When a Special Is Not a Special

Received an email from Carbatec today and they have their tin of 170 Titanium coated drill bits on Sale down from $89 to $75.65. But then Bunning’s have them in a tin with 99 Titanium drill bits same size range @$19.90 1mm to 10mm Carbatec has 19 different sizes where the craftright set has 14. 5 less of the sizes Craftright does not have these mm sizes 1/7/7.5/8.5/9/9.5 but has 3.2 but this has not been a problem as there are Chines online sellers that sell all the individual sizes bagged in 5's or 10's.

Cost is .20 or .44 per bit or when not on special .52 per drill bit and for me it is a long drive to Carbatec or the added cost of freight.

One of the Few times Bunning’s actually gives a good price as I am not a big fan of Bunning’s they also shocked me a few weeks ago when I saw Ear Muffs with Bluetooth and FMRadio @$69 -In my mind I could see myself buying them for around $40 but online they were over $100 one ebay seller $149.

My attitude is from us being the most price gouged country in the world and retailers advertising Australian owned does not attract me, But if Australian Made that does attract me but it is getting that way if you find something is Australian made and even with food in the supermarket it is just about impossible to find any think 100% Australian it has you doing cartwheels around the store .

There is a Table Saw I like very much but not sold in WA but in the eastern states between $2200 and $2800 then the freight cost to WA is an extra $389 plus an extra $95 if you don’t have the equipment to lift the saw on pallet off the truck. But while googling the saw it took me to the manufactures website in China and I noticed minimum purchase was one Unit @ $1300us I sent for cost of extras I wanted and delivery cost.

China to Fremantle $20us & $50us insurance.

The whole thing is we have to be smarter shoppers and you have to learn to ask for their best price for Example when I bought my Triton router Carbatec was over $200 more than other retailers and I asked them why they felt justified charging such a high price as I wanted to buy it locally and They are the only local Triton dealer and they had not advertised or listed the features that mad the Triton router unique in Australia. It was a US retailer that sold it on its unique features as I was just about to purchase another brand from the USA. Carbatec reduced their Trition prices to what the Sydney and Melbourne retailers prices (not the phony RRP)

The fault of high costs in not just on the Retailers shoulders a lot of the fault is on the greedy owners of the retail properties and what they charge. And the greedy importers and middlemen charge.
The Chines online sellers are now working on very high margins as they have worked out what dumb Australian online shoppers will pay.
The best Chines online sites are those that are only Chines language only and will ship abroad.

    “An eBay 20% dale”

  • Carbatec and Hare & Forbes have collectively relieved me of my money many a time.

Australian owned does not attract me, But if

Although I think he meant to use a "." and made a typo.

Well there goes a couple of minutes I'm not getting back…

YES!!! Finally someone saying exactly what we have all been thinking. Thanks OP!

  • Your table saw shipped to Fremantle example doesn’t include all the customs and fumigation charges that you have to pay once it’s FOB. You’ll find there’s no way to import a single saw for anything approaching the retail price those shops are selling for.

After persevering through your comment, firstly Carbatec generally target the woodworking enthusiast & their staff are generally excellent with good product knowledge. They don't really go after the bargain hunter. I like browsing their shop at Auburn but don't buy much coz of the prices.
Bunnings staff wouldn't have the expert product knowledge that Carbatec staff have.

Once I find what I like in store, I'll go home and see if I can locate something similar on AliExpress. And then use Cashrewards too.

One caveat is that the brands Carbatec carry are quality. Can't the same for Bunnings and AliExpress. But this is OzB! I'd rather save a bit of cash.

    • Hey you seem to know what you are talking about :-)

Do you know of any cheaper alternatives to the carbatec pocket screws?

      • Do you mean Kreg screws?
Search 'pocket screws' on AliExpress. If you're willing to wait 3 weeks for delivery.

        • Yes that's what I mean, thanks will check it out.

    I agree.

  • "The Chines online sellers are now working on very high margins as they have worked out what dumb Australian online shoppers will pay. "

    Ya not wrong there Narelle

A special is not a special when you are comparing apples and apples. If you are comparing an apple that is 10% off RRP to a cheaper inferior apple then you will not be able to determine whether the cheaper inferior apple is a special or if the 10% off RRP original apple is still better value than the inferior apple even if the cheaper inferior apple is still significantly cheaper than the original apple at 10% off RRP.

** I tried to make this as readable as the OP. How'd I go?

My headache just got worse so I would say you have succeeded.

  • The government footed the bill in Aus and China footed alot of the post there.

Take it easy on the op everyone, everybody has their strengths and weaknesses.
There is always a mind that is more smarter/knowledgeable than the one we have, not everybody can have Newton's, Einstein's or Tesla's mind.
Offer constructive criticism that will help a person, because one day we may be on other end.

Advice for writing a long post in the future.

    • First, decide what you want the main point to be, what you want readers to get out of your post (eg Bunnings sucks?)
    • Then, write bullet points for an intro (the context, any info needed to understand the problem) - (eg Bunnings are convenient, want to buy screws)
    • Then, write bullet points for things you've tried or you have considered and what the result was, in a way that helps you start to get across your main point. (Eg Buying from elsewhere is cheaper, tried to get Bunnings to price match and they wouldn't)
    • Then, write bullet points linking the problem to the result of your attempts while bringing in the main point that you wanted people to understand. (Eg have to drive 10km to find cheaper screws or pay more at the local Bunnings, won't honour price match, ask for suggestions)

This way people will understand what you want to communicate and you'll likely get a lot more helpful responses. In the example maybe they'll say "try price matching this other store" or "you can buy those screws online for cheaper" etc

  • The best Chines online sites are those that are only Chines language only and will ship abroad.

Have you tried buying baby formula from these guys…what a rip off!

I made it half way through and I’m quite proud of my achievement. Very tired and have a headache now though.

  • What you need is a return of WA Salvage at Bibra Lake or Kwinana. They'd undercut everyone!
    Poor old Luigi.

  • And in all of that the important question was never asked - is Titanium coating on drill bits a waste of time? Are they any better than normal HSS?

They look prettier, but the coating is gone the first time you sharpen them so…

  • Cobalt drill are the best you can buy
