  • I wish I could afford this, seems like a good laptop.

  • +3

Does the figures above include import taxes?

    • -1

      Take a wild guess.

      • +2

I did … hence why the question was being asked. Im tipping a firm NO!

    • +4

      Seems a valid question

    • Below AUD $1000 no taxes, although that is due to change soon (1 July, I think, but not sure when)

      • How much taxes do you think one will pay for this one?

        • +1

You'll need to pay GST at 10%, so A$123.

There may also be duties and other charges, on which you'll also pay GST.

At this price, you might be better off buying a Dell XPS 13 for around $1500

      • +1

Typically gearbest declares the value as the wholesale value rather than retail, this is the value customs will see on the package - they won't know exactly what you paid for it unless investigated further.

Do as you please with that information.

  • Only 8GB of RAM seems like a bit of a bottleneck for an otherwise decent system.

    • +3

They have 16GB version as well, see the post content.

    • It's great to monitor your ram usage on your current PC. Quite often you will use less than you think.

    • No touchscreen. No WIN 10 Pro.

  • These laptops are fantastic. The MX150 isn't very powerful but it's enough to play a lot of AAA titles on low settings and older games like CS:GO will run at 80fps on high.

  • whens the matebook pro x going to be released?! i wanna know if its TB3 ports are 4x pci-e

    • That looks sweet, but surely more expensive than this.

  • +3

Tech tablets on YouTube has a really comprehensive review on this and covers quite a lot of details that most other reviewers miss.

    • Agreed. Excellent Youtube channel for comprehensive reviews of these types of chinese products

  • +4

once again from my recent experience:
    1. bought Lenovo IdeaPad 310 with i7-7500U from Renewd ("excellent" condition, like new) for $300 (dual channel DDR4 8GB RAM installed, NVidia 920MX)
    2. put in FHD IPS panel for $80
    3. put in $100 256 GB SSD

what do we have? $480. Add $89 for 1 year warranty.

    Just sayin'. Why pay more?

    • +2

      can u elaborate? where from?

      • +1

        Renewd dot com dot au

and no, I don't work there :) I bought 2 items from them, and experience is fantastic! 2 day delivery, and quality has been awesome so far.

    • +1

Does the $80 IPS panel include installation?

      • +1

I installed it myself. ordered on eBay, from UK (there's a good seller there who deals in screens, he can also help you choose the right one for your model, but I didn't use his help, did my own research, and by the way almost all 15" laptop screens have the same standard). replacing the screen on most mainstream laptops requires the following:
        1. a plastic card, like old credit card
        2. philips screwdriver
        3. 10 minutes

here's example of a guy doing it in under 3 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOeABWRVp1M

P.S. please don't take this as "any laptop screen can be easily replaced". Lenovo ThinkPads are not easy, almost complete disassembly is required in general. Also HP Envy, and any other laptop with TOUCH screens. I hate touch screens, so don't care much for that :)

        • Link to the screen supplier pls?
I'm in need of a new one for a Dell laptop.

        • @megawatt101: give me the model number, I will find one for you

        • Ah. Well… I tried replacing a screen once. Cracked the bezel or whatever. I wouldn't do it myself ever again. :(

        • @flaminglemon: well, I did about 10 so far, 100% success rate :) well, I am an engineer

    • would also like an elaboration on this… 80 bucks for the panel + installation? Which $100 256 SSD did you get?

      • +1

SanDisk ultra ii, and read above for the panel installation :)
any SSD makes a HUGE difference compared to a spinning drive, and as long as you're not buying the cheapest SSD, you're fine. this SanDisk, or WD Blue is my primary choice. Samsung EVO when they're on special.

    • So a second hand laptop that is bigger and heavier without Type-C USB that you have to replace the screen and HDD (?) yourself to bring it up to spec is cheaper. I for one am completely surprised!

Not sure your comparing apples to apples there. But certainly could be something to consider depending on what you were after I guess.

