[NSW] Hakushu Single Malt Whiskey 700ml $84.79 @ Costco Auburn (Membership Required)

120

Just saw the last Hakushu on Dan Murphy's, Costco had it cheaper if you got a membership. Great whiskey that has newly arrived in Australia.

$84.90 at Dan Murphy, for those who don't live near a Costco, or don't have Costco membership.

    • good question, how good is it?

Not really good value for money as you can get Glenfiddich 12 Year Old Single Malt for $60 at Dans. Then again Japanese whisky has been overpriced since Yamazaki and Taketsuru won best whisky awards couple years back

In terms of Japanese whisky this has a citrus/herb taste and not as smooth compared to other Japanese no age statement (NAS). I prefer Nikka from the barrel, miyagikyo or Yoichi NAS variants.

  • Suntory Hakushu whiskey is ok (strong citrus taste if you like that) I tried some years ago in Japan and the price is decent enough at Costco thanks OP. Anyone know any decent local Australian whiskeys for about the same price I hear we also do a very good job with them so wouldn't mind trying some.

Hakushu just like all the other japanese whiskies are fine… the issue is with the aus pricing. for example back in my 2016 trip to japan you could easily get the 4 staples from the convenience stores - yamazaki, hakushu, yoichi , miyakgikyo(my more favourite) as well as other things liek taketsuru by nikka.

MY recent trip to hokkaido I was only just able to pickup a yamazaki, could not find yoichi or hakushu, but found chita and miyagikyo.

These are all no age statements too but they were typically $3500 yen or so. basically you'd pay $35-45 for a bottle. it's the aus pricing which is all out of whack , and I don't think once you add on the prices it is the best value for money. but if you liek the taste then sure.. why not. I certainly thought they were great for the price… in japan that is, and before the world got crazy and pushed up the prices and stripped the shelves over there.
