Flight Tickets - 2 Days Make Such a Huge Difference

Just randomly looking at flight ticket prices, and its incredible how international flights out of Melb can vary so much within 2 days for full fare airlines. Departing on a Friday night or a Wednesday night, can result in as much as a 30% difference in fare (Wed night being cheaper).

Obviously everyone wants to go on Friday night after work, but surely the airlines are taking advantage of this demand?

I noticed hotels do the same around xmas/new years. It's weird. I can't work it out.

you'll be surprised, not all hotels do!

      • Show me a hotel whose rate for the 31/01/19 is the same as today's.

        • why is that date significant?

        • +4

          Did you mean 31/12?

"but surely the airlines are taking advantage of this demand?"
Well yes, they are a business, they are there to make profits. What a weird statement…

      Literally "Supply and Demand"!

  • +2

It comes down to demand. Because everyone wants to leave on Friday they can charge that price. Also there are peak and off peak times to travel to places too which adds to the price. e.g prices rise closer it gets to holidays e.g Xmas as everyone wants to travel at that time.

If you really want the cheapest then go when demand is least when it is offpeak travel to that area

but surely the airlines are taking advantage of this demand?

Anyone running a business who doesn't factor in demand is doing it wrong!

Its called supply and demand. Everyone wants to be on the Friday night flight, so it costs more than the DISCOUNTED Wednesday night flight.

I seriously think that we are being punked by a number of these posts. If not the OP needs a lesson on supply and demand.

2 days make such a huge difference? Even on the same day, there could be difference between a morning flight & a night flight.

Obviously everyone want to save 30%, but surely the passengers are taking advantage of this supply?

    …and don't call me Shirley.

  • are you for real op?

  • Not sure if OP is trolling.

  • -2

Just to clarify, not trolling just honestly amazed the difference is 30%. I can understand a slight difference, but $700 airfare becomes $1k? Really?

    • +1

Yes. That's supply and demand in action. Less demand for Wednesday flights but airlines still want flight for Wednesday. To entice people to fly on this day. They charge less.

Same for movie tickets. Movies still get shown on days of less demand. Tuesday I think it is. As a cinema owner would you rather show a movie to an empty cinema or would you rather have some movie goers watch a movie on a discounted rate?

No different to airlines. Would you rather fly an empty plane or one with paying customers albeit at a discounted airfare?

      • Can we stop referring to the Wednesday price as "discounting"?

They charge the real price on Wednesday and gouge on Friday.

        • Marketing speak calls it discounting. As a business its financial suicide to call it real/actual price for wednesdays and price gouge for fridays.

Not saying you or i cant call it that but its also not wrong to say otherwise. Depends how you look at it.

  • the airlines are taking advantage of this demand

So why aren't you taking advantage of the non-demand?

    • Because op wants to fly on a Friday night for $700.

      /S

  • So if you were running an airline, you'd charge the same price all year round?

    • why charge, just fly for free..

  • " but surely the airlines are taking advantage of this demand?"

um its a business, why the hell wouldn't they.

    thanks captain obvious

ever noticed why a brothel is cheaper on Tuesdays….. me neither, but just curious

  • OP, pick any week day and check virgin & jetstar Sydney to Melbourne prices just for the day.
    Justify the differences.

  • A few years ago, I was booking to fly SYD-LAX, intending to leave on a Thursday. The agent asked if I'd like to leave on the Friday and save several hundred dollars. The departure date wasn't critical to me so of course I took the Friday. The agent explained that it was Friday 13th and many passengers don't want to fly on that day!

    • I will gladly fly on friday the 13th too if it means hundreds of dollars in savings.
