Since Amazon bought Ring, they dropped the price to US$100 in USA.

Have installed one of these, not terribly user friendly and i'm concerned that it will loose support and updates in the future.
    Just though it worth sharing.

    • Why do you say this?

      • Because it took 3 factory resets before it would find an ordinary access point on chan 6, and the setup relies on an android / iOS app, and things like these are renowned for being abandoned at some point.
This is not a 20 year doorbell solution.

        • +5

I set one up for my parents and it took about 5 minutes, works perfectly (Ring video doorbell 2). I also didn't buy one thinking it would last for 20 years - about 5 years would be great for me.

          My parents love it already.

$3 a month for cloud features is pretty damn cheap.

        • @hypie:

So it also acts as a security camera system?.

        • +1

Why do you think this would get abandoned ?
Can you suggest a 20 year doorbell solution ?

        • @yellowrain:

He probably thinks that the Android/iOS app might get abandoned in a few years and so may not work on future Android or iOS versions.

        • +1

          @hypie:
That's great, but keep in mind your needs and experiences might not be the same as everyone elses, and that said my comments remain valid.
You comments will be as important to some people as mine are to other people.
          It's not a competition.

          @yellowrain:
          Call an electrician (or not).
Have a powersupply mounted in your switchboard, and a good old fashioned ding dong door bell wired in.
          20+ years easily.
Might not be for everyone but don't underestimate simplicity.

          @hollykryten:
Ever known an app related to hardware that has lasted forever?
It's a realistic point of view.
          I work in IT
          I love tech
But i'm cautious (and rightly so) of devices that rely on apps / services.
A recent example of this all going wrong…

        • @virtual81: Same as how NetGear abandoned VueZone in favour of Arlo.

After December 31, 2017, the following will apply:
          - All VueZone hardware products including base station and camera will cease to communicate with the VueZone back end
          - Any videos and photos you have saved in the VueZone cloud will not be retrievable
          - Access to the VueZone web application (my.vuezone.com) and to the VueZone mobile applications will be unavailable to all customers
          - VueZone service plans will no longer be supported and no service plan fees will be charged after this date
          - NETGEAR Customer Support will no longer provide technical support for VueZone products

        • @hollykryten:

It can be used that way, it is completely wifi (with some solar powered and hard wired options. There is a decent range of cameras. The unit comes with live view and alerts. However you can pay $100 per year for a unlimited cameras, or $30 a month for one camera (i.e. the ring pro 2) to upgrade to a 60 day recording plan. I find this fairly reasonable. The motion sensor is far better than my swann system which gets triggered by shadows on the lowest setting. They will replace the ring if it gets stolen for free (read t&c).

I think it is great for monitoring who enters the home, drops off packages, if you are not home you can answer. The other cameras would probably work together to make a pretty good home security system.

        • @virtual81:

I agree, your experience is valid. But have we really even had 20 years to gauge whether some companies will continue to back it's app software. Once the ring was set up, did you have any other issues?

        • @hypie:
Poor video quality and delayed alert.
The Ring is not my thing, thus i'd never buy one.
But having had the experience of setting one up even if i was looking for something like it i'd still not buy one after this experience.
At the price they're asking it needs to operate flawlessly and have better video quality than it does.
The video issue could just be because a small camera is jammed behind a wide lens.
I have a surveillance system with a couple of $20 Xiaomi cameras that i expected to be crap, but actually works incredibly well, and has superior video quality.

  • I have one, Endless trouble. 1st one died in 3 months, warranty replacement from ring without issue. Always dropping out, always delayed, sometimes never rings.
I do have it on my front gate but have extenders to make sure it is in service though.
My optus NBN is unreliable shite too. May be a factor. Just got new NBN so hopefully may be better.

    • +4

Yeah sounds like a reception issue more than anything else.

      • Its definatlely a bit more than just reception. The device is flawed and not real time.

        • What router do you have?

