Update Apr 11: Dell have removed the ability to customise this beyond the default (so no 1080p screen, no reduced warranty, no i5 CPUs, etc).

Specs:

  • Intel Core i7-7820HQ Processor(Quad Core 2.90GHz, 3.90GHz Turbo, 8MB 45W, w/Intel HD Graphics 630)
  • 16GB (1x16GB) 2400MHz DDR4 Non-ECC SDRAM
  • 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD Class 40
  • Nvidia Quadro M1200M with 4GB GDDR5
  • 15.6" UltraSharp™ UHD IGZO (3840x2160) Touch
  • Win 10 Pro
  • 3Yr Onsite Service

According to Dell this is $4,437 off the regular price of $7,235.80 (which seems very expensive).

It's the 'pro' version of an XPS 15, so you get the same body and screen but with Quadro M1200 graphics instead of GTX 1050, Intel WiFi instead of Killer, and 3 year onsite warranty.

If you custom configure it you can get it well below $2000.

Example: 1080p / i5 7440HQ / 16GB / 512MB SSD = $1798.90

    512MB M.2 SSD

    That's a lot of storage

    • Oops, GB not MB. Fixed.

      • Another one on the bottom.

  • +7

Huge heat throttling issues according to notebookcheck. I don't understand manufacturers making 'workstation' laptops that have these beefy cpu's but then go ahead and make them 7mm thin with 1 fan.

    • -1

      For undemanding work

    • Throw an i5 in there though and it should be good to go - and miles cheaper.

    • There's an confirm it has two fans. Overheated once but that was when I had way too many things open including a Virtual Machine.

    • -2

1 fan is too many. XPS 2-in-1 has 0 fans, I bought one recently and I'm not a fan of the heat, so I've returned it.

      • +7

You don't like heat, but a single fan (the thing that manages heat) is too many?

        • +1

Its sarcasm.. I didnt know there was no fan on the laptop before I bought it until I noticed the heat issue.

I agree to the comment that the manufacturer seems to not think about thus in their design.

Its good to have thin laptop but if its burning under normal load, then it becomes an issue especially if you use it on your lap which I did in my case.

  • This or a MacBook Pro

    • +5

      This for sure

    • Neither really. The XPS line has problems with heat / quality control and the Macbook is outrageously expensive.

      • This is a Precision not an XPS but if its the same chassis then perhaps heat may be an issue.

        • There's also many cases of the hinges cracking/breaking off with both the XPS 13 and 15.

        • @c0balt:

That sucks, as the Precision line used to be very well built.

        • +1

          @xuqi:

Having had a play with a colleagues XPS 15 myself, it feels like it's built really well and that includes the hinge.

Might be one of those cases where it's only well known because it's such a popular laptop and Dell have sold a mountain of them over the years and that's why there's so many cases of the hinge issues when searching for it on google.

Either way, can't hurt to be aware of any potential issues.

        • @c0balt:

yes, lhs hinge has been going in my xps17 for the last 6 months, requiring extreme care to open it. LCD bezel is all broken, a common problem according to searches.

        • @effgee: The L…X range of XPS laptops are a completely different series. Your XPS17, assuming it was the latest, is the equivalent of 2 full revisions behind the current XPS13/15 builds.

        • @Singu1arity:
Yes, it's getting old (4-5 years) and I'm half way thru replacing it.
So yes my comment is probably irrelevant.

    • +5

      MacBook Pro any day

      • +1

Macbooks generally will last for 3-5 years no worries. Still running my mid 2012 Pro Retina model with same battery which gives around 3-5 hours. Newer ones are like 8-10 hours.

        • +1

Agreed they also hold their value compared to windows laptops.

        • +5

          @hotzone:
I'm not exactly sure why people are all about holding their value.
I expect my laptop to work for me till death.

        • +1

@cwongtech: because you can sell it off and get a faster Laptop?

        • @JuliusSeizure:
I choose a medium specced windows laptop, max out RAM and SSD (1TB) for $400, at 60% of the price of a mac. I expect it to last 4-5 years.
You won't notice that much change in speed with an SSD.

Don't really need it to "hold its value" in this case. The laptop has given me plenty of value over its life of service at lower cost.

        • +1

          @cwongtech:

What if at the end of those 4 years you could sell it for half what you paid originally?

          e.g.
          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-MacBook-Pro-15-Mid-2014-2-…

        • @c0balt: Then the buyer is an idiot. Buying something used, with no warranty and a dying battery. Their products do tend to attract a lot of this kind of people though.

        • +3

@lostn: whether the buyer is an idiot or not, there are buyers for them. The Apple PC & notebook resale market has been very consistent on this.

