  • Bought a couple at this price from Clive Peeters in QLD a couple of weeks ago… seem to work OK.

At this price they are perfect for transferring your favourite bootable CD's (much faster) such as Hirens Boot CD etc

    • Systmworks, have you actually been able to successfully boot from these? If so, could you please give me a few pointers?

I bought two of these for exactly that same purpose at NH last week for $6, but no matter what I do, have not been able to successfully boot from the Lexar 4GB Firefly drives. I can boot from three other brand USB drives but no luck from the Lexar. Disappointing. I tried everything, even a Lexar USB format tool, without success. Booting fails on two different brand laptops and a desktop, so it's unlikely to be BIOS related. So far I've tried FlashBoot, PE to USB, WinToFlash, HP USB tool, Lexar USB tool, nothing worked.

HN also had a black Toshiba drive in the bargain bin for $6, I haven't tried that though it's not as sexy as the Lexar and doesn't have a detachable keyring mount.

      • Sorry I have not had a chance to even take them out of the box yet.. just bought them on a whim

        • Correction: one is still in the box, the other has had a single 700 MB file copied onto it.

Formatted capacity is 3.7 GB - not sure how that compares to other 4GB drives ?

Maybe not the ideal forum for this, but I am still bothered by the two e's in "Clive Peeters"

I can see how that could keep someone awake at night…..

  • can you tell us how many are left?
I don't want to waste my time if there's none left

    • 50+ easy, full to the top

  • Meh. Similar prices $5-6 at harvey Norman , good guys etc etc. lately.

  • I strongly advise all to stay away from these, which I had picked up from DSE. These are horribly slow, so slow that I ended up binning one of the two I have out of frustration……..

I get 18MB/s read, a bit less than 4MB /s write. I thought that was OK.

  • These drives have very large light at the end which flash VERY bright. Noteworthy because a) you might love it or b) it may render the drive useless for intended purpose.

The large flashing LED was distracting and dangerous in the car when I hooked the USB key up to my car stereo. It would also be horrible if you wanted to plug it into the front of a DVR or set-top box for transferring TV shows, because you'd have an LED constantly flashing while you're watching something else.

I successfully pried the case off with a screwdriver (luckily it's not glued) and clipped the LED off with wire cutters, but most people probably don't have the tools/patience for this and of course technically it voids the warranty.

    Hope this helps somebody…

yeah agreed mate, the red light on these almost looks like a laser beam in the dark.
