[New Customer w/ Ported Number] Telstra BYO 25GB for $49/Mth (12mth Contract) + $200 Gift Card @ JB Hi-Fi

2270

Hey all it is back again!

I went to Telstra in Fountain Gate today and whilst signing up for the $49 plan (25gb / unlimited Phone & SMS) I looked across the way and saw the same deal at JBHifi but with a $200 gift voucher. I asked Telstra store to help out but they sent me over the road as they couldn't match the deal!

I cannot find a link but I can confirm it is available in all stores [Link added - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/features/phones/activatenow/]

Bring your existing phone number to Telstra and you'll get 25GB data usage, Unlimited Calls and Txt to Std. Aust Numbers, $10 Monthly Port in Credit

Plus you get a $200 JB Hifi Gift Card

Minimum commitment of plan over 12 mths is $588. You must port in from a different provider to get this offer.

        • @Sydney11:
very poor in japan, but it works once a while
          Havent tried other countries

    • Ditto, it's even worth it for the annual Euro/overseas trip alone. Only reason I'm kinda sticking with Voda.

  • +1

I hate Telstra and have always argued against the idea that they have the best reception (or more so that the premium price was worth it in capital cities). I've lived in Regional WA and not have an issue with Virgin (Optus) or Vodafone. Now I work in a well established Perth suburb, and my location is a Vodafone/Optus blackspot, and colleagues with Telstra have no problem. I'll have to consider moving when my contract with Vodafone expires at the end of the year. I'll miss my $31 20gb, but these deal is about the same if you factor in the gift card. No more $5 roaming though:(

    • Be a Good ozbargainer: Complain to your provider; I have had colleagues moved remote on voda and Optus plans and when they couldn't get reception they have either managed to terminate their plans early or get hefty discounts for the remainder of the contracts.

  • For those jumping into this and using the port out and then in again trick. I would recommend not doing it on a weekend or hurrying things along in regards to getting the service cleared out of Telstra to port back in as a "new customer". Don't jump on live chat and get them to remove it out of their system manually.

I did both of these things and whilst I have the $59 ($49 with $10 discount) 25GB plan and JB gift card which I'm feeling great about I've been left with a mess. A mobile number that's owned by Vodafone because they initially processed the port in just fine on a prepaid sim and I ported back to Telstra and Vodafone have reprocessed the port back to them for "unknown reasons but assumed because I hopped so quickly. Telstra saw this and wanting to charge me a $359 plan termination fee even though the plan is active and my sim is connected the Telstra network. It's very messy and I'm not going to go into the exact timeline here.

Tomorrow I have to ring the Telstra porting team to get the low down and then perhaps Vodafone to settle the score. I did this in March and just now got my Telstra bill to find the nasty situation.

Overall great plan and feel free to do the port-out and then back in trick but use your patience :)

    • Yes this is EXACTLY what happened to me. Was a painful experience trying to fix it all up, but worth it in the end.

My advice is to post on FB and ask for complaints team to call you. Live chat, Call Centre and In Store reps were useless.

  • If anyone knows how this can be done online, please inform us. I live more than 2 hours away from a JbHiFI store, so would be great to know the whole process if done online. Its asking for sim serial on the first form page hence my confusion.

  • Free oversea sms ?

  • -1
    • 'Yes' Optus

      • Yeah how does Telstra compare elsewhere?

        • ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ muncan can’t be everywhere (man)

    • It says your provider is TPG?

      • TPG uses Optus I believe.

        • Confusion. Maybe I'll get a Telstra SIM and try it out direct. I am out of contract in 3 weeks and will go BYO

        • @D6C1: I was with Optus first, bad coverage in my office. Then I had Kogan (Vodafone) excellent speed but again bad coverage in my office. Here almost everybody uses Vodafone or Kogan and they have same bad experience here. Then I bought a prepaid Telstra package, you know the half price ones at Coles/Woolies. Tested it and after two days of testing. I ported to Telstra with the Pixel 2 XL deal and happy with it. You can do the same. Yea you would spend 15~20$ but better to spend some extra than to be stuck in Telstra contract.

        • @idawood: Thanks Ida. I think ill do that.

        • TPG uses Voda

        • I'm quite sure it's vodafone.

    • I have a similar experience with Optus and Vodafone. Where they work, the download speed is much better than Telstra. I think Vodafone was the fastest wherever I tested. But here the emphasis is "Where they work". Telstra, though slower, have much better coverage overall in terms of 4G (experienced in Northern beaches and Western Sydney).

  • It seems to be a great deal as i'm willing to leave optus and i have a descent phone

biggest questrion here is, what about the 10$ credit that optus offers for overseas calls?

i've got some business in brazil and those 10$credit are worth 100minutes which is more than enough, telstra seems not to be offering that on this plan or it's my impression?

  • Anything like the pixel 2 deal available?

  • What happens at the end of the 12 months? Does it go to $59 per month after that?

    • Nope, same plan unless you re-contract or cancel your plan.

  • FYI extra data is $10 for 1GB if you use up your 25GB.

