Apart from the RAM this thing is better than my tower PC….which is about 7-8 years old.

    • a mobile CPU will always be slower then a tower CPU of the same type and generation (just look at the thermal ratings), but compared to a 7-8 year old tower it will be better, has SSSD for boot drive and 1Tn for storage.

I have a Lenovo i7 laptop for my mobile devices (6th gen tower for when at base) and they are impressive for the $$$$$.

      • Yeah looking at downsizing everything to move into a Unit. Computer with two 24" monitors takes up a bit of space.

      • GTX 1050 is a proper desktop GPU

  • +2

    over 1k + gst/import duty?

    • +1

Nah as long as the item itself is under $1000 - B&H's website already picks up and makes you pay if the item goes over $1000

      • if I buy 3 will I have 2 pay GST ?

        • +1

Absolutely - but not if you buy 3 in seperate transactions ;)

        • +4

actually if all the items are shipped around the same time frame, customs will catch on and combine the total amount and tax accordingly.

        • +2

          @jackthefrost:

And if they do catch on, you will be paying GST (10%) + custom duty (5%) on all 3 laptops, not just the 2 over the GST-free threshold.

          Don't do it!

        • @sschen:

How about same address, different recipients, Will that get away?

        • +1

          @jackthefrost:

I think you have too much faith in the capabilities of Customs to pick this stuff up.

    • +20

I thought this was ozbargain not ozripoff. A $4000 macbook without USB-A ports is still slower than the plastic toy?

    • +12

Many Apple products utilize components made in China and are also often assembled in China too.

Then you can look at some reviews on the Lenovo 15.6" Legion Y520 Gaming Laptop for $1024:
      Laptop Mag
      PCWorld
      TechRadar

Then you can make a comparison against the Apple MacBook Pro (2017) for $2699:
      GizModo
      Macworld
      PcMag

      Some differences:
      - $1675
      - Lenovo Legion Y520 uses Windows 10
      - MacBook Pro uses macOS 10.13
      - Lenovo Legion Y520 is a budget gaming notebook that can be used for professional work too
      - MacBook Pro is a professional notebook that is not useful for gaming
      - Lenovo Legion Y520 uses a plastic body
      - MacBook Pro body uses aluminum body
      - Lenovo Legion Y520 uses a Full HD IPS Screen
      - MacBook Pro uses a high quality high resolution screen of 2880 x 1800

    • +2

You're paying about 3.5k to get similar GPU performance in your Mac.

    • +2

Because $1000 mac runs like a plastic toy compared to this.

Also what is this 2009? Dell is all the rage now.

    • Surely a failed attempt at a joke ?! Hahahaha

    • Ha ha. Easy; you can do lots of things on a Windows machine and you can't do much at all on a pretty Apple machine.
Gamers don't waste money on Apple.

    • You can do whatever you wanted to.
No one cares what you are.

  • if its with GTX 1060….

    • -1

      Would of been $1500+.

Have a similar spec lenovo thinkpad s5/e570p they intend to warm up a bit though but for the price of this one sure is a bargain.

      • +11

Would have = would've, not would of.

        Pet peeve.

        • +7

Keep seeing this shit everywhere. Annoys me too.

        • -1

          @Blitzfx:
I agree. Don't they teach English in schools anymore?

If I'd said "would of" in class in the 80s, the nuns would have slapped me across the mouth with a ruler.

        • +2

          @marlor: They weren't nuns… and it wasn't a ruler.

        • @Gravy:
they either dead or in jail now.

        • -1

Sure it's annoying, but picking apart other people's grammar on a public forum? Classy, not pretentious at all. :)

        • +2

@psdillon: I'm happy to apologise to stussy if they felt offended or belittled by what I said/the medium it was said on.

I could have sent them a PM, but would that really have been any better..?

I could have also said nothing, but then they're likely to make the same mistake again (which is annoying as you've said). At least doing so on a public forum means others who make the same mistake see it too.

Here's a passive aggressive smiley for you too. :)

        • @fattymattyd: I read an interesting quote this morning which is based on a bible proverb I think. "Do Not Correct a fool, he will hate you. Correct a wise man he will appreciate you".

That being said, there is a time and a place for everything.

I'm doing a course at the moment and during one recent lesson I picked up on two statements by the tutor that I knew were incorrect (one possibly due to outdated knowledge on the tutor's behalf, the other just misinformed I think). I never mentioned it to them as wasn't sure how to approach them about it without looking like a dick, but now there is a class of students out there that are misinformed.

