Need Help with Name

Hi all! Just want to run a poll to help us decide a name for our baby. We have decided to use the name Eren. However, we not sure how will the majority of people pronounce the name or perceive the name whether is it a boy or a girl.

So, we thought if we could use the power of the Ozbargain forum to run a poll to see how you guys would perceive the name. If you could help us out by replying to the poll below, we would be very grateful!

Explanation of poll options are as below:
Pronounced Aaron and I think it's a Boy
Pronounced Aaron and I think it's a Girl
Pronounced (Ee)ron and I think it's a Boy
Pronounced (Ee)ron and I think it's a Girl

Edit 180428 1313: Thanks for all the response guys. Your responses are probably will probably reflect what the general person's first impression of the name. Keep them coming in! We will definitely factor in your views before finalizing it.

I'm all for unique names but alternative spelling just makes the parents and kid look like idiots. Why not go for similar name that doesn't have some sort of wacky spelling.

    • +4

We are trying to get it sound close to our native language. Being here in Australia, we definitely want a name which can fit in. At the same time, we kinda want to continue our heritage. Hence, we may be just over thinking trying to get it to work.

      • +1

That's cool, I'd just suggest to go for a name that is from your culture but is mostly spelt how it sounds. What is your background btw?

        • +5

We are Chinese. Having gone through job application with a Chinese sounding name, I think it is a bit of a disadvantage especially if it is hard to pronounced, the CV would probably get filtered out. Found that with a self appointed English name, it got much better. Which then leads to question why the legal documents doesn't have the same name? But yeah, trying to see if we can fit both sides in if possible.

        • @Haku: This happened to my mother, not an asian name, but sounds asian/foreign. She applied for many jobs, then as soon aa she changed back to who maiden name, she got a job straight away.

        • @Haku: What's the Chinese name you want it to sound like? Or just how is it said..? Maybe a better question to ask everyone is what is an anglo name that's similar to how the name you want is said.
I think it's nice when someone has their Chinese name, but then also an anglicised name that sounds similar (rather than a random anglo name like Sunshine or Tiger)

But back on the original post. I think it's pronounced the same as the female Erin (eh-rin), but the spelling makes me think it's on purpose to make it a boy's name somehow.

      • +5

Why not just call them Erin or Aaron then?

        • +1

Yeah, seems like that would be the case.

        • +6

@Haku: if you're Chinese why not go with Raymond or Clement or Nathaniel or Kevin?

        • +2

          This!

And just give a Chinese name as a middle name.

  • how about ricky bobby?

  • I reckon use Eran for boy, Erin for girl.

Gender is more obvious, pronounced similar to your Eren

    • Eran looks like a brand of electric treadmill (E-ran)

      • +1

        It's a strong Jewish name.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that)

I'm sure people without a tech background will read Eran with a short E.

  • Air-wren as similar to Erin Brockovic or maybe E-wren.
I don't see many people saying Aaron without explanation

  • +1

Judging by your username and then seeing Eren, I thought for sure it was taken from Eren Yeager…SASAGEYO!

  • +2

Attack on titan? I met a kid named Raiden. As in, raiden from mortal kombat. Poor kid

    • I met a kid named Raiden

Must be how bogans learn the alphabet. They're almost there:

      Aiden
      Baiden
      Caiden
      Daiden

      Raidan

Edit: so checking the link: https://thingsboganslike.com/a-bogue-by-any-other-name/ @ganymede posted, Xaiden & Zaiden are indeed a thing as is probably Aidyn-Zaidyn & Aydyn-Zaydyn by now.

      • +1

Yea I've met a baedan too

        • +1

Yea I've met a baedan too

          Christs sake.

Have a relative called (the now old-fashioned) Baiden. I've always called him Bogan much to the annoyance of the parents.

      • There is a certain irony in trying to give unique or unusual names to children….. yet they all sound like so many other names.

    • +1

Make me think of Metal Gear Solid 2

    • +2

Right!! As the uncle of a little girl called Kagura from Onepiece I am morally obligated to tell the OP that it is a tradgedy naming your children after cartoon characters. I also had a student called Yuria (from Fist of the North Star) who absolutely hated the reference.
This particular kind of cruelty just keeps on givin!!