        • @DonWilson: It's not just PCs, it's iPhones as well. They retain a stupid amount of resell value. It doesn't cost much to get a brand new one which will have a few generations of updated specs, meaning longer app and OS support, a fresh new battery, and warranty. Not to mention new condition, where you can be sure it wasn't abused by a previous owner. In the case of an iPhone, it's only a few hundred bucks extra for a brand new current model and not an obsolete one.

I grew up in a time when a one year old PC felt very obsolete, and a 2 year old PC was considered ancient and could no longer play the newest games. To hear that people are paying 50% of the price of a brand new and current unit for a four year outdated unit probably in bad condition beggars belief. Are people just really interested in old hardware, or just too tight to pay that little bit more for much better value?

      Macbook Pro any time too

    • +3

Have got a recent Optiplex and a Latitude. Dell’s quality control for drivers and attention to detail is abysmal. Silly little things like USB dock devices intermittently not working (requiring an unplug and reinsert) and second screen not turning on out of power save mode. Just recently had to completely uninstall all Intel video drivers using a 3rd party app in safe mode just to be able to get the video card to work properly after a recent windows update. Avoid Dell. MacBook is far superior if you want things to just work.

      • I have the 5520 configured as 1080p / i5 7440HQ / 16GB and running Ubuntu Linux (which was actually a configuration option!), and it works great with the TB16 USB-C dock. (It did require firmware updates before everything on the dock worked correctly, but even applying these worked fine under Linux, which quite surprised me.) Also, I saved $$$ by buying it with spinning rust and swapping that for my own SSD. OzB life. ;-)

I actually recommend this laptop to anyone who wants a Linux-based laptop. It's fairly light for its spec, and the tiny bezel makes for a 14"-size laptop with a 15" screen. Even though the thin bezel puts the camera below the screen instead of above it, I still like it. :-)

        • Hmmm, looks like this model can't be configured for Linux…

    • -1

Go for the 13 inch Macbook Pro without touchbar. Battery life is like 9 hours and its quite nice to use.

Or go for the Dell XPS line,Lenovo ThinkPad or Microsoft Surface.

Alternatively, you can buy an Alienware 15 inch with a 1060 graphic card for around 3000$

If none of these sound good, then Razer Blade for this price.

      • MSI Stealth Pro GS63VR 7RG

    • I bought an XPS 15 and found that there was some rattling that comes from the left side of laptop when I play high pitch sounds on high volume. They replaced the speaker but not fixed. So I returned for replacement. A new one arrived with exactly the same problem. Looks like it's the problem with design of the laptop. So I returned for refund this time and bought a cheap but good Asus vivobook F510UA.

Moral of the story is this Dell precision might have the same issue if the same chassis like xps 15.

      • I have the 5520, and haven't noticed anything like that. The speakers aren't super amazing, but they're pretty good.

  • +1

Worth noting that this comes with a 97Whr battery which is a lot bigger than most other laptops.

  • That's a pretty small SSD

    • Ha ha oops. Fixed.

  • Doesn’t seem to have any option to select 1080p? Only the 4K display option available.

    • +1

Hm - seems like if you change processor you can select it on some CPUs. Then it stays selected if you switch.

      • Great find!

    • The 4K screen is miles better, touch screen, covers 100% Adobe RGB gamut v only 72% of sRGB, crystal clear compared to 1080. Had 1080, hated it and return for 4k.

  • +22

If you're happy with a shorter warranty, getting rid of the 3 years on site warranty saves a lot ($484), which means you can get an i5 7440, 16GB RAM, 1080p monitor, 512gb M2 SSD for $1314.90. Absolute bargain.

    • That's a crazy deal. Nice find.

    • +1

Whoa well spotted. Really makes it a steal.

      • You're right - looks like you need an i7 to get the Quadro. And annoyingly the cheaper 7700HQ gives a config error despite being available as a selection. So you're forced into the 7820HQ and a total of $1735.

Still if you can do without the Quadro it's a bargain :-)

        • what would u say is the diff with the quadro? rekon its worth not having

    • I can't see any way to change the display from 4K to 1080p. I only have one option. Same with the Quadro. I have i5 7440HQ as the CPU.

      • +1

Change the CPU to the i5-7440HQ, then back to the i7-7820HQ. 1080p option appears.

    • I can't see how to downgrade the warranty - how do you do it?

EDIT: Ah, it's on the next page.

  • Not a bad deal.

Personally I would just buy a Surface Book 2, I know it's not 15, but still 2700 for a 7th gen with a Nvidia® Quadro M1200M doesn't seem worth it to me. Might be for some.

    Nice find OP.

