Virgin Australia: One-Way Flight to Los Angeles $593-$653 for Students & under 26's in June/July (Select Dates) @ STA Travel

161

Lots of dates have this deal right now on statravel.com.au. Search for Melbourne to Los Angeles One-Way for Student/Under 26, it will be the first one listed if it's available on your dates. Unfortunately linking directly to a search result doesn't work so you have to do it manually.

I'm looking at June 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th all with this deal available.

On Google Flights, the next cheapest flight listed for this route on virtually every day in June is a 26 hour China Southern flight at $770 with a stopover in China. The next cheapest direct flight is this same ticket except without the student deal at $1125.

I have booked one of these fares myself and I can confirm that they are normal economy fares with 2x 23kg checked bags and meals etc as normal.

If you're a gambling man, I've done some Google sleuthing and apparently no one ever actually asks for proof of student status when checking in with these fares. But I'm not taking that risk myself!

Under 31's appear to show up as 'youths' as well

      • Indeed. There are plenty of mature age students out there. It would be a very brave check in counter staffer to demand your student ID along with the passport, and if you fail to show the ID they refuse to issue you a ticket.

  • Nothing special

    one way?
    WOW thats just horrible.

Compared to all other one-way flights available right now on these dates, it's about $250-300 cheaper, and also direct instead of with a stop. They're always a lot more expensive than return flights.

      • If it is more expensive than return flights then especially as an ozbargainer why on earth do you buy one-way instead of return flight then. I have once bought a return flight LAX-MEL-LAX on Qantas for $990USD while their one-way flight was $1500USD.

        • Because it's cheaper than return flights, and also because one-way tickets have different purposes than return. If you're going on to another destination and flying back from there, for example, as I am.

Also, buying a return ticket without intending to use the actual second flight is technically breaking the terms of your agreement with the airline. Not sure if that could actually result in anything though.

        • @Georgevic: nothing will happen, ppl are missing their flight every day. Airlines doesn't care about it.
Those T&C about "beyond and before" your destination is not really enforced, it is mainly for the domestic US flights.

        • @Georgevic: Airlines such as Qantas penalise you $500 for missing a leg of a journey.

        • @catinjapan: My god, I never imagined. Tell me this is not common :OS

I would love to see a better One-way fare??

      • Sure, if you never intend on returning?

        • +1

Or if you intend on returning from another place… Not everyone spends their entire trip in the one country/city.

        • +1

@Georgevic: if you intend to go back from another city, it is better to search Multi-City itinerary and it will be cheaper than buying one-way. One way ticket is a very bad way to buy airlines ticket.

          @samehada:

Multi city bookings are actually more expensive because they're just a bunch of one way tickets put together, except with less choice because you'll be booking from partner airlines only rather than different carriers with cheaper tickets.

        • @Georgevic:

Sometimes (rarely) a multi city can be better.

Eg/ was looking at Mel-sgn-lhr which was more expensive then Mel-sgn-Han-lhr both options in Vietnam airlines. As one ways it was double the price.

Really just depends on what you are trying to achieve and if your lucky enough to find connections which are cheaper then one-ways

This doesn’t apply to low cost carriers though

It's to get all the hipsters to go there and never return

If entering as a tourist, just remember to have proof of a departing flight booked upon arrival, otherwise you could face real issues with US customs and immigration.

    • +1

When I went through LAX in August 2017 I got questioned quite extensively by immigration, and certainly much more than in any other country. They really want to know where you're going, who with, what you're doing there, and when you're leaving, and you had better fire off answers to their questions quick smart. And all that for someone who doesn't look like a person on Trumps 'bad' country hit list.

      • Absolutely.

The first time I entered the US, I flew in from Mexico as a 21 y.o. backpacker back in 2006. Although I had a return ticket and credit card, providing access to funds and plans to exit the country within two weeks, they absolutely grilled me and were threatening to deny entry.

5 further visits, 12 years later and I still get a hard time from immigration officials.

Depart 4th June return 18th June direct Flights from Melb. to LAX flying United Airlines for $921-960 (depending who you book thorough), results from I want that flight.

Melbourne, Australia to Los Angeles, United States 14h 10m
    United Airlines, UA99, Economy 14h 10m
Dep: Mon, 4 Jun09:25 MEL Melbourne, Australia
Arr: Mon, 4 Jun06:35 LAX Los Angeles, United States
Los Angeles, United States to Melbourne, Australia 15h 50m
    United Airlines, UA98, Economy 15h 50m
Dep: Mon, 18 Jun22:35 LAX Los Angeles, United States
Arr: Wed, 20 Jun07:25 MEL Melbourne, Australia

Pretty easy to find cheaper… no deal here

    • +1

One-way fares have different purposes to return fares. Not everyone intends to fly back from the same city they arrived in. Not sure why this is so confusing really?

I'm going Melbourne > LA > Buenos Aires > Melbourne. Buying a return ticket for this itinerary would make no sense.

      • Actually its probably cheaper to do this.
        MEL-LAX
        LAX - EZE
        EZE - LAX
        LAX- MEL

Given also many of the other oneway flights probably dont have good student fare deals as well

While the MEL-LAX leg might be reasonable, which it is for oneway, buying other oneway tickets for each leg can add up to being rather expensive

Your post makes good value for students, say wanting to go away for more than 12 months, or returning home, like US students who have come over on an exchange plan

        • Wouldn't doubt it depending on the circumstances and how willing one is to take roundabout routes. But for my dates (June to December), this is more expensive and a lot longer too. BA to LA is actually quite a long flight, with a stopover for the cheapest fares - about 14 hours minimum. Then another 14 hours to Melbourne.

        • @Georgevic: Without knowing the intricacies of your flight timing and how much you have spent, its hard to say what is worse/better. And specific days. A flight one day later can sometimes double the cost.

There are no direct flights from EZE to MEL, and Direct flights EZE to LAX can be expensive. DFW would be cheaper, but your plans may be only for a LAX stopover.

The point with travel is sometimes thinking outside the square may pop up some savings both time and cost wise.

So really as others say this is of limited appeal, but unlike others, I agree it could be a deal, and worth knowing.

Not all deals here have to appeal to everyone, if it helps someone else then it was worth posting
