  • Maggi???

    • +11

yeah, Maggi is like Neil Perry showing Asians how to cook Asian food….. looks and taste horrible, but good marketing.

      • +3

bit racist to suggest you need to be x ethnicity in order to cook good food of x ethnicity?

edit- before some people get overly triggered, here is a great example, see Rene Redzepi

        • +2

on a probability wise, i think generalisation does hold true though whether you think its unfair or not.

i would be comfortable to say that i think my chance of success would be higher if i had japanese food made by japanese people compared to japanese food made by a korean. this does not mean that i cant get good japanese food from the latter and this definitely doesn't mean that everyone of japanese descent can make good japanese food.

we make generalisations everyday, do i go for Black&Gold or Betty Crocker. a random Watch Brand Co or a Seiko

          @alebox:

          we make generalisations everyday

The comment above isn't a generalisation though.

  • +5

How is this compared to indomee?

    • +40

yeah it's gonna be a no from me dawg

    • +1

Just as good I reakon, but I'm not very picky when it comes to food

    • Won't compare 4 sure

    • +5

Nothing compares to Indomee. Super Mi comes close though.

The main difference you get is that the sugar content is either too high or too low. In this case I think it's a little off to the point that the sweetness almost tastes like an artificial sweetener.

    • I prefer store brand Mi Goreng to these, put it that way. The store brand doesn't come in Hot & Spicy but it's more edible IMO. At $0.75 more I'd just get the Indomie Hot & Spicy 5pk.

    • It’s totally different

  • +4

    taste horrible, needs extra MSG

    • +1

MSG is pretty cheap at Asian/Indian grocery stores. Add it instead of salt to your meals for some healthy goodness. 😀

      • not sure what all the fuss about MSG is about? a billion Chinese cannot be wrong or 3 billion Asians for that matter.

        • +3

Maligned food ingredients go through trends same with gluten or fat or salt etc

        • +1

Different races can handle, or not, different ingredients well - dairy products are a good example.

        • +2

@jazoom: the power of fear is a great marketing tool.. as soon as one guy/girl crys "witch" the crowds gather for a witch hunt. human nature never changes.

        • +7

@chrism238: dont think its got anything to do with race, its more peoples perceptions. the ones that "cannot" handle MSG dont realise MSG is in everything they eat. Placebo effect in reverse.

Its actually in EVERYTHING except water because MSG occurs naturally in foods. So the only way to avoid MSG is stop eating.

        • @tonsta: damn the fruit and raw vegs I eat everyday contains MSG?

        • @wtfnodeal: heaps

        • +2

          @tonsta:
Maybe not strictly due to race, but certainly due to culture:
          http://kore.am/why-most-east-asians-are-lactose-intolerant/

        • +1

@wtfnodeal: Tomatoes, mushrooms and seaweed all have enormous amounts of MSG.

        • @chrism238: Asians are very prone biologically to being lactose intolerant. Many asians also have issues metabolising alcohol. These things are genetic.

I'd say there's about as much likelihood of a culture being intolerant of MSG as they are to be intolerant of NaCl (table salt).

        • @wtfnodeal: a 100g tomato has more glutamates than 1.5kg of beef.

different variations of mirepoix (mix of fruits & veggies with high glutamates) were popular all over the world a long time before they figured out that glutamates were responsible for deliciousness.

    • I wouldn't say that it tastes horrible but I usually add in sambal chilli to add extra flavour. And break off some parts of the uncooked noodles and sprinkle it on it as per Jake Peralta (Brooklyn Nine Nine).

  • +1

    Personally I find this fine.

I would say if Indomee is a 10/10, then this is probably a 9/10? Although it's been a couple of years since I last had this..

When making mee goreng I usually mix one of these and 2-3 Samyang. It's quite good!

    • +1

Hahahaa, out of context but love your profile pic and username.

    • +3

Interesting. Does your cooking method also involve yellow tape?

      • +1

No, but he does keep sugar in his pocket, as a plan B.

      Flavour Enhancers (621, 635)

621 is MSG for those that are allergic.

  • The Suimin Migoreng cup noodles is actually not too bad either. I haven't tried these though. Actually, don't think I've ever had Maggi noodles.

  • +2

    It's all flavours OP

    Few examples:
    Soy and mild spice
    Chicken
    Beef

    • Thanks, will update

    • Thanks - I only buy oriental , and it’s never on sale in store

  • coles and woolies have the home brand versions of this for $1.49-$1.50.

larger size (425g) and no "added" MSG (but still full of soy sauce, yeast extract and 635 inosinate/guanylate, so don't worry, you'll still get plenty of glutamates and umami)

  • MMMmmmmmmmm M.S.G.

  • is this the Malaysia one? you guys must try the OG maggi kari from Malaysia, much better than this one

    http://www.wosco.com.my/images/rice-and-noodle/noodle-pasta/…

  • The 5-pack at Aldi are still cheaper and probably very similar.

  • I agree Maggi Chicken and Beef flavour taste really bad, but I actually like Fusion Mi Goleng more than Indo me.

  • Yummy noodleeeels these ones
Less spicier thant the Asian Mee Goreng variety