  • Only 16gb of ram ! that wont be enough for most ozbargainers !!! (sarcasm)

  • My recent dealings with Dell customer support showed they've completely lost it.

  • Worth mentioning that the Quadro M1200M is effectively the same as a GTX 960M, so this particular machine is closer to the iteration of the XPS 15 from two years ago (6th Gen Core + 960M) than the one from last year (7th Gen Core + 1050), just with more configuration options.

    • That's only in the GPU department - the rest of the options are current (7th gen CPU, DDR4 RAM etc.).

  • Why the video card is not 1060?

  • If you want the i7 7820HQ / 16GB / 4K / 512GB M.2 SSD / 1 Year Support, instead of $2314.80, you can try the following:

Once you choose 1 year support, got back to change CPU to i5-7440, and then change to i7 7820 again, you'll notice the price equals to $2218.

    • +1

Because 20th Anniv. Special Edition as Chasis Option will be removed when you do this

      • Aaah - makes sense.

      • Didn’t notice that at all.
        Thanks

      • Do you have pics of 20th anniv versus standard edition?

        • I beleive the primary difference is the colour of the shell?

        • @Gaz1: So if you select the 1 yr warranty like lanriver suggests, you lose the Anniversary cover and get a standard XPS 15 cover? Am I understanding that correctly?

        • +1

@lostn: You can get it with 1 year warranty too. The Anniversary cover seems to be associated with the i7-7820HQ processor, and the 4K screen. If you change them you lose the custom cover and just get a standard XPS 15 style.

You can see it under 'Chassis Options' on the first page.

  • This is the laptop I planned to get, But eventually ended up with Macbook Pro ( Mid 2013 ).

  • Did anyone buy one? Let me know what price you paid.

I'm tempted but trying to resist.

    • 7440HQ has 45w TDP compared to 15w of 8250U. Both have 4 cores, but the latter supports hyperthreading. I'm thinking maybe I should wait for a deal on XPS 13.

If you change the shipping to Seaship, you can save a further $35. So tempting.

It brings it to $1279.70 for 7440HQ, 1 yr wty, FHD screen.

    • Mine arrived today. Descoped to i5 7440 and FHD for 1279. Not the anniversary edition just the standard precision. Certainly not going to complain though. Lovely piece of kit once you remove the bloatware.

      • Did you choose Seaship?

        • Yes. Not sure what the difference is. Other than it saves $35

  • I think Dell might have clued onto this deal and changed the available options (or just out of stock), I can't select the 7440HQ CPU option or decrease the warranty to 1 or 2 years anymore :(

    • Yep, looks like it's done. Wonder if they honoured it for anyone that got an order in.

      • I got an order in for the 7440hq with 1080p display and it has shipped, I went to order another one but couldn’t.

  • It looks like the trick to change to FHD (by changing the CPU & then changing it back) doesn't work any more - anyone found a way to do this now?

  • I'd been in two minds about getting the $1279 deal with 7440HQ but now it looks like the decision has been made for me. You can't get that CPU or downgrade the screen anymore, so I will wait for a good deal on XPS 13 in Rose Gold + White with woven glass keyboard.

I don't fancy the battery life on a 4K screen with HQ processor.

    • I'd been in two minds about getting the $1279 deal with 7440HQ

Should have got one. I wasn't looking when this bargain was first posted but regretting it still since I know I could have had the ideal laptop so cheap. If we didn't get ripped off on the Precision line in AUS it would be that sort of price available all the time.

good deal on XPS 13 in Rose Gold + White with woven glass keyboard.

I'll be looking for a XPS 15 perhaps with i5 but still hoping there will be a similar deal on the Precision again. At least this bargain has shown how to reduce the warranty to get a further discount.

      • I don't think you'll see the ability to downgrade like that again (at least not for that price). To me it looked like an IT mistake that they corrected when they saw hundreds of Precisions being sold for 1.3k. I'm actually certain it was an IT oversight. You can't actually downgrade the screen to FHD, unless you select a different CPU and then go back and then go back again. That looks more like a bug in the system, but they honored it. They didn't know how to fix it without removing the cheaper CPUs altogether.

Yeah I probably would have bought it yesterday had the 'bug' not been fixed. I thought there would be more time to decide. It was good value. I'm just not sure how much I'd be using it.

        • I don't think you'll see the ability to downgrade like that again (at least not for that price).

Agree, not those on sale anyway. The ones not on sale you still can downgrade but they are so overpriced it doesn't make much of a difference.

Yeah I probably would have bought it yesterday had the 'bug' not been fixed. I thought there would be more time to decide. It was good value. I'm just not sure how much I'd be using it.

Might see a few of them on ebay yet. XD

  • Back to normal price now.
