Windows 10 Rebrand/Rename

Considering Windows 10 is sorta the final version of Windows and they are just going to continue to support and update it. Do you guys think Microsoft will ever rebrand 'Windows 10' to be just called 'Windows'? What do you think of this idea?

I think if they're going to continue with the operating system as a service rather than the old way of releasing newer editions then I think it'd make more sense to rebrand to just Windows and drop the number.

    • Yeah I agree, it would look heaps nicer too. I guess like how Mac OSX is, yes the x stands for 10 but most of the common public wouldn't really think about it.

Mac OS X is actually just macOS now. So Microsoft could still do an Apple and call Windows 10 just "Windows". Or some futuristic OS called Microsoft Device Operating System short-handed to MS-DOS. Oh wait…

        • Sense of humor, love it, lol. Back to the future, MS-Dos.

        • Maybe with powerful boot options in convenient easy-to-edit files, named, say, autoexec.bat and config.sys? 😊

          Ah, happy memories…

If W10 really is the final version on Windows, and they're going to just update it forever, how will they make money from it? At some point, they're probably going to start charging a subscription fee - that's more or less what they've already done with Microsoft Office (aka Office 365).

Unless the subscription fee for Windows is in the region of $10 a year or less, I don't want that. And they're going to have everyone kind of hooked, since they're unlikely to allow users to cease accepting the continuous updates/upgrades.

It's not free for businesses if they want management tools, etc.
That is how they are monetizing it, not from sales to plebs.

    • Much like apple get money from their hardware not the OS I could see Microsoft doing the same thing. Like Drew22 said too, they could easily just charge Businesses for site licenses and Administration tools.

      • It's not could, they do charge businesses.

Also Microsoft do not do "site" licenses.

    • Old hardware is eventually dropped as they become incompatible with new features and the burden of supporting them is too great. For example, Atom Z2xxx tablets can only go up to 1607, and can't install the 1703 update. They get the 5 years of extended support on 1607 and that's it.

As old hardware is slowly dropped (and this isn't new; it's really not much different from e.g. WinXP or Win7 eventually running out of support) people will buy new devices. For the majority of consumers, this will be with an OEM copy of Windows.

For the few people who buy standalone retail copies and move them around to newer machines, yes, they're not an ongoing source of income. But that's such a small minority I wouldn't be surprised if they just don't care (and not that different from people staying on XP or 7 for 10 years anyway).

And of course the majority of their income is probably from business users on Software Assurance (which is a subscription service).

    • I'm pretty sure windows licensing is the smallest portion of Microsoft's income (Office being the biggest). I think they also hold patents that Android uses, so they make money from Android too.

    • Have you seen all the advertising in the start menu,
      Paid suggestions and 'news' articles.

I'm sure it is not there out of the generosity to spread the word

    • Business is obvious, but more consumer orientated answers:
OEM licenses that are tied to a single motherboard, even full licenses have a hardware change limit.
      OEM licenses for new laptops
Money from pushing users into their ecosystem, W10 is pretty aggressive towards using a Microsoft account, OneDrive, their app store, O365 etc.
      Data mining and telemetry.

I wonder if they are avoiding it due to something similar to the Windows 9 issue:
    https://www.extremetech.com/computing/191279-why-is-it-calle…

It will probably end up being WindowsX or something like that to avoid similar issues.

    Also hey mate :)

      Hey Maaaate :) <3

    • And in response to what you said, they could easily still refer to it as Windows 10 or WindowsX under the hood but commercially refer to it as just Windows. Interesting thought though. Whatever they do I don't think it'll be for a few more years.

  • I think they're cheating themselves out of good money. Everyone knows 11 is higher than 10, and by extension, better. Think about it - what would you rather be running. Windows 10 or Windows 11? It sells itself.

    • Windows 11 - Spinal Tap edition.

Because when you close a window, a door opens… Or blue screen…

I think 'Microsoft OS' is better. Need to drop the Windows legacy…

WinOS has a certain ring to it don’t you think? Maybe slightly derivative of macOS, or even a little corny, but still not too bad in my thinking.

  • If I was in the MS boardroom discussing this topic I would suggest X-Windows, because everything is better with an X in front of it.