      • My friend named his dog sambuca (ended up shortened to 'Booker/buca') … Then when he had a baby girl, he named her after a brand of Whisky … I have no idea what some people are thinking, when they name their children such odd and unusual names :/ .

  • +20

Baby: mum how did my name came about
    Mum: from ozbargain lol
    ?????

  • I so wish we could use memes on OzB! There's a particularly good Bunnings one I feel would suit the occasion.

(Eren sounded like a boys name to me when I read it but, saying it out loud it sounds like Erin, a girl!)

    • +1

Memes have never been banned here

  • +3

I feel sorry for the future pain you are planning for your child.

  • +1

    Just name him Mate

    Mateeeee

    • +1

      Do you mean maaaaaaaaaaate?

  • +1

its a shite name. Dont use it

  • rumpelstiltskin is coming back in fashion, grab it while its hot.

  • Sorry OP, what's the driver behind this? Why not sticking to conventional names that can't go wrong?

Every bogan that I know has some funny names for their kids.

  • +4

Why do so many parents inflict such stupid names on their children???
Do they think they are being funny??
Hope the children take revenge when parents are old and infirmed!

    • +2

lol so true.. just give the kid a normal name

  • +1

I can't find the option for 'bogan name - doesn't matter if it's a boy or girl'?

  • +4

If it's a girl use the name "Aeryn". Farscape was a decent scifi show.

  • I don't like the ( and ) being in the last two names, I've never seen that before and think they'll have a lot of trouble at school.

  • Go with what you like.

So many conservatives here suggesting you stick with every day run of the mill "popular" names. My Mrs sister has a less common name while the Mrs has a very common name. She wishes she didn't have such a boring common name.

Re gender, I always think Kim is a feminine name but sometimes males have the name too.

Just go with simplest "phonetic" spelling.

  • +1

what about ron98. You get more mileage

  • +1

I would suggest it unwise to name baby something where people would always be mispronouncing and spelling wrongly. It would be an undue hardship on the bub. Not major hardship, but a hardship, difficulty and inconvenience nonetheless. Is there some particular reason why you are wanting to name the baby Eren ?
Another way it could be perceived is like Irene, but Ee-reen . Then think of the nicknames or shortened version, it would likely be 'Ren' , but could be 'errr' .
It would be kinder to call the baby something where it wont always be mispronounced and in turn mispelled (as if they say it, nobody will know the spelling).
I vote, change of name to Ozbargainette (for girl) . Or Ozbargeous (for boy) .

  • +4

    Baby McBabyFace

  • I think you should just call him Kemal Mustafa…

  • EE-Ren

  • +1

It has probably been mentioned, but it's a Turkish Male name. I know a Turkish bloke called Eren. I pronounce it Erin. I thought it was strange at first (in that it sounds like a female name) , but again, tis Turkish name.

  • +1

How about a child's blanket I came across embroidered proudly by Grandma with baby's name of 'Ephan' (read EFF…IN) as in 'F…in'. Felt very sorry for that poor little baby boy.

    • +2

What are you Ephan on about?

      • You Ephan fool, he thinks the parents are Ephan idiots for giving the Ephan kid an Ephan stupid name like Ephan.

        Ephan 'ell.

  • So, when I read the post in my head I pronounced it as "Eh-ren" which was none of the options in the poll.

  • +1

    A-A-ron for sure

  • Aaron is okay if it's a boy. I think Broden sounds better but Aaron is decent.
None of the other options are reasonable imho.

But you and your partner need to decide this, don't outsource it.

You don't even need to decide until something like 3 weeks after the child is born (that's when the form is due)

  • If you need to do a poll about how people perceive the name you know your in trouble. It seems you have thoughts on how it's going to be said to. This will pretty much guarantee that he/she will go through this stuff forever.

  • +2

My first thought was, why do these stupid parents not know who to spell Erin properly?!

  • +1

My first reaction would be: That's a boy's name from Attack on Titan.

If it's a girl, Erin is the better name.

  • Erin

Poor kid having a girls name….. give yourselves an uppercut.

Also your poll doesnt reflect what the majority would say. lols.

  • +4

I think all your poll options are wrong. How on earth did you get "Aaron" from "Eren"?