Any idea if you can roll over data? I suspect not…

I'm currently on Woolies pre-paid, $40.50 for 15GB Telstra 4G Wholesale, with rollover.

15GB is enough in regular months but not enough when I travel with work (streaming Netflix in hotels etc). With pre-paid I can just recharge a week earlier.

    • EDIT: data expires each month

  • +1

Current Telstra PAYG customer. I'm going to port out to a PAYG Optus plan and then jump back to Telstra to get this deal. Pain in the neck but true OzBargain spirit.

  • Any deals on 2x plans, I and another family member on Kogan and Optus, want to move to this deal..

Can you data share with family members on the one bill? Will they allow this?

    • yes if both numbers are belonging to one person. if not do a transfer so both numbers belong to one person.

  • +3

FYI, If you add another phone number to your Telstra account, you can share the 50gigs, and they give you free additional 10gigs of data, so 60gigs all up between two people. Sweet deal.

    • Fantastic can this be done on the JB HiFi deal though for 2x $200 vouchers?

      • if it's two numbers being ported over, then yes

  • Anyone know when this deal expires?

    • +1

Looks to be ongoing according to posts above :)

    • Current information suggests April 30th, 2018

    • +2

I can confirm from a rep instore, this deal will expire on april 30th

  • Would they give student discount on top of this?

  • does belong count as non telstra?

  • Can I assume boost mobile has almost same level of coverage as telstra, but better than aldi and mobile?

  • Legend! I needed this as of the end of this month. Thank you very much.

I ported from Telechoice a Telstra MNVO.

$200 gift card, NRL and AFL (free to stream) and apple music (although the app sucks and the verification only works occasionally).

    25gb for 49 a month. Great deal.

  • That's legit!

  • 49-(200/12)=$32.3333333 a month

    Anything wrong with my math?

That's assuming I get value for the $200 card or sell for $200.

I may sell for less yes maybe

    • Your math is right.
Or get this, sell the phone (I sold mine for $1035) and pay 49-(1035/24) = $5.88 per month.

Or even better, stack both deals and you're in the black.

      • Yeah just getting out of contract. Rather not be locked in for another 2 years

        • Use it as a Data Sim. You won't find cheaper.

  • Got this but slightly better. $200 GC, $44 p/m, 2x Sim, 30GB data

    • How? Please share with us.

      • Joel tell us mate

        • Asked, via chat, for extra $10 discount and was provided. For a total of $20.
Asked, via chat, for multi-service bonus data (since I have 2x Sims).

        • @joelhinch: Thanks. Worth a shot

      • See below.

  • For those of you interested, you can get a Samsung S9 on a similar deal, if you are a new port in customer:
    - sign up to $49 12 month byo
    - buy the Samsung S9 64gb for $699

    See S9 JB deal https://imgur.com/a/ZzaEC7A

    Ends 4/5/18

  • I am with Optus. They did me the $50 SIM only plan for $32 so no need to switch to Telstra.

    Win

    • Do you do it in the Optus store or online?

      • Online through chat

  • Anyone in Melbourne CBD who wants the plan but prefers cash? I want to get the S9 in this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/375033
I'll pay you $200 cash and pay for the phone. But the phone invoice has to be in my name.

  • is this 25gb per month? or 25gb for the entire contract?

  • And despite the above posts the deal is still active on the jb website….
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/features/phones/activatenow/

  • In JB right now guy claiming deal no longer actively but is on their website..
Also saying instead of $200 it’s now $150 towards an outright phone..not interested in that

    • +1

Surely they have to honour what they advertise on their website.

      • You would think..
The claim “I can’t even enter this on the system, as it will only authorize and print a $150 In-store phone rebate offer” “they were meant to take it down on Friday but obviously didn’t, and there’s no one going to do it now, we’ve been turning people away all weekend”

Get it’s not the bloke in the stores fault, but am pretty miffed they couldn’t do it. Called another store and tried, bloke was more helpful (looking to ways/other perks) but even when pressed said it just can’t be done

        • I called up my local JB Hi-Fi today and had a similar issue but because it was on the website, he escalated it to his mangaer and they still honoured it. IT will probably get rid of it soon though.

        • It was supposed to be expired as of 4/5/18

        • @soaring:
          Damn good work.
Wish the two jbhifis I tried were as accommodating as yours

        • So they are offering the $49 with a $150 rebate now on their system?

  • Offer has now been removed from the JB website.

  • is this deal still going?

  • Still going until end of May I was told.

    Signed up the other day.

    Another extension.

    • Did you sign up in store?

  • Yep it's still going, was advertised outside the store at Kedron, Brisbane…

  • Is this still going as $49pm or $59pm?

Yes I can read, but one of the pictures the telstra employee posted up said $59.

PLUS, what happens after the 12 months? We no longer get the $10 discount and lose the extra 10/15gig data?

    • The discount and data is for the life of the plan.

  • Got this today. Deal still running as mentioned.

    Awesome deal.

  • So tempted in getting this. $699 for S9 is a great price!

  • @Dealhunter967671 is this applicable when transferring from Belong?

    • Sorry I didn't see your tag! Yes, Belong is considered a port in, so it would be good.
