  • Plus rust lol

Is rust usually not covered in the warranty?

    • Nope its not i just read the T&C to be sure.

  • Plus rust

    Brass does not rust.

    • +2

The steel shakle, the steel locking ball bearings etc all does.

      • +1

The shackle is chrome-plated and generally takes many years for rust to set, more than you need to worry about.

My outdoor Lockwood padlocks are over 15 years old and still look and operate like new.

        • What's your point? It's still covered under warranty for rust.

        • @Lorindor:

My point is that rust isn't an issue to worry about.

Brass doesn't rust and chrome takes a long time that it's also a non-issue.

        • +2

There isn't a whole section on corrosion resistance in AS 4145.4 padlocks for nothing. They can and do corrode, especially close to the sea or in more humid areas.

Mind you, if your padlocks are 15 years old +, they were probably made in Huntingdale, not China. Also they were hexavalent plated rather than trivalent plated. (hex produces a lot of toxic byproducts and have been phased out, at least with Lockwood/Assa Abloy)

        • @Scab: Also depends how the lock is treated if you remove the chrome finish it will rust. Its not to hard to scratch of the chrome when rubbing the lock against other metals.

  • -1

+1 for someone still stocking good Australian locks
rather than that hip hip hooray usa made in Mexico cheap master crap

Hint :- give padlock occasional soak of
wd-40 up the barrel for smooth action when using it outside

    • +2

These are not designed by Lockwood or even a sister company under Assa Abloy. These are designed and made by a Chinese manufacturer since about 2010 or so.

Still good locks, but its now a Swedish/Finnish company using an Australian brand selling stuff designed and made in China.

Also, never soak in WD40, its mostly solvent and will strip away the heavy grease inside the padlock. Use something thats more oil than solvent if you want to lube it e.g. Lanox. Only WD40 if its seized.

      • Do you mean inox or lanox? Can't seem to find lanox at bunnings

        • Lanox isn’t on their website but they do stock it (at my two local stores anyway).
          If not, BCF has it.

        • @cala90:
          Ok thanks

      • Ok thanks

        Good tips

  • +1

Every padlock I use outside gets given a coat of lanox every 6 months or so. You’ll never see rust again :)

    • Thats the warranty for "Abloy" branded products, i.e. the stuff from Abloy Oy in Finland specifically the Protec cylinders and padlocks.. They are pretty much separate, from design to production, Assa Abloy Australia only hand its distribution and sales.

    • Apparently these locks are reinforced its stainless on the inside and brass as a coating with a double lock system. But i have some locks i bought from Aldi we can try this on lol.
