  • Good Guys eBay same price c&c, plus can use pull5 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Sony-KD55X8500E-55-139cm-UHD…

    • $1304 <> $1043

      • I'm getting 1304 when I follow the link

        • Yeah 1043 is for the x7000

65" X8500E - $1739, can anyone give their opinion in regard to this one in comparison with TCL C2/X2 series?

    • Interested as well in others opinions for this.

I saw the 65 inch Hisense N7 in store and wasn’t a fan. Theres too much shadow/tail on fast moving objects on screen

      • yep, saw n7 in-store and cannot say it looked better than TCL C2, they didn't have X2 model though…

Why are people buying LED LCD TVs when the picture quality is not as good as OLED TV's.

    • +4

because OLED TVs have multiple issues with longevity especially fading, apparently JB replace their display stock within 6 months due to the loss of picture quality, brightness and dynamic range.

      • +2

I have never heard this, where did you get this information?

I was literally in HN yesterday looking at the C8 and it happened to be next to the C7, I compared the two and couldn't notice a significant difference (i.e. certainly no obvious fading) and having researched the differences between the C7 and C8 I felt the additional $2400 to buy the C8 was not worth it so attempted to haggle a better price on the C7.

The salesmen only had the C7 display left and tried to sell it to me, I refused and guessed it would of been on display for 12 months, he said he could tell me for sure and turns out it was on display since 04/04/2017 (seen on the PC system myself). He told me it still comes with 12 months warranty and I basically looked at him like how stupid do you think I am? I can't stand the stuff these guys try and pull sometimes, I said the TV has been on 7 days a week for at least 8 hours for the past 12 months, no way I would want it. mind you he couldn't answer my question about 4K Dolby Vision source material since the TV wasn't HDMI 2.1 (his response was read the back of the DVD pack and it will play what ever it says the DVD is) facepalm

Point is having done those kind of hours would the equivalent of around 2 hour a day use over around 5 years with no obvious issues, that being said the C8 had a dead pixel.

        • That info was from a sales assistant at JB.

        • @pket: interesting, I may be able to find out more about this, if true very disappointing, was the information based on all OLEDs or specifically 2017 LG OLEDs?

        • @pket:

Sounds sketchy. If this was a widespread problem, OLED owners would be screaming about this from the rooftops.

      • Thanks for this info. I really wish plasma screens were still getting manufactured.

    • +2

Pricing? the cheapest one is around $2000 excluding the black friday deal.

    • +3

OLEDs require viewing in a dark room. I never noticed this, looking at OLEDs at JB Hifi but I was recently watching a friend's Sony A1 in a relatively dark room (during daytime) with light streaming in through the vertical curtain slats. The glass surface of the OLED screen showed a reflection of the curtain slats and noticeably the bright gaps of light coming through. Pretty distracting as you had these brights strips of sunlight covering parts of the picture. LED LCD's have a matte surface and don't have this issue.

      • Sounds familiar, I have similar issues with my plasma screen.

      • +1

I have an LED LCD TV and have the same issue on bright sunny days. It's not unique to OLEDs.

  • +2

I've still got the Samsung PNF8500 60" plasma TV. To the people in the know, how does this stack up to all the new LED and OLED offerings?
The only issue I have with it is the amount of power it consumes, but it's very hard to find the maximum power consumption rates for the new TVs for comparison.

    • +1

      Same (the 51" version)

I think the pannel looks far far better than any of the current LCDs. Mine is 5 years old and still going strong. I did a bit of digging around the power differences and, while the plasma does use a lot more, they weren't huge enough to bother me. You're only talking $20-$30 p/a extra on your power bill. Not worth it for a downgrade in quality & the price of a new TV.

The downside is I've moved house 3 times and it's freaking heavy.

      • +1

How many hours on yours? Mine has 8400 hours and not one problem - touch wood.

        • +1

No idea. Probably shitloads. I'd say 5-8 hrs p/day so 6.5 * 365 * 5 = 11,862. and probably much more per day now the MRS is at home with the little one.

Is this something I can get out of the TV? NVM, just googled it, I'll have to check when I get a chance.

Hook up a watt meter to this and will be immediately motivated to replace it, my old Panasonic Plasma got the boot when I realised it was using something like 800-900 watt (something like 30c per hour to watch TV in SA) compared to the new low end 60" LED sucking <70 watt (2.5c per hour to run).

        • +2

          800-900W

WTF, your old Panasonic had issues then. According to testing here the 64" version uses an average of 310W.

I'd estimate my 51" below 200w given the screen size difference (stats say 160w). We're talking about a few cents per day here. Not worth buying a new TV & putting up with worse quality.

        • @ChickenTalon: I reckon @jason101 is probably on the money.

My Samsung plasma would noticeably warm up the room after an hour or so (big room, high ceilings).

I left it on the wall when I moved. Great panel, but not a non-negligible power hit, and the few hundred bucks I got for it went a long way to buying a new TV, with HDR, 4K and more power efficiency. Win win.

        • +1

Heck I would keep the plasma and move interstate. You know it makes sense.

