Need Help with Name

Hi all! Just want to run a poll to help us decide a name for our baby. We have decided to use the name Eren. However, we not sure how will the majority of people pronounce the name or perceive the name whether is it a boy or a girl.

So, we thought if we could use the power of the Ozbargain forum to run a poll to see how you guys would perceive the name. If you could help us out by replying to the poll below, we would be very grateful!

Explanation of poll options are as below:
Pronounced Aaron and I think it's a Boy

  • Eren is a Turkish word meaning "Holy man". You would use the verb "Ermiş" to denote that someone has reached "saint hood".

Im guessing you aren't Turk. The English spelling of this name would aptly be "Erin" but this is used for girls.

Oh you are Chinese. I don't agree with the deduction that Chinese name = less job opportunities.

At the very least I would consider a middle name.

I wouldn't go with "Ee-ron" because 1. It sounds funny and 2. Its close to "Enron" the Energy company.

My vote is Erin and Aaron depending on the sex

  • Pronounced like Erin and it's a girl.

  • Bloody hipster parents!

  • How is it pronounced in Chinese? Is 'Eren' the pinyin transcription of the Chinese characters?

Not spelling it Erin (rhymes with heron, the bird) or Aaron (rhymes with Darren, or even air-en) may result in a lifetime of confusion and your kid having to s-p-e-l-l it everywhere.

Use an e-business-card with the pinyin, the Chinese characters and the IPA (phonetic alphabet) where pressing 'play' pronounces it for you!

But if you're going with an English name, just make it contemporary - e.g. a lot of Hong Kong people tend to adopt very old fashioned names, as with buckster teasing above. Or better still, let the kid pick their own western name from pop culture when they're about to start school at age 5.

  • Cause a media shitstorm
    Choose "Adolf"

  • Enron

  • -1

    Cue the puns (poor kid).

I have some Erens to do today.
    Eren away from school detention.
    Australian or Erenian?

Seriously choose another name. I’ve got an Old English name that I have to explain to people how to say. I’ve copped it but I’m just as sharp giving what I get.

  • Oh man with a name like that he/she gonna get make fun of. Should of chosen a name like Bart because there's no insult name you could come up with

  • +1

    AyAy RON

  • Baby McBabyface

  • Eneloop

  • Not many, if any, votes for JV. Go on, you know you wanna…

  • I like it :) - Would pronounce it as "Air-en"

  • Boy.

Before I even read your options I read it as 'er-en'

  • Seriously, give your child a decent name that is easy to pronounce and spell.

I remember once asking a lady what her daughter's name was, and she said it's "Mishon". A name she says she made up! WTH.

    • -1

      All names are made up.

  • It's not a great name
Pick a different one that's more obvious as a guy or girls name
    This one is just confusing
He or she will be teased

  • Based on that spelling I would expect a girl.