Battery life - up to 4 hours.. which I'm guessing is closer to 2 like my Dell inspiron

We'll get good affordable gaming laptops one day.

    • +3

Good affordable gaming laptops are just gaming desktops with terrible portability & non existent battery life

      • I get 7+ hours out of my Dell Inspiron 5000, and it has the same specs as this laptop. Could probably get 9+ if I wasn't using wireless. Turn the dedicated gpu, turn on low power mode and away you go.

Obviously no idea how this Lenovo goes but you can get good battery life out of some gaming laptops :)

        • Well it's no longer a gaming laptop in low power mode.

        • @iLoveYourFace: Kinda true. But you insinuated that the battery life claim was false when it probably isn't. You're right in that a battery that can support high res gaming for a long time doesn't exist, but if you are using it for stuff other than gaming it's more than adequate.

        • @Nadder:

Eh, 45W/hr is a tiny battery. It's about as small as it gets for a 15.6" laptop.

I've got the Pavilion Power 15, a competitor to this laptop with very similar specs, and it has a 75W/hr battery. I can get 7 hours with the lightest use. It's as thin and weighs less than this Lenovo too.

I think he was right to insinuate about your battery life claim though as the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 with abysmal 40W/hr battery (the smallest in any 15.6" laptop) is known for having really bad battery life even with the low end configurations with low wattage chips. It would be a genuine miracle that you get 7 hours of actual use out of such a tiny battery considering the laws of thermodynamics and all.

        • @c0balt: my Inspiron has a 74wHr battery… I mistyped the model it's an Inspiron 15 7000. Phones + fat fingers…

  • +2

Given this is a gaming laptop you might want to put the GPU in the title…

Wow, that's a really good deal, good find OP! I think things from the US only take a week or so to arrive.

  • Does this have global warranty?

    • +1

Possibly, would have to research more though or maybe someone has more info https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/pd004172

    • +1

I have the Lenovo Y50 and Y520, both purchased from the US and I think there's a year's worth of global warranty (fortunately never had a problem with them in the first year) but once it runs out, there's virtually no support. I called Lenovo Australia to ask for the model number of a chasis screw because one had gone missing and after 3-4 tries of speaking to tech support, the first thing they said was my Y50 (They had just started selling the Y50 in Australia at that point) was purchased in the States hence we are not able to help with your question. Pretty shocking. Otherwise, I am very happy with both laptops as they provide reasonable specs for a relatively lower price.

      • +1

In my experience with Lenovo products (when I tried to use the warranty a Yoga 710 which I purchased around a year ago), I was told the "global warranty" excludes Australia and New Zealand. Might be a different now though.

        • Haha..that must be a world first! Good to know we aren't part of the global community.

Anyone know if the power supply from the brick to the wall is a seperate piece? - so easy to swap out for an aussie plug??

Compared to Lenovo au site, this thing is essentially half price.

    • +1

My lenevo has a 3 pin separate to the power supply sure it will be the same.

      • +1

Cheers mate, yep. 3 pin separate so easy to swap to Aussie plug. So tempted………..

  • keep forgetting how good Lenovo is.

Just bought the s3 tablet, maybe should have considered upgrading laptop instead

Though really need 16gb ram for high end.

Even though you rarely use more than 50%, spikes are very noticeable

    • its upgradeable to 32GB according to the specs when looking at this model on the Lenovo Aus. website….

  • -1

This or the GPD WIN 2? This can play Witcher 3 but GPD can't however i have my desktop for that… OR wait for Hades Canyon the amazing Intel/AMD hybrid

    • Be prepared to pay a premium for that. A laptop with the Intel x Vega chip may still be worth more than 1200 AUD.

      • -1

True .. it may end up being the same price as a laptop with a gtx 1060 but with slightly better battery life…

  • Can anyone please shed some light on how the below metabox compares to this? It is around $150 more but you get 2 year local warranty.

    https://www.metabox.com.au/store/b218/Metabox-Alpha-N850HJ-L…

    • +1

The 1050Ti is about 30% faster than the 1050 iirc. If you want to play games I would not go for less than the 1050Ti.

    • To add to what littleannie said, you also need to select and install your own OS on the Metabox one, adding to the cost.

