Buy a cheap SSD and replace the 500gb drive with an SSD - simple process but the ACERs are a b1tch to get into. Once you put an SSD into it, it will be great.

Youtube is good to get info on how to open - just be careful of the wifi. Acer low ends aren't great wifi. I replaced the card and aerial inside but ended up using Wifi extender with ethernet plug.

    • Once you put an SSD into it, it will be great.

EVERY computer (with limited RAM) is better with SSDs.

        FTFY

Yep, thanks Captain Obvious - I was referring to the process required for Acers is not a simple one.

I've done over 20 ssd upgrades for Macs and PCs and they are the best advancement in computers in last 5 years.

    • Not all Acers are hard to acces the HHD or RAM bay/slot. Have done a few Acers now and had one medium hard and the famous OzBargain deal from few years ago that was easy as. On the other hand had Asus laptops that were also easy and hard.

This one hopefully will be just a matter of removing bottom bays to access ram and hhd from memory ( looked at one few months ago ).

    1920*1080 - $336! + vote from me!

Probably all the laptop most OzBargainers would ever really need, although many wouldn't admit it.
    Great price.

Like that Acer celery from JB years ago with the cashback. Stuck two SSDs in it and still runs pretty damn good today.

    • *unless you are a Centrelink DJ

  • enough for lightroom or photos post productions?

    • was enough

but not sure after the spectre/meltdown fix … prolly -30% performance hit

        • low end cpu takes the most hit

        • @phunkydude:

          Link?

        • @syousef:

i read it somewhere before but couldn't be bothered to find the link again

          just ignore my comment

EDIT: i remember it says the performance hit is not linear % because of fixed overhead , so makes sense because lower end cpu lower performance but takes the same chunk of hit from the fix hence ended up bigger -%

    • I do the occasional photo edits, apply filters etc with Photoshop CS5 on and old Celeron laptop that i upgrade to 4 gigs of ram. Photoshop takes about 10 seconds to open but there are no delays at all when editing etc.

    • If photos are raw I don't think so. I think it will be glitchy and hang. I bought a low end windows 10 system for my auntie, put in an ssd; the processor struggled with everything. It had 8gb ram and I got rid of most of the bloatware and unnecessary services. I've done this with previous operating systems and things have run pretty fast, but not with windows 10. You might be lucky and it might just be slow.

    • Simply, no. These are Atom CPU cores.

    celeron 3450 …….

buy a use dell desktop with i5 or i7 off ebay that companies have dumped as part of their IT refresh. see see lots of cheap 250gb and 500gb SSDs and put that in as an upgrade.

i’ve used a celeron in a mini pc ….. never again….actually too embarrassed to sell seance one on ebay incase i get bad feedback and buyer wants refund, i sold one previously ( had 2 one for TV box and one spare) and buyer kept on hassling me for tech support and how it might run quicker or he wanted to send back for refund and leave negative feedback.
throw windows 10 on top with 4gb of ram ………
your kids probably get office365 as part of their school computing suite, which they can download to home computers ( my son did onto a gen 2 i5 with ssd and 8gb ram).

this machine is ok for people in old folks homes who just need a browser to check funeral plans and skype to hassle their kids who never visit … pay the careers to cut off wireless so your folks don’t spend your inheritance on funeral plans and stop skyping you with new accounts as you blocked their old ones.

      lol … laptop vs desktop

      • Yeah but those Dells are small and light

So sad Chrome OS hasn’t been widely adopted in Australia.

This laptop with Chrome OS would fly.

    • It's a bit of a shame most applications I use are either Windows or Mac install..

      • That's always the case. I love linux and getting away from control freaks microsoft, mac, android. But, I'm into photography, so I have to have windows to run the software. It's been like that forever. I get to play with linux when I retire computers and repurpose them for friends who have simple needs - and they fly.

    • chrome OS is boring.

Just open one chrome app and nothing else on your desktop or laptop.
Now you got the same thing as chrome OS

  • This thing is slow.

People confuse load times with computing speed. They're quite different. You can improve your load times and data access times. This thing will still have a slow processor. Got the wife and kids a 8GB model with 1TB drive and optical drive a year or so ago. I can barely stand using it even after things load.

    • "People confuse load times with computing speed. They're quite different. You can improve your load times and data access times."

"Got the wife and kids a 8GB model with 1TB drive …. "

      So, you got a 1TB SSD ?

      • +1

No I haven't bothered with the SSD upgrade. That won't help the computer run tasks quicker when you're not even using the 8GB RAM and everything's already been loaded in memory. The processor still matters. SSDs aren't magic.

