error or a scam due to the guy signing up to ebay today and having no feedback but check this out http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Samsung-G3-Station-2TB-2000GB-Externa… $25 delivered. I brought 2 and paid by paypal so if I never get it ill get my money back anyway so not fussed wether they come or not, but it would be nice!

        • pay with paypal.. if you don't get it use buyer protection & get your money back

        • Definite scam - a Zero Feedback user cannot normally open a store.

Item will be cancelled. Might as well put the claim in now.

        • yeah the paypal account the payment went to isnt registered, ahh well it was worth a try i guess….off to harvey norman I go!

        • and offers free international shipping! all for $25! LOL …. definitely a scam dude, Please people don't risk it even it is through PayPal.

        • There are very strict rules about when PayPal provide buyer protection, I think some of the requirements are that a seller maintains more than 98% satisfaction rating or something like that. I stopped using PP and eBay a couple of years ago after they screwed me out of some money so no idea what the rules are now. Better read up before paying this guy any money!

Those scams are used to gather email addresses, real names and matching ebay IDs.

Buying makes you the target of phishing emails. Ebay teach you that eBay and Paypal emails will address you by your full name… and guess what these scammers now have ;-/

          Watch out!

        • +7

These are not scams to gather IDs as suggested by some, but they are scams.

          What will happen:

If you buy, you'll get sent a piece of junk like a plastic ring or bangle from China.

You can't lodge an item not received as they will have proof of postage (remember payPal only wants proof of postage, they don't require you to prove what it was that was sent)

Then when you lodge an item not as described claim, you'll be told to send it back to China. You'll need to send it back Registered as otherwise the seller will say they never got it.

At this stage people will look at the requirements and cost to send Registered back to China and give up as it's all to try and recover $20.

Multiply that by however many people they've scammed and it will give you an idea of how much money they make.

        • Yes, that is one of the scams (a false item) - there's a guy doing that almost continuously selling rare coins.

But from what I've heard recently, the majority of these new IT-equipment scammers don't even have a working Paypal Address… the payment just sits there unclaimed.

    • this is priced at $115 at MSY, while the USB 3.0 is $149.

just went on msy's site and wtf?!

  • nice first post welcome to ozbargains, +1 for not making a big deal too :D

      ozbargains?

      • +3

        Fishwick?

        Anal?

        • +5

And anal was not meant as a pun, but Fyshwick is the best place in Canberra for it, I guess.

Just went and bought 2 more from HN confirmed still $99 til 16th Jan :)

    • 4tb is a lot of porn mate!

      • hahaha friend of mine wanted one also as he missed the last time and just bought another for myself cause I got my refund from the Centrecom fiasco today…. :)

        • -4

any one has prn with mkv format ? 19201080 ?? :D jav if possible

  • Do HN still have 1TB 2,5 Samsung $99 in stock as well?

I was looking for this one but some stores has run out :(

  • can anyone confirm if the internal drive can be taken out and used in another device like pc/pvr etc? some of these have weird non standard connectors inside, well some of the 2.5inch versions anyway

    • yeah… i m wondering about that myself… wanted to use it as a drive in NAS

    • Should have a standard SATA plug. It would most likely just be a standard Samsung 2TB SATA drive, 5400RPM, etc.

Just note that if you ever plan to RA it (failure, etc) - keep the case.. They won't let you RA just the drive.

      • Mine came with the Samsung EcoGreen F4 2TB HD204UI.

    • Why would you bother.. just go out and buy one of these http://www.arc.com.au/pub.php?gid=23419&pid=38327&p=product for $101 and save yourself the trouble.

    • it will void the warranty. if you just want a drive, buy a 2TB internal samsung hdd at a cheaper price ($96 msy/umart). if you don't want to void the warranty then you will have to put up with usb speeds

    • The older samsung 640gb 2.5" externals had a custom pcb with a direct USB connector… no sata connector when split open.

    • +1

Hi guys, YES you can def. open one of these and remove the drive to use in a NAS. Have done this myself and now have 4 x 2TB drives in my Netgear Readynas NVX.

And doing it this way rather than just buying bare drives, I've been able to use my older, smaller HDDs in the now empty Samsung cases. Which BTW are AMAZINGLY simple to open - 4 Torx screws on the outside and 3 Philips heads on the inside to get the drive out. Then 4 smaller Philips heads to remove the drive from its support. 15 minutes max to swap them over.

