Housemates Causing Packet Loss, Alternative Internet Options?

Basically, we are on the cheapest NBN plan so our upload speed is terrible and someone's phone/ipad frequently maxes out the upload bandwith and causes packet loss. We cant change the plan as its in the landlord's name and the agent wont pass on the request to the landlord for us to upgrade to a better plan.

Im pretty sure we cant get a 2nd NBN connection at the premises right?

Unfortunately the router is the iiNet supplied NBN modem/router which does not allow traffic control rules to be set in the router screen. If I wanted to do that, I would need to buy a router at my own expense and im not sure how expensive that would be in order to get a model that would let me set traffic control rules (limit upload usage basically).

Any ideas on the cost of that?

Another option would be to get my own mobile broadband, but thats very expensive, especially without a contract…and the optus network reception in the house is terrible, so I don't know if mobile broadband would get affected as well.

Any suggestions?

The NBN is in the landlords name? That’s an unusual arrangement if they don’t live with you.

Most likely student / share accommodation. 4-5 people sharing house and paying by room.

  • NBN termination device supports up to 4 RSP connections. Each provider will provision the service and assign it to a specific UNI-D port.

I was in fact, able to have two different services running (Skymesh and Telecube) for about a month.

It is of course, preferable to simply speak to your landlord about upgrading to a faster internet plan. Tier 2 (25mbps) NBN isn't that much more expensive compared to Tier 1.

This assumes they have FTTP which is far from guaranteed.

    • yeah nah…. Only FTTP or Fixed wireless supports 4 RSP… Under NBN 1.0, 4 RSP was the standard and then craphead came along with nbn 2.0, for sooner, faster better, cheaper, crappier and FTTN/FTTC/HFC all only supply 1 RSP.

    • Its FTTN unfortunately.

Why get a second NBN modem, just get a decent router with traffic rules, plug that into the NBN modem, disable WiFi on the NBN modem, and make everyone connect to the good router.

    • Yes but im asking how much that decent router will cost, that will allow me to set traffic rules?

      • I bought my Archer C9 for $100, and I'm pretty sure it allowed me too. Can't check, I don't use it any more.

what nbn technology are you on? how old is the house?

    • FTTN, not sure how old the apartment is.

Does your housemate deliver parcel for Auspost?

Just go and restart the modem every time you feel slow, and you will know who's uploading.

    • I know who is doing it but they wont stop it because they refuse to believe that its their device that is causing it.

  • Who is paying for the service.

    • The landlord is.

Can you explain this ? It doesn’t make sense. If you are in a share house with the landlord , offer to pay more for the internet. What’s the agents reason for not helping ?

If the land lord doesn’t live there, advise that they need to cancel their current service so you can sign up to something that meets your needs.

If you and your housemates are footing the bill there is no reason not for them not to oblige.

Having internet in the landlords name is easier as people move in and out all the time. Each person might be under a different contract.

      • In that case just offer to pay extra to increase the download speed. Maybe look at uniti wireless if you want to get your own.

        • Yea but from what ive seen, those mobile broadband plans are pretty expensive…

        • @Question: uniti are Satelite not mobile.

    • The agent refuses to pass on the request to the landlord for us to upgrade to a higher tier plan. Probably because she cannot be bothered to do so. We have no way to contact the landlord and he barely speaks english (he came to do repairs before, I tried to talk to him about the internet and he just didnt understand what i was talking about and kept saying he wanted to leave everything to the agent).

      • Keep asking the agent. Call the agency and escalate to the manager. She needs to do her job. If the land lord doesn’t speak English then he might not understand a email about this from the agent.

        • Shes the head of the agency…

        • @Question: Tell her to go f her self in that case

Maybe you could ask them to replace the packets they lost.

Are you FTTP? If so, yes. If no, No.

  • Merged from What is the cheapest NBN capable router that will let me set simple traffic rules?

What is the cheapest NBN capable wifi router that will let me set simple traffic rules to stop one person from hogging bandwith?

    • This is what happens when my thread gets merged : nobody replies.