      • all I am saying is that if you are after the specs, they can be had for one third of the price, and if it's the portability you're after, go to same Renewd, and pick something for about $400-500, with local warranty and 2 day delivery. be the judge of that :)

      • in my case I am puzzled trying to understand what people are trying to achieve buying some overpriced chinese crap :) when they can have not so overpriced hardware right here in oz, backed by local folks and big brands, so spare parts are abundant..

        • Overpriced? For starters, an NVME M.2 SSD is almost 7x faster than the crap sata SSD you've got in yours. You're calling a brand new product overpriced because it costs more than a refurbished product.Yours is incredibly bulky, only has 5 hours of video playback, stock (the new screen would use more power due to a higher brightness) compared to over 8 hours for the Mi Notebook Pro. It's better than yours in every aspect but price. I don't know why people struggle to understand this so much, but just because you can't afford something, that doesn't make it overpriced.

        • @elementzer0: I can afford everything, I just can't justify it :) so why would I need an SSD that's 7 times faster than mine? what on earth will I be doing with that?

as for bulkiness, if you call 15 inch laptop featherlight, there's something wrong with your perception :) 2 kg (Xiaomi here) is not light, and mine is just 2.2!

for travel and "out and about" I have a 12" 2-in-1 (Surface-style) with m5 CPU, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD, that is only about 1 kg, and lasts all day, and a screen that is way better than this Xiaomi you have on the scales. Also I can lose the keyboard, and use it as a tablet, too. And I don't need a backpack to carry it around, it looks and feels like a cool folio :)

so for $1200 what am I buying here? a 15" laptop. with a power that I am going to need once a year, and a super-fast SSD so I can copy around err.. I don't know what? and an IPS screen.. well, it's almost like my Lenovo in every aspect, so why can't I save $700 and put that money into something else? :)

P.S. anyway, I hate these pointless arguments, I was like you once. I had a very expensive MacBook because MAN THIS IS THE BEST, but guess what, I sold it, and I used so many different hardware, and disassembled so many different units, and now I know how to cheat the industry. So your choice, your money, if you believe that THIS LAPTOP IS GONNA MAKE YOU HAPPY then go for it :) most people learn the hard way, and I did, too.

        • @kasaresj: You make no point at all, first you claim your computer has specs that meet the Xiaomi's, then when i point out it doesn't you say "well why would I need that". You say you can make a computer for much cheaper. That's pointless if you need two computers in order to fulfil one purpose.

        • @elementzer0: it's the other way around, you are trying to get 1 machine for 2 purposes, when you know it will excel in none) I am saying you can have 2 machines for those 2 purposes, without much loss in specs, and still be hundreds of dollars less out of pocket) there's no such thing as portable 15 inch laptop, there are portables, and there are 15 inch :)

        • @kasaresj: And excel in none? It does a better job excelling than your pos. Would you say that people who buy new cars are stupid because cars lose their value? You're calling this "overpriced crap" but it's better than yours, albeit more expensive. So that means that this computer that you go bragging about on all the threads regarding laptops is actually more crap than the Xiaomi that you're complaining about.

        • @elementzer0: you're just getting emotional about it :) there's no place for emotions in a business transaction. I handled recent macbooks and ultrabooks, and my laptop isn't less capable than any of them, so I doubt this noname unit here will be somehow magically different :)

        • @elementzer0: also, I am not bragging, I am encouraging others to do what I do: save money by stopping paying more for things that can be had for much less :) after all, isn't it what ozbargain is all about.

        • @kasaresj: ozbargain is about getting more or the same at a cheaper price. You're getting less for less. That's not a bargain, that's a normal "business transaction"

        • @elementzer0: it's about getting what you need for less :) and I know exactly what I need, and what I don't need. and I don't need to pay $500+ more for very questionable advance in technology. as a rule, what was considered "best of the best" last year, is the best you can get without paying extra for the wow-factor.

