Fastest Gpu Card for a Lenovo M92p Sff i5-3470 8GB Ram

Thinking a GTX 1050ti low profile oc is the fastest but not sure which brand or one to get

Can give me any recommendations

Will be going into a Lenovo m92p sff with a i5-3470, DVDRW, 500gb HDD and 2x4gb RAM.

Need the fastest or best bang for buck gpu going to be playing as many games as it can possible and output 4k HDR YouTube and Netflix to a 4k HDR TV.

Open to external gpu ideas but not sure how far I can get with a i5-3470 and 8gb of ram.. anybody know how much ram I can fit in here? I will be purchasing another 2x4gb of ram for $40 from same seller

  • Merged from What's The Fastest Cpu in a SFF Pc That Has Been Advertised Here or Elsewhere?

About to jump on a i5-3470 8gb RAM 500gb hard drive Lenovo M92P for $150 no 3 prong power cable.. gonna add in a GTX 1050ti low profile gpu and attach it to a tv and small monitor for now.

The latest Intel 8th generation i3-8100 is about 21% faster than this cpu but what else would I be missing if I didn't go the i3-8100 way for a bit more.

    Ram is ram 2x4gb.

    Comes with a dvdrw lol

What say you Ozbargain computer nerds

    • The fastest here was the Core i7-4790.

Although realistically speaking its not THAT much faster than a Core i5-2400, and its not THAT much slower than a Core i7-7700k. When compared to the Red Team its about as fast as the Ryzen 1500X.
      But I would say its quite a bit slower than an Intel 5960X, 6900k, 7820X or a Ryzen 1700, 1800X, 2700X.

      • How does it compare to a i5-3470?

        • The i5-3470 is not overclockable. You could play with the BLK and "cheat" to boost the frequency a bit, but it won't be possible in the Lenovo M92p SFF that you have (OEM's lock many things from the BIOS).

On the whole, I always recommend the i5-2400 as the minimum performance to people. Sure the older Core2Quads are formidable, and the first-gen Core i's are there too. But I recommend the i5-2400 because it has an IPC uplift, and the lowest frequency I would go to (3.5GHz), proper 4 cores, many optimisations, all that with a lower sound/heat/power-draw.

Now, the i5-3470 is a smidge faster than the i5-2400 and basically equal to the i5-2500. But it would lose to a i5-2500k which can be overclocked really well. And the i5-2600k is another step further, adding Hyperthreading. Comparing it to the i7-4790, the i7 has 11% higher frequency, maybe a 5% increase in IPC, and it has Hyperthreading. So in day-to-day tasks, they would be equal. When it comes to an UNoptimised program, the i7 will be very slightly faster. When it comes to an Optimised Application, the i7 will have a noticeable advantage.

          Overall, it gets my recommendation.

(You would get better gaming performance with a i5-2400 and a GTX 1050 Ti-4GB, when compared to a i7-7700k and GTX 1050-2GB. The CPU doesn't matter too much, as long as its not a bottleneck. The GPU is where you really want to focus.)

          • @Kangal: i5 3470 can be overclocked to 4 bins over turbo
Turbo frequency is 3.6ghz so you can overclock it to 4 ghz with a good mobo

            I can comfirm this because I have a i7 3770 overclocked to 4.3ghz base and my i5 3470 to 4 ghz base

I mean you could always just move the components to a new case and get a 1060 3gb. Will be able to do anything you want it do unless it's 4k gaming, for testing purposes my dad's i7 3770 Desktop got to use my gtx 1060 6gb. It could run any game I through at it with 70+ FPS with custom settings.
If you can't move you components then a gtx 1050 TI will be good. Wait until a good cash back promotion for eBay and hopefully at the same time a 10/20% promotion. Best deals to be had!

I have a M92P with a 1050Ti, it's a proprietary power supply and I'm unsure about the mobo. You can get LGA1155 mobos but they aren't that cheap. Moving to a new case isn't straightforward. External GPU isn't really an option as there is no USB-C - it's really pointless on a desktop given the costs.