  • Sold out at Armadale, WA HN

    • The Osborne Park store claim they are going to be getting enough in to cover all of the back-orders and then some. We shall see.

  • Nice to see they actually called you when they got new stock. Thanks

  • thank you

    • Thank YOU

  • thank you

    • Thank YOU!

  • Great drive! Bought one the other day and transferred all my files to do a fresh format on all my internal drives.

Did notice however that the drive has a slight 10-15 delay when accessing files if left on for a while. Also the transfer speeds are a little slow as people have mentioned in the previous deal that the drives are the Samsung Spinpoint 5400rpm drives.

Otherwise, neat looking drive at a great price!

    • Thats the same with all my internal western digital "green" drives. Can get a bit annoying waiting an extra 10 seconds while the drive warms up but I guess it saves electricity.

    • It's not just green drives. A lot of the controllers are set to aggressively switch off the drives when not used. I have a 1TB internal Hitachi slave in my computer set (in Power Settings) to switch off after 1 hour of inactivity. It also takes 5-10 seconds to fully wake up.

    • +1

It's not necessarily a bad thing that external drives spin down if left running.

    • I actually love the fact that I can hibernate Win7 automatically or manually, and this drive goes to sleep (i.e, access light off)… and when I resume it spins up again.

The delay is a small factor given the gains in lower power usage and also that it isn't on 24/7.

  • Does anyone know if this can be used as PS3 backup? Thanks.

  • I'm still waiting in Adelaide for my backorder on the 2.5 1tb drive that sold out within half an hour.
They took my number on the 3rd but haven't heard from them yet.

  • Bugger, my external hdd enclosure died on the weekend and I had to go buy something new. I rang around a few harvey norman's in case they had any of these left from the last time it was posted, but in the end I went for something from MSY (forget the brand) for $129.

Could have saved $30 if the old one just lasted a few more days!

    • I was told they take backorders up until the 15th (or was it 16th).

  • any stock in the perth citywest HN store ?

  • i bought this on the previous sale time, until now still empty…. i was thinking to transfer all my files from my old 1TB external seagate, but then the speed would be so slow i dont think i can stand it.
imagine transfering 1TB files between 2 external HDD, the data will go through laptop/pc bit by bit…

    • I did that… 11 hours lol just left it on o/night

  • Very tempting… but how do you guys fill up 2TB??? I can't even use up my 320GB WD Passport…

    • blueray backups (.mkv) in full hd with dts….between 10 and 25gb depending, adds up over a while!

    • dude, i think it was mentioned above by the bloke who bought 2 of them.

    • do some digital video recording - you'll fill that drive up in no time

      • i thought brrip files (mkv) is only around 600MB-1GB >? alot in internet, res 1080*768 minimum.
        VERY GOOD quality. subtitle included.
HD RIP is 6GB and has better sound quality maybe but i stick with the smaller files

        • without doing illegal downloads you could still fill it easy.
dslr with HD video recording = hdd killer.

        • From Wiki:
BD Rips are available in DVD-Rip sized releases (commonly 700MB, 350MB, and 1.4GB) encoded in XviD as well as larger DVD5 or DVD9 (often 4.5gb or larger, depending on length and quality) sized releases encoded in x264

A BDrip is directly from the source disk where as a BRrip is re-encoded from a pre-release BDrip.

    • My 2TB NAS is almost full, it's got 200 game ISOs (well over 4GB each), which is about a TB by itself. Then there's movies, 3000 or so NDS ROMs, tens of thousands of MP3s. And my movies aren't full HD and music is only 320k MP3s, not Flac.

It's not hard to fill the HDD once you bump up the sampling rates to get better quality!

    • -1

I have over 8GB of data.

      I don't know what you're doing …

    • Converting home movies to digital. Then trying to work out what goes where in the timeline 'cos people didn't label the originals :P

  • What's does the knob thingy do? Is it to adjust hard drive spin speed in case you want to slow it down to save electricity?

  • what is back order and how do you get it?

    • Read the terms and conditions in their catalogue and it will explain it. If I said it was same thing as a "Raincheck" would you understand then?

  • ahh why did i have to read this! i went to HN in fyshwick on the weekend and asked about this said theyd get some this week and that i could get it on b/order so i could pick it up at $99 but i was like ill check at woden as its more convenient and i went there and the guy basically shunned me away saying but i don't know if we are getting yada yada. Then i forgot to call fyshwick about it.
