I've got a few of these, and the HS110s from previous deals. My one complaint is that they're bulky and block the other socket on a double power point or power board.
The xiaomi's are compact and cheaper, but need a hub. Has anyone found a smaller reliable wifi option? I've been considering at sonoff etc, but not sure how the quality compared to these tp-links.

I would personally not be using Xiaomi devices in Australia connected to GPO. On the off chance that device is what causes a fire, it's most likely not rated to Australian standards. Of course the chance of this happening is very small but it's still there.

    • I have both and they both eat into the second socket. The sonoff s20 is only slightly smaller in diameter. I use alexa to control both and other than different setup apps it doesnt make too much difference in controlling devices. I find the wifi better on the tplink than sonoff in terms of signal stability and strength.

      • Thanks @pw. I find the tp-links much more stable than xiaomi. It's good to know that the sonoff probably sits somewhere in between.

    • the problem with the xiaomi ones is (at least for me) they only work in the china mainland server, then it's all in chinese (the schedule part - I can still turn on anf off)!

I like xiaomi products but now I have one of those wifi cameras that doesnt work because its a chinese version and that pisses me off.

Great deal, good find. I assume you are actually Nick Xenophon and now have lots of extra time on your hands to search for bargains?

  • I love the idea of making my house smart. Have done the aircons with Sensibo, The TV setup is smart and will do lights soon. What do you guys plug into these?

Floor standing lamp, bedside table lamp, ultrsonic humififier, wifi router.

      • wifi router? … the only thing I could think of is "alexa switch pron off" :p

        • +2

quick way to reset the router from another room

        • @huu: isn't it power off and then no WiFi to tell it to power back on

        • @asa79: Yep, found that out the first time i use it. Solution: Off 10:00pm On 10:01pm it doesn't need wifi for schedule to work

        • @huu: Tho you can save your money by using the restart schedule in your router. Most have the ability to restart on a schedule

        • @asa79: you totally miss the point. Your original question is "isn't it power off and then no WiFi to tell it to power back on" and my answer is just tell the switch to switch itself off and back on a minute latter. It is same as running down stairs pull power out wait 60s plug power back in. How many time this year do you need to do that to your modem, if you dont then you probably dont need it, as me thanks to the horrible copper adsl line in my area i need to do that every now and then. NBN probably delay until 2019 here. And yes my modem/router do have schedule restart but sometimes a soft restart wont solve adsl modem problem and a full power down cycle is warranted.

        • @huu: personally I restart it via the Web gui of the router, or disconnect and reconnect the wan connection.

Since I replaced my router WiFi with an unifi ac.i haven't restarted in a while

I have a Mi zigabee attached to my server rack including router ups in between tho. So turn off doesn't take anything down, I only use it for power usage monitoring

    • Bedside lamps (ie: non lifx bulbs etc), christmas tree lights, bug zapper outside, outdoor string lights - work well with google home / alexa

    • Coffee machine (for preheating)
Rice cooker (it is a dumb rice cooker, so it needs setting up in advance, then turning on to start cooking)
Lamp for a timer (when on holidays)
Computer (older IBM server) to switch it off completely, since it idles quite noisily.

    • Car battery charger (set on 1hr after sunrise and 1hr before sunset for solar)
Gym TV and treadmill (grouped two switches together in app)
Baby monitor camera (if we forget to turn it on)

  • Try TP-Link HS200 wall switches for switching your main room lights.

    • Nice product but not available in Australia unfortunately.

      • Available though, I have some.

        • So not local stock with no warranty and probably not certified for use in AU?

  • How about 3 for $97.79 or $32.60/ea delivered vs (above) 2 for $69.61 or $34.80/ea using same code. I don't think they've ever been cheaper. About $60ea at HN.

  • These or HS110 to go with Home Assistant?

    • Energy monitoring or no monitoring

      • with energy monitoring… mostly so I can turn off things like the TV and bedside table lamps when my wife leaves them on when she goes out

        • Lamp might be cheaper with a smart bulb

        • @asa79:

          Any recommendations on smartbulbs?

I'm new to the automation scene, so learning the ropes

        • +1

@unrealshots: Yeelights (Cheap and Wifi), Hue (Expensive and more compatible)

  • How does the energy monitoring compare to Mi zigabee plug?

  • Can two of these smart switches go on a double wall outlet next to each other or can one smart switch give enough space to allow the second outlet to be used?

    • +1

Probably not unless you've got wide spaced sockets.

These are the physical dimensions of these plugs according to TP-Link: 100.3 x 66.3 x 77 mm

    • They say a picture says a thousand words…

      • it does..if the link worked

        • I tested the link and it was working when I posted. They must've disabled hotlinking afterwards.

Here you go Lps. Just for you…