You're limited to 32GB ram, more than enough.

Its a great setup but if you want to go faster I'd go to a 5th gen Intel system so you get nvme and can keep the cheap DDR3. There's a few on eBay. Its probably the "cheap ex office gaming" sweet spot.

    • I mean I want to build a desktop but a i5-3470 and probably the cheapest motherboard, a 500 gb hard drive, 8gb ram, a psu and case and DVDRW sounds like a steal at $150 pick up (Gumtree)

Only thing he mentioned was it has no 3 prong power cable but I think I can pick one up for maybe, $20?

Then add a gtx 1050ti low profile gpu and maybe a network card for wireless a/b/g/n/ac and I'm done solid 1080p 60 fps for any game.

That's about under $600 total for a half decent pc gaming machine. If I tried to build your gtx 1060 6gb i7-3770 machine how much roughly would it cost both first hand and second hand with sales and no sales you reckon.. I'm just going what value here because some of the 1060 desktops I saw were like hovering around $1000 for the tower alone this is hovering around $550-600. A 1070 setup is about $1500-1700.

I am thinking of I can get 1080p 60 fps solid with a gtx 1050ti setup on all games I throw at it I'll be happy but the 1060 is nice… Don't think I'll go 1070 at this point 1060 is the sweet spot or is it?

  • Well.. if you are willing to look at external solutions to fit a bigger gpu, why not just get a tower? A used custom built tower with roughly those specs can usually be had for around 300-600. With a custom, you could throw whatever gpu you want to your hearts desire in there.

    e.g.

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bankstown/desktops/student-s…

After all, an external gpu box in itself is already 300-400 and the SFF about 150-200. Consider your options, because I don't think what you're thinking of doing is that great of an idea. But if you know that a 1050ti is all you will ever need for that build, then it is a great budget build.

Power supply in the sff may not be able to accommodate more than a 1050ti

    • +2

      "will not".

You can stuff in some SFF graphics cards for making 3D Models, but these perform worse in games.
The GTX 1050 Ti is the best there is currently.

I don't recommend external GPU solutions, not unless its a laptop with eGPU.
Either accept the performance of a 1050 Ti in SFF, or build your own PC that is a tower or slim-tower (eg SilverStone rvz02).

      • The SFF 1050ti build has always been a dream of mine and personally I like playing with and comparing with all kinds of computers.

I will be making full towers next but I wanted to experiment with something smaller first to see how they run.

This is all small experience for me to see how different components run in different situations and scenarios and form factors.

Right now experimenting with the complete bottom a Dell venue pro 11 with 4gb ram and a i5-4300U or Yahoo I forget. Barely does some modern games and no current ones.

I wanted to increment it up a bit to a GT 1030 but realized maybe I already know that story. This all comes down into when I eventually make a game sometime in the not so near but distant future and try to experiment with it on different platforms and pc ranges.. But maybe not a mac haha lol we shall see.

  • A GTX 1650 is pretty good. Not the 'Super' variant as it draws from the PCIe power connectors which you most likely don't have.

    • Would it be better than a Galax Geforce GTX 1050 Ti low profile you reckon in most games but mainly call of duty modern warfare 1080p?

      • Definitely. The 1050 Ti is pretty much obsolete for AAA gaming at 1080p Low. Used a regular 1050 last year and AC Odyssey was running smoothly at 720p Low 30fps.

        • Hmm well I guess if I can still the 1050 Ti low profile for a good price maybe I can upgrade to a 1650 unless there is a better gpu that can replace my current 75 watt fighter.

          • @AlienC: The 1050 Ti is fine for eSports and 1080p low on games pre-2019 but I wouldn't recommend upgrading it to a 1650 as that's more of a side grade. If the 1650 is overpriced definitely don't get it. I'd just wait out until RTX 3000 and maybe GTX 2600?
