64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Corsair Voyager Gtr Refurb $72 AUD

91

Just bought this drive. Its a HK based store and I found it by accident. There are only 18 left at this time. Beware as its a refurb and they only warranty it for 30 days. Still, shipping was about 10 bucks to Au, and I really needed a 64 GB drive at a reasonable price.

I found some other discussions of this site.

I don't get how a USB flash drive can be "refurbished".

    Been used and repaired again?

    • Well indeed…."reformatted and wiped over with a cloth"…. I suspect is all the refurbishing that can be done.

That said, it is less than half the price you would pay locally, and it is a very fast drive.

  • +1

It's hard to trust a company that hides it's domain registration details in the whois.

I too wonder what refurbished means.

And with only a 30 day warranty, plus additional shipping costs…

It's a gamble, so I won't vote positive. But I can see why people would risk it, it's a good price.

    • how do you lookup domain rego?
      what link?

      • +1

        Just google whois.

Plenty of places provide the look up.

        They're using these dummy details:

        Whois Privacy Protection Service, Inc.
        Whois Agent
        PMB 368, 14150 NE 20th St - F1

  • sound like fishy deal from HK, have you try to put 64gb file onto it and see if there is any error?

  • I'll take the risk, and have paid $551HKD (approx $70 AUD, more if you use paypal's own conversion fee) with insurance, just in case…

  • I wouldn't buy a refurbished flash drive with only 30 day warranty. Price for a 64GB is very good though.

Corsair offers 10 year warranty on these drives if bought new.

    • True. Once I receive it I'll constantly push the USB to make sure it's up to scratch, otherwise I'll send it back before the 30 days are up.

      • +3

Good luck getting your money back from a dodgy hk company if it is faulty.

  • Sounds dodgy to me but I'm interested in hearing trinz findings. I'd like to be proven wrong on this.

  • +4

These are fake.. Corsair has always maintained it doea not sell refurbished drives..

  • +1

Seriously not worth the risk, as best it's a clone at worst a repackaged 8gb with the controller rewritten to show 64gig

  • +1

whoever takes the risk and buys this please report back when u receive them if they are really 64gb

  • Beware: refer to thread -> http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/fakeusb

    • I doubt they would sell fake usb and call it refurbished, if the drive does fail after the warranty has expired you could always buy a brand new one and use that receipt for warranty purposes.

Corsair seem to have a lot of refurbished drives for resale

  • Buying with paypal and using your credit card makes any transaction safer. Also, H2testw is an easy way to test a USB drive. I bought one and will update this thread when it comes in. For me, the price was right, and the risk worth taking.

so if it a FAKE drive, and you would like to claim from Paypal,
you would have to take time writing & provide prove to Paypal, wait for Paypal to get approval!

then you would have to pack it again and write/print the address,
go to Post Office, line in the que, send it Registered Post back to HK(expensive international postage)!!
this would cost alone about AUD$25.00 and ofcourse this is non-refundable!

after you sent it, you notify Paypal your Registered Post number tacking,
and wait for a reasonable amount of time for HK company to receive it,
if they claim they didn't receive, you would again have to provide prove/evidence to Paypal…..

      • All of the above is true. It happened to me ablout 6 months ago with 32GB microSD cards from HK. My tip is to only buy locally or at least in Australia, so at least you can send back registered post cheaply.

        • +2

My tip is don't purchase something 'extremely' cheaply from HK/China and think that it's going to be legitimate. I'll continue to do most of my shopping in the US and UK because we get reamed on most things locally. I avoid Australian stores at all costs because their prices are laughable most of the time.

        • @jimbler
Even Australian sellers sell fakes, I had a fake 2gb sony mem duo stick sent to me by some chinese guy from melbourne.
I tend to buy anything electronic that is easily faked either from the US or UK.
UK you have the poms, and it seems its harder to get fakes into there (try to get verification if you can from the original company, i.e. email sennheiser UK for confirmation about mymemory.co.uk being an authorised sennheiser dealer), and the americans have guns… I don't think anyone will try selling fake goods to people with guns.

$25 for posting a usb stick? Get real.

        • +3

ok, that's an estimate of 750g (including original packaging and/or stuff)
maybe it's 250g-500g, still $18.80..around $20 to post A usb stick back to HK.

          so…get real!? www.auspost.com

        • +1

Paypal insist you use Registered post, so depending on weight and size of the item, $25 is a rough guide. Cost me near on $20 to post back a MicroSD card on it's own (no packaging at all).

        • -1

(Many years ago as an ebay newbie I 'bought now' a usb stick for $16 - for a few dollars less than in the shops. But then I realised the merchant was in HK and they tried to charge me $24 postage. I declined to pay, immediately messaged ebay and paypal the reason, as I did several times later, never got a reply… even tried to speak to someone there … and ultimately they barred my account!! I'm still furious about it.)

