Bunnings UK The End Is Near

Bunnings UK has failed.
'The takeover has been so bad that Bunnings’ parent company Wesfarmers is considering pulling out of the UK. Wesfarmers managing director Rob Scott admitted that the management team made big mistakes, including sacking the entire Homebase senior management.'

Can it recover? Will we see price hikes in Australia to offset losses in the UK? Will there be a Masters inspired fire sale in the UK?

Share prices don’t look too bad but I don’t have a high-yield amg a200 so not a subject matter expert. https://www.google.com/search?q=ASX:WES

Clearly the Brits can't appreciate a good sausage sizzle.

      Uncultured savages.

      • If we replaced the caramelised onions with mashed pea and the coke with hot bovril we may have had more of a chance.

You can save a lot of money by “pulling out”
    True story.

    • But only if you pull out in time.

In cases like this its preferable to have some sort of protection to ward off any financial consequences.

      • …and the old joke:

But only if you pull out in time.

Q: What do we call those who don't?
        A: Dad!

The "senior executives" always sack everyone else but themselves. Im sure in some form they are also responsible for the failure.

Some of them seem to award themselves huge bonuses when they (profanity) up and then somehow it's cool to have them on other boards after that.

Shareholder value = buying Garry a yacht to go with the AMG.

The problem with Bunnings in the UK is that no one knows what it is. They don't advertise like they do here, they basically just converted a few B&Ms. It was a half assed attempt.

    • Yep, it was a Bunnxit alright

Maybe they were emulating Masters, to see if they could make its half-arsed strategy, so expertly prosecuted against them here in Oz, work (without acquiring any of the investment, key brands or operations as they exist in the UK market). They know without any doubt, after all, that everything they touch turns to gold in the same way Bunnings did (which was not Wesfarmers' idea, they bought it out and expanded it, by capitalising at the right time on the low value of BBC Hardware and HardwareHouse (which they acquired 100% of) in order to reach market dominance.

Spectacular that they failed so abysmally, so quickly after Woolies dumped a decade of profits on when they admitted utter defeat and crap-canned Masters.

Occasionally I have the unfortunate plight of having to watch commercial UK television and basically all they advertise there is gambling. It's insane: GAMBLE, GAMBLE, GAMBLE every 15 minutes.

      God I hate advertising.

This is a long game in my opinion. They literally need to run it in every facet the same way they do here in OZ.

Either that or people in the UK just aren't all that into renovating themselves or going to hardware stores etc… is the economy there bad perhaps?

  • Wouldn't be the first aussie company to get into trouble with a UK expansion.

"Will we see price hikes in Australia to offset losses in the UK? "

No. If raising prices would increase profits, they would do it regardless of what's happening in the UK.