        • I've checked mine and it uses around 300 to 400 watts depending on what is being displayed.
This is about 10 cents an hour to run, about $210 a year going on my usage and time owned.
So that's around 57 cents a day, not too bad for a supposedly power guzzeling Plasma from hell :) .

        • Mine 200 watts on average, peaks at about 430 on white screens.
I had to get mine repaired recently when the PSU blew up.

      • According to Wikipedos, typical 50" plasma uses about 400W. How cheap is your power!?

        • Mine uses less than that unless I'm displaying a static white screen.

If this is the Android TV version, I would steer clear.
I have a support tech here right now struggling to fix all of the problems.
They replaced the panel and the motherboard.
Unfortunately, we have to wait for software updates to fix the sluggish loading times, random freezing, apps crashing and random TV reboots.

I have an older model though, KD49x8300C so they may have fixed some of the issues.
Definitely try it out before you buy.

All being said, the Sony support has been really good and helpful but yeah bad implementation going with Android TV.

  • i have the 8500E .Motion clarity isnt as good as my old samsung though everyone says sony is better in this area, rest is fine and they hav fixed kodi 5.1 pass thru

why is it so hard to find the 55" x9000E anywhere! never on sale

  • That’s a big jump in price from 70-75 inches long, wonder if the thickness is also a factor.

    • They are completely different models. Not all about screen size.

  • +4

Can you get one with a black background instead of the sunset?

That’s why I mentioned it as I got Harvey Norman to price match themselves after purchasing on Sunday at the higher price.

  • Is the 65" X8500E worth the extra $174 compared to the 65" X7000E?

    • I know only the X7000D but I would think yes it does

      • Thinking of impulse purchasing the 65" X8500E..

Should I? (is there any reason I shouldn't)

  • Been looking for a TV with a ethernet port because my router is stuck in a brick wall garage but I've got ports around the house.
Doesn't seem like many TV's have this feature.
Anyone have any recommendations? Only one I've noticed that have it is Hisense

    • Ethernet over power, but the "2gbit" version, which gives you about 80mbit in practice.

      • Sorry I dont' understand what that means. Do you mean that these Sony TV's have ethernet ports or do I need to purchase an additional accessory?

        • Sorry mate, I miss-read, thought you said you haven't got cables going through your house.
          Maybe a wifi repeater then?

        • @idonotknowwhy: No worries, that can be a solution. But because of your comment, I google power over ethernet and found out how cool the Powerline thing from D-Link is. Might have not needed to waste the money of adding ethernet ports all around the house when we built.

        • @Kinko82: My D-Link Powerline gear turned out to be rubbish. Over many years I went from Powerline NetComm NP285 (85 Mbps) to TP-Link TL-PA211 Powerline which was a big improvement to D-Link Powerline DHP-346AV & DHP-1320 which started out fine then slowly reduced in speed overtime until it was useless due to dropouts etc, then back to the old TP-Link until one got zapped in a storm, then back to the old NetComm which still worked well and recently changed to a TP-Link 300Mbps AV500 Powerline combo after a great Ozbargain (TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT 300MBPS AV500 Wi-Fi Extender for $64.65, got cheaper after looking and waiting) and it is awesome compared to the rest.

Anyone want to buy one TL-PA211 or D-Link Powerline DHP-346AV & DHP-1320 cheap or working NP285 pair cheap? The D-Link both have 4 ports so either can be used as a cheap switch and one is a full wireless router along with the 4 ports. Both have uses even without Powerline. My experience says go for TP-Link.

    • For whats its worth, I have a cheapy Hisense in the bedroom and I used the ethernet port until I was forced to get a Wireless Access Point to rectify wifi issues as similarly to you, my modem/router is far away behind a brick wall.
I've got an Ubiquiti UniFi AP and I now use both my TV and MiBox on wifi and I have no issues whatsoever.

Definitely look in to getting a solid WAP instead of limiting your search to TVs with ethernet, the plus side is your mobile devices will also benefit.

  • Wouldn't mind a deal on the X9000E 75".
When you are next in JB take a look at the energy ratings.
The 9000 is fairly efficient but the 9400 is not, only 1 or 2 star from memory.
For day to day viewing, the 9000 looked terrific to me and will produce much less heat.
Sure the 9400 will be a great picture but may burn your retinas out. I couldn't see much diff in the shop.

  • Hey guys.. the 43” X8000E is $799 in stores for anyone interested. Just bought one today at Sony Store Parramatta Westfield.

    • That's $200 less than what's quoted on their website. How did you manage to get this discount?

      • I didnt even try.. it was on the sticker for the tv.. thats why I bought it automatically.. i dont know how to post a picture.. but i took a picture of it, if anyone needs it

For those wondering why they didn’t receive an email from EB World, maybe it is because they only send it to Level 4 EB customers. I asked a EB Games staff for a spare code since I was desperate, but he told me he already used it, and i didn’t get an email since I’m a level 2 customer.

  • got the 55 inch x8500e today at TGG for $1304 C&C, and been told I could get $200 store credit via email. It was $1500 in-store, its a 1 day sale today (Friday the 13th sale)

    • Why bother paying extra money and receiving store credit instead of cash back, when you can get the same model at same price + 2% cash back reward @ official Sony Australia online store?
