Should I Purchase a New Unwanted Telstra Upgrade Mobile?

On ebay I'm considering purchasing a new unwanted Telstra upgrade Samsung s9+. The price is good, the phone is Aust stock, however, I am worried about warranty. Do these phones include warranty? The seller says there is no tax invoice, but the phone can be registered with Samsung for warranty. What are your thoughts on this? What are Telstra upgrade mobiles? Is it a risk to purchase. Thanks for your feedback.

  • I think I might have seen the same or similar one and was asking myself the same questions.

It's probably a tax thing. They'll claim the contract payments as a tax deduction and not claim the income from selling the second hand handset. This could effectively make the phone contract free of charge for them.

    At least that's my guess.

There's always a risk. Is it worth taking? That's up to you.

  • If you're concerned, I think you can check the proof of purchase via https://www.telstra-online.net/ePOW/.

I honestly don't know much about this, but maybe it has what you're looking for!

  • Thanks mysterytal, do you know why there's no receipt for these phones?

  • You can usually access Telstra epow warranty. If the seller can give you the imei you can loom it up here

Best to do it over the phone if claiming on warranty from experience.

  • Thanks for that Monday I'll check it out.

Sometimes these phones are on a lease kind of thing - the person signing up for the plan/phone doesn't get title to the phone.

It may be that the person you are buying the phone from does not own the phone, and therefore does not have the right to sell it. That might also explain the lack of a receipt.

    • This is an unlikely scenario. It's more likely they're just selling an unwanted phone.

There's no receipt on a contract, because there's no money changing hands.

  • That's a good point, never thought the phone might not be owned. The imei checks out as under warranty.

It seems legit as they've just sent me a copy of a Telstra letter that confirms the model and IMEI numbers and states "Please keep this letter as your proof of purchase for repair or warranty claims." Seems ok, what do you think?

    • No problems at all - go for it.

  • The problem might be though, if they don't make their plan payments, Telstra might decide to blacklist the phone.

    • That's not how it works. The phone becomes the property of the contractee the moment they sign the contract, and what they do with it is nothing to do with Telstra.

Telstra don't mind if the contractee sells the phone, because they have a legal contract that enforces full payment via monthly instalments over the life of the contract.

  • Speaking as somebody who has done this same thing a few times…..

I recently signed up to a new Telstra contract and got a brand new Galaxy S8. I already had the phone I wanted (Pixel XL) and had no intention of using the Samsung. As soon as I left the store, I listed it on Gumtree and eBay, and sold it a day later for $780. The sale of the phone reduced the cost of my contract by half, and now my effective cost is ~$27/month for 20GB data and unlimited calls/txt.

I told the Telstra rep of my intentions at the time of contract signature, and they had no problems with it. They were able to provide a paper copy of my "purchase" for warranty purposes and I gave that to the seller with the phone.

IMO there's no risk in making this purchase, provided that you can get a copy of the warranty paperwork.