  • I like the conversion rate that they list. The USD price is 27c higher than the AUD price :)

  • For anyone buying this, be sure to write 64Gb of data onto it to verify it can actually store that amount of data. It's not uncommon for very large and cheap flash drives originating in China/HK to be fake, with 64Gb written on the stick, maybe 8 or 16Gb of actual flash RAM, and modified firmware to advertise 64Gb to the system. Attempting to write past the point of real memory corrupts all the data.

The scammers rely on the victim not writing a lot of data to the stick, at least until the warranty period is over. Buyer beware.

    • Yep, sounds like both trinz and zcream know how to test it so hopefully they'll be able to present positive results!

  • +1
    • They technically don't sell them directly but they've provided them to others in the past (however not for resale):

      http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=78803#10

"Well it turns out that we did sell some of these refurbished drives to one of the distributes but they were not for resale they were going to bundle them with other products. But not sell them as a resale item is my understanding."

I'm now feeling these are counterfeit however hoping they're not for those who have taken the risk. The following post details a user's reasoning for their received stick to be counterfeit - a good guide for those testing:

remember to test it fake with H2Test

  • lol NM , its not Aus dollar.

For the mods, can you add this to the fake usb key wiki ?
    http://agnipulse.com/2010/04/how-i-fixed-a-fake-64gb-usb-dri…

If you do get a fake flash device and cannot return it, its a way to reflash the information sector indicate the correct capacity and actually use it in that capacity.

    This smells so fake.
Deals Direct had a standard Corsair 64GB for sale almost 2 years ago.
It was $99.95 and it turned out to be fake.

    For a good read":
    http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?s=5070d41ff4cd696…

  • there is also a refurbished Corsair 32GB version listed for sale at around $32. Might be cheaper to buy that one and see if they're genuine.

  • 90% sure its fake. but if you buy it, let us know, would be interested to know if i'm right or wrong so i can adjust my sixth sense

  • sounds dodgy .. private registration web? what are they trying to hide?

  • +1

try using h2testw to determine if it's really the capacity they say it is.

I'm over buying flash based products from overseas as every one of them has been fake.

  • Just letting you guys know that I've received the shipping notification.

  • Received shipping notification too.

  • Thx for the bargain. I have done my order and will test it when I receive it.

  • Capacity might actually be 64gb, I bought a Kingston 8Gb from a prominent Australian online store, it passed every test but performance was slowwww on investigation I found it was a clone product.

  • For what its worth I got the foll. reply from Linke
    :-

    • Guess we'll see if they keep to their word.

  • I got the USB…

How to test? What is H2Test???

  • Look at the wiki. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/fakeusb

Just download h2testw - select the usb drive in its menu and post what the software lists.

    • +1

      Thanks…

      Here is my test result:

      Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
      Writing speed: 23.5 MByte/s
      Reading speed: 28.4 MByte/s
      H2testw v1.4

      Good?

      • good speeds

can u actually copy 64gb worth of files on it?

        • Windows Explorer Properties:

          Used Space: 66.3mb (69,554,176 bytes)
          Free Space: 60.3gb (64,824,684,544 bytes)

          Capacity: 60.4gb (64,894,238,720 bytes)

Formatted with HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
          File System: NTFS

        • Pretty sure that H2test fills up the USB to verify its capacity.

        • awesome deal then.. pity it's no longer available ><

        • Just ran H2testW on mine and get numbers more or less identical to Jacku, seems to be the real thing.

  • Nice. Still waiting for mine to be delivered. Is yours in a good condition?

    • Like brand new. So is the package. Very well packages like new. Just got a "Refurb" sticker. That's it :) Good deal so far :)

      • Sweet. I don't know if you might want to run a few more tests to confirm, like Crownie said to fill it up to capacity, and copy it back out again to make sure there's no corruption in the files?

  • Well, I ordered on blind faith / stupidity within the first hour of the post, with plenty of stock still shown. After it hadn't shipped for a few days, I dropped them an email. Out of stock and wouldn't know when getting more in.

Refunded me OK, but very much disappointed by getting in early on the deal only to be bypassed somehow in the order queue. Not a big deal in the big scheme of things, but 64Gb high speed at that price would have been oh so nice.

    • Looks like they have a dozen units in stock now for the same price! Also, the 32GB is also available but not as good value as the 64GB IMO.

      • awesome! i ordered one.. will refund my slow-as uncollected back-ordered 2x Lexar 16GB for $19 from HN :)

  • Confirming that I've received mine today, and I've run HWTest:

    Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
    Writing speed: 27.5 MByte/s
    Reading speed: 32.2 MByte/s
    H2testw v1.4

    This is via FAT32

  • Back in stock but price is not cheapish- a little over $100 + shipping :(\

They do however have cheap and instock Sandy Bridge 2600K CPU's @ $350 delivered (with insurance):