        • @elementzer0: I will tell you how this will go from here. next year I will buy this Xiaomi model from your neighbour, broken, for $200, fix it, and sell my Lenovo with profit. I will "brag" about it while you spit on me as you are buying some new laptop with i9-8760wtf for $1500 from China :D

  • This laptop was about $1180 AUD about 2 weeks ago. Regret not getting it but also wondering if it will drop below 1k again

  • Do I have to pay taxes for it ?

    • Yep since it's above $1000 AU.

      • Damn…

      • I have a question. How do you pay taxes for these things, and who do you pay the taxes to? Does it get held up at customs or something?

        • +1

I'm not entirely sure but I'd assume that a bill is attached from Customs when you receive the package.

  • How does this compare to a mac book?

    • +7

It has a little bit of trouble running MacOS.

  • That's a really good deal for the quality of hardware you are getting and the battery life Xiaomi is able to get out of this.
Apparently it also has really good Linux support as well which is something that matters to me and approx. 3 others.

    • I'm sure there are more like us. What's your distro of choice? I go straight to Xubuntu whenever I want to install Linux.

  • Is there like a way one can buy this in Australia? Like in a local shop or from an Australian com.au site?

  • +2

I have the i5 version laptop and it's great. The 8th gen intel processor really packs a punch. Combined with the MX150, it maxes out Dota 2 and is okay on PUBG with lowest settings. Good enough for playing while I'm out.

I got the laptop for a little well over 1k AUD. 1027 to be exact. It's also from Gearbest so I spoke to the rep here on OzBargain if they can work around the customs fee in the receipt. True enough after 4 working days, I've received the laptop. I really like how it looks, the form factor and the minimal branding that it has.

I'm able to edit 1080p videos on the go. Battery life is okay, lasts me through the day without thinking about it, though honestly I expected better due to LinusTechTips' review of the laptop.

The keyboard is nice compared to other cheap laptops. I have a mechanical keyboard for my desktop and with this laptop once you get a feel for it, it's not too bad.

If you guys have any other questions with this laptop, I'd be happy to answer.

There's also a newly released 13" Xiaomi Notebook Air with the same internals as this that I should've waited. But I really needed a decent laptop within the 1k AUD range for work. Hence, this. I'm waiting for an in-depth review of that first before I swap to that.

Some people are able to run this machine as a hackintosh running High Sierra smoothly with the caveats being not able to use the intel Wifi/BT module and MX150 graphics. With the former, you can simply use a dongle and with the latter, you can't run it in macOS.

    • Did it come with chinese OS?

      • Yes it did. But a simple download of the official windows installer from Microsoft to make a live USB. Once installed, it will already be activated.

  • Better deals to be had here at Dell imo. Local warranty, and no import fees. Their warranty is very good. Next business day. Beats dealing with China.

    Inspiron 15 5000 - $1,188.99
    Powered by 8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8550U Processor, Windows 10 Home, 8GB DDR4 2400MHz memory, 256GB SSD & Radeon 530.

    Inspiron 15 5000 - $1,318.99
    Powered by 8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8550U Processor, Windows 10 Home, 16GB DDR4 2400MHz memory, 256GB SSD + 2TB hard drive & Radeon 530.

    • Well the GPU is better than the one on Well, the Xiaomi has a better touch quality and looks way smoother imo, battery life beats it by far as well. But Off the warranty is an issue and the importing fees.

      • I would take double the RAM for a cheaper price after import tax is factored in, and a much better warranty. If you try to game on this, it's likely to throttle anyway.

I seem to recall something nasty that Xiaomi notebooks do to the screen when the battery gets below 50%, but I can't recall what it was. It was either the refresh rate or the brightness or something else that gets halved. At the time I considered it a dealbreaker.

It's a shame I missed out on that Dell Precision deal a few weeks back. It was incredible value. Under 1.3k for a 16GB/512GB HQ laptop.