        • what are you using it for ? browsing ? movies? office ?

even if you have 10000gb ram , your pagefile still stores on HDD

my shitty ancient celery 847 ULV 1ghz 2 cores , runs smooth on windows 10 for browsing, movies, word/excel, with 4gb ram

        • +1

          @phunkydude:

I avoid using it. Even the NUC is better.

My son uses it for gaming believe it or not. Rocket league lags at the start of every level but he's 9 and doesn't mind too much. I think it's loading textures and I'm in shock the inbuilt graphics can handle the game at all.

I should spend some time removing bloatware and trying to optimize it.

My point is people buy a Celeron and expect it to behave like an i7. That's not going to happen just because you stick an SSD on it.

And if 1TB SSDs were available at reasonable cost I think I'd make the switch and see how I felt about it then. But I do know what to expect.

        • Your wrong… a SSD is the biggest gain in performance overall.. especially in a laptop where traditionally the HDD are slower RPM for longevity.. how often is your CPU maxed out at 100%.. how often is it reading or writing to disk… yes it depends somewhat on what you are doing but everything has to be loaded into memory from disk in the first place.. and unlike upgrading a CPU it is normally quite an easy DIY upgrade.

        • @sarakoth:

It might be easier, but beyond load times you would definitely see better improvement in speed going to a faster CPU. i5 would kick the pants off N3450 for everything you do.

        • +1

@syousef: ofc i5 would kick the ass, but at what cost? less than $400 for a FHD lappy is a godsend.

        • +1

          @daiwai:

500GB SSD will cost you at least $165

Can't argue against the price of this laptop. Price is great. It's just that you're then dealing with a compromised system even if you add an SSD.

Much better off to upgrade less often and buy a decent system that doesn't drive you mad to use.

        • +1

          @syousef:

          I agree.

Unless you need a portable computer/laptop with just OK performance for basic tasks, but reasonable battery life on a budget.

On the other hand, if you have an ok laptop that still works well but want to upgrade some time this year, might be better off saving extra and spending the extra on at least a Pentium or i3, even if it does not have FHD screen ( We All Want a FHD screen or better, but how many people would Need that more than raw processing power really??? ).

        • @phunkydude:

"even if you have 10000gb ram , your pagefile still stores on HDD"

If there was 10000gb of ram, why would a pagefile be needed?

        • I reckon the cpu will be maxed out unless you put a version of linux that isn't resource hungry - then it will fly. Re the pagefile: with xp and 2gb ram I never ran used a page file and never had an issue. I used to edit photos on it (tiff and raw). I researched this again for windows 10; in theory with enough memory you don't need page file, but now some software is designed to use page file regardless of memory amount. I have experienced this. I currently have 16gb ram and a small token page file just in case.

    • Is it good enough for my mum to surf the net with (without her feeling like i bought her a cheap piece of junk?..keeping in mind she hasn't used a computer in 20 years lol) with 10% off ebay tomorrow comes down to $300 if they dont increase the price.

  • Hi I need something to put all my digital music on to play through my sound system. I currently use a google chromecast audio and wifi but was thinking a wired option would be better as most my music are flac files or similar. Would this be ok or can someone suggest another configuration which would be better /cheaper? Sorry I'm not very tech savvy!

    • +1

yes this is ok but huge/heavy

you can get a mini music player that supports flac , or android mobile

      • Hi thanks for your reply, can you suggest a mini music player?
I also should have added my amp only has rca inputs so what I can gather for best sound quality I require a DAC to convert the digital signal into analogue between the player and amp.

      • +1

Depends if you want to select the music on a PC style screen. I tend to run my kids' birthday parties off of a laptop not a phone because it's easier to manage a playlist with keyboard, mouse and decent sized screen.

That said there is no guarantee that the sound on this laptop is good. And that goes double for a cheapie Android phone.

Did some searching and found identical model number as this listing on Amazon.au with same spec list except they have this screen as regular 1366 x 768, and they have the cpu as Intel Celeron N3450 and lower down as Intel Core i5 lol.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Acer-A315-31-C6MJ-Laptop/dp/B077LY…

When I saw a display model in store some months ago in the GG, it even had a sticker on it advertising FHD and matte too. So not sure about the Amazon listing, maybe a mix up.

Will be a good buy tomorrow via their ebay store with extra 10% off for $302.40 C&C.

  • Raspberry Pi has higher clock rate than this, lol

    Pretty disappointed with computer

she compares the computer to her granny. I wonder if granny is happy about this

google and acer.com.au say that this model does not come with a FHD screen. The specs on the site are false.

    • +1

I've the suspicious for a budget laptop having a FHD screen too, but habib23q proved otherwise.