  • Anyone knows if JB will price match somehow?

    Thanks

    • I'm sure that JB would price match Amazon AU and knock it off down from their $179 price. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/ring/ring-video-doorbell-satin-nic…

    • Office works also sell them and will price match and beat 5%

      • There will be no price match beat at Officeworks considering that they have their price at $148.

    • JB has now dropped the price down to $149.

Harvey Norman has the price also at $149.

Officeworks has their price at $148.

Obviously done to avoid a price match beat against Amazon.

    • If you want a price match you're best off going to Bunnings - theirs are still more expensive so can be matched, and they beat the price by 10% (where I'm pretty sure JB just match the price, and officeworks are a 5% price beat).

  • Being the owner of a Ring Pro you need a good upload speed (2mbit plus) otherwise your recording may not work properly, and sometimes the doorbell press won't even register. I'm still waiting for NBN and so I expect things to improve. Also the difference between this and the Pro is that the Pro is hardwired, no batteries.

    • +1

The normal ring doorbell can be hardwired as well, it just also has a battery if you don't have an existing hardwired door bell.

  • I would avoid this model if you are a fan of image quality. 720p on a current flagship mobile looks horrible.
I would go for v2 or pro if you want a Ring product.

I am waiting for nest hello to come to Aus as the image quality is much better.

    • Yeah well the V2 model is the one with 1080p. But that's $299 at Bunnings. https://www.bunnings.com.au/ring-v2-video-doorbell_p4211501

But personally if i had enough to pay for $299 i would pay the extra slight more to get the Pro model for $348 at Bunnings and it also has 1080p. I would think that it would have more features.

    • I'm not a fan of image quality on a doorbell.

  • Is Ring 2 worth the extra 167 bucks?

    • +1

Do you need 1080p video or are you content with 720p. That is the question?.

By the way Bunnings has it for $299. That's an extra $150.

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ring-v2-video-doorbell_p4211501

If you have a JB, HN or some other store nearby to the Bunnings which offers a price match then you might be able to get a price match.

      • 720 is plenty. I'm not watching Avatar, its just making sure the delivery man is not a burgler!
But you also have to factor in the 'Chime' for another $48. Kind of a rip off for a doorbell…

  • Don't forget these Ring Chime. It's your doorbell ringer any where in the home.

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/ring-chime…

    • The chime is pretty expensive for what it is. If you need one in the house permanently you can buy an android phone cheaper (https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/telstra-li…) and just leave this plugged in all the time - you now have a chime in the house! You could also leave the phone unlocked all the time and set the ring app to open full screen on event and you now not only have a chime, but it automatically shows you who's at the door!

  • The best thing about these is if you order from Amazon, they can drop your parcel straight on to the kitchen bench even when you aren't home.

    • And accidentally knock over my Google Home while they're at it?

  • I dont have wifi internet at home, will it still work?

    • It doesn't require a WiFi router. It will still work as long as you have a Smartphone or Tablet computer. You can connect your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet straight to it in a direct Ad-Hoc WiFi connection.

It's in WI-FI SETUP and then step 4 of that in the user manual.

"4. After putting the Ring Video Doorbell in setup mode, you will be
prompted to go into your smartphone’s or tablet’s Wi-Fi Settings"

"5. In the list of available networks, find and select the network labelled Ring-xxxxxx"

      https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/E1I-CD2BeQS…

      • cool thanks, i guess it will only work when I am home and have the smartphone with me.

So no remote accepting call/motion sensor notifications/other notifications for me (when im not home).

    • +1

You don't have wifi internet at home.
You don't have wifi internet at home?
You don't have wifi internet at home!

      • I used to have home internet, but only get 1.5mbps connection speed (download). So now im just using optus mobile data 120gb/mth and getting 40mbps (90mbps when network is not congested). mobile hotspot to my laptop when required.

  • +2

The price at Officeworks is $148 which now makes that the best deal if you can go to the store and do a pickup.