  • Being a migrant with a name that most Australians cannot pronounce or understand, I would choose a name that doesn't create issues regarding pronunciation, or confusion of gender. Something that wouldn't raise questions and that doesn't have to be spelled when ordering a coffee at Starbucks.
If you agree and you are creating a poll that probably means that you should think more about the options.

I like my name, which is a normal and exclusively male common name in my country, and here in Oz I usually automatically spell after saying it (I sometimes lie when that's not relevant, as at the coffee shop, just because I don't want to spend any energy if that is not important), but if I am living in Australia and I had to choose a name for my children I'd rather prefer that my children do not have to spell or explain their names every single time they order a coffee, or receive a call, or when booking an appointment with a doctor or hairdresser. I just think this is unnecessary when we have a lot of names available that are nice and clear. You have the chance to avoid a problem before it is created, and you are choosing not to do it.

Some people defend the use of gender-neutral names to guarantee that the child will be able to choose his identity in the future (without having to change the name), and that is thoughtful.

I am not aware of any studies showing that "flexible" names might cause more or less bullying, but names are socially important and that's basically parenting decision rather than genetic determinism. You might have a lot of reasons behind a name's decision, but some people are selfish and make horrible choices around names (just a page I googled: https://thestir.cafemom.com/pregnancy/196854/14_baby_names_v… ). You are creating an individual for the world/society, not an avatar to make fun and play with.

Having said that, Aaron sounds like a boy to me, and I think that's a more common name for boys (based on the commentaries, some people disagree). Eren and Eeron are names that will create confusion; you will probably have to spell it and identify the gender, and don't complain when people write Aaron or something else instead. ;)

I haven't read all the references but here ( https://nypost.com/2017/05/12/your-babys-unique-name-might-r… ) they cite some studies linking "creative" names to social and professional consequences.

  • Have a friend with a son called Eeran. I say it like e-ran ryhiming with Kieran. Some accents say it and it sounds like Iran. Just think Elon Musk.

  • eron vs elon (musk)? both sounds like boy. "O" sounds like bOy

  • +1

I would agree strongly with others above to go for a conventional spelling. If you are an Asian person with a deviant name it looks more like you can’t spell than being yoo-neeq since most people won’t immediately associate you with bogans and utes. I had many friends with creative Chinese spellings - Jensen, Jenson, Jonson, Jonsen - what’s the point of making your kid explain it constantly? Also the gender ambiguity isn’t really that great as Eren immediately looks like a mis spelt Erin

  • I would pronounce as girls name Erin and think it's a girl. I met a guy who worked at a call centre and every time he.answered the phone they'd either ask if he had pronounced correctly or if he was transitioning. Don't do it. I'm all for 'special' names like blazimon or whatever but I would never curse my own children with them.

  • If I was Chinese I would give him/her two names. A bog standard English name which they can use at school, and a Chinese name which they may choose to use when they get older.

  • +1

There’s so much irony in trying to be distinct and unique but coming off as, well, a bit bogan.

  • Looking at the spelling I would have gone with "Eh-ren", but it seems you want the 'ron' at the end despite not including an 'o' in their name?

If that's the case then, the name to me would read very similar to how some people pronounce Aaron (as "eh-ron"), a boy's name.

  • Eren Jaeger ftw

  • +1

OP, just spell it properly FFS

  • +1

I wouldn't go for Eeron/Eren. He/she will spend forever having to confirm the spelling/pronunciation. Its a vague, non-name really.

  • Mohamed boy or girl would be great

  • Cut the stress out of making the decision and use a random name generator.

  • +2

Why all the common names…..name him Thanos or Ultron nobody will question his gender when he grows up.

  • I only think of Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan. I like the name, but saying it aloud, it doesn't sound as good in an Australian accent as it does in Japanese.

  • Have you considered D’Eron? Or maybe Rocket Moonboot. Or maybe Seven. Do what George never did.

  • Baby McBabyface

  • I think of Eren as in Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan just tell your child to explain it that way

  • I would pronounce it as Eh-ren and think it's a boy. The way it's spelt can work for a boy or girl. I think the name is nice and don't think the spelling is funky. I like that it's unique. It's also short and simple enough to spell too - you can spell it out once and people most likely won't forget.

If you have reddit, I recommend posting on the subreddit namenerds or baby bumps.