      • +1

at least it is an option for metabox which i would choose any time of the day. there are other avenues to obtaining a license LEGITLY 9(for instance if you have an edu email address)

not to mention Lenovo and HP are the worst offenders in imposing whitelists on their bios - in short any upgrade would need to be an lenovo or hp approved one (e.g. my intel 7260 wifi card was faulty, i bought one from ebay vs directly via Lenovo for a fraction of the cost) - does not work!

Thought the card was faulty so i tested with DELL which does not have any whitelists and it worked 100%.

the whitelist is a huge turn-off and don't expect Lenovo's help line to be as good given you are buying a consumer laptop vs their business grade lhelp line which is still meh…

i own a metabox and they are actually a rebranded Clevo which one can say are the only manufacturer which only produces a pure modular like build-your-own PC type but for laptops. They're based in Taiwan hence my guess was support/warranty would be an issue thus the rebadging like how hungry jacks are burger kings in Australia.

the newer variants even employ desktop cpu processors (since 5th gen mobile processors were l BGA (soldered))to continue their culture of ensuring modularity.

this of course comes at the cost of portablity so does every true gaming laptop.

        • Thanks for all this info. Didnt know about the whitelist. That is crazy.

    • +2

      https://www.metabox.com.au/store/b219/Metabox-Alpha-N850HK-L…

get this instead mate for the following reasons

      • 2 yrs warranty vs a technically valid 1 year must return to US lenovo depot
      • actual gst tax invoice which would be useful to claim via TRS - not a definite saving but at least a real option

      • 512gb Plextor ssd nvme drive vs 256 again i'm going to disregard any hdd

-given the power requirements for the yoga is 150w and this is shipped from the US, do we need a transformer? if so thats another $$$ along with another brick to carry around.

However the 1st 3 points is enough imo to go for the Clevo. Oh yeah and opening the chassis for upgrades are easy

google Lenovo's ram slot location and you'll know what i mean

      • Thannks mate. I am a little new to the gaming laptop scene so wasnt too sure. Appreciate all the help.

      • Thanks for the recommendation!

Noob question, if I connect this laptop to a 120 Hz monitor, will it display a 120 Hz video?

        • +1

don't see why not. as far as gaming monitors go - you have a decent gpu.

put simply, 120hz is the refresh rate of the monitor which would imply that the monitor can keep up with your graphics card output to up to 120 frames per sec which is good considering how the standard measure of playability for a game is a minimum of 30 frames per sec.

if you were me and therefore only had the resource of a gumtree sourced DELL monitor, the standard refresh rate would be around 50-60hz which would still be ok if i was playing say Crysis at full detail because on the 1050 ti , the fps would be around a comfortable 40-50 mark.

but if i was playing DOtA at full mode - then i'll be in the unusual position of the monitor's refresh rate being the bottleneck because the fps would probably be close to 80 even in a full on gank session, while the monitor would be refreshing at 60 max.

TLDR = refresh rate is what your monitor can support. given you've invested a considerable amount of dosh for your gpu - a 120hz monitor would be a sound investment while don't bother going for anything above that - unless your graphic output consistently produces >120fps for whatever you are doing (which would probably not be gaming)

        • @tomadeira: Cheers for the in-depth answer, mate!

        • +1

          @ml17:

happyto help. oh if you are buying the monitor to use with this particular laptop - might be worthwhile to buy one that has "g-sync" which is nvidia's way of syncing the gpu's framerate with the monitor's refresh rate.

For Radeon users - look for freesync monitors

        • @tomadeira: Sorry to bombard you with questions… Would the Alpha N850HJ for $1179 be able to run recent games at a playable standard?

Looking at single-player games like, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt GOTY, Resident Evil 7, GTA V, Fallout 4, NBA 2k18, etc.

        • +1

@ml17: depends on your definition of standard. it'll certainly run those games smoothly on medium settings.

but given its a laptop - i'd say you'd be grateful you spent the extra $200? or less for the 1050 ti given its the bare minimum and i'm sure you'd like your laptop to last you for the next 3 years or so.

worth double checking but i'm sure most metabox gpu are in MXM format (upgradeable in the future but still $$$)

        • @tomadeira: Yes, I just thought of that too. Definitely worth the investment. Thanks for that, tomadeira!

        • +1

@ml17: glad to assist. it's really not so much about cpu but gpu for gamees.

So if you were savvy - i'd suggest searching for a P150sm which comes with a Haswell quadcore but more importantly ensure it has a GTX 780M.

Do not be swayed by modern GPU such as 940MX or such. The 780M is actually a close equal to the 1050 ti depending on which benchmark you run, however just less energy efficient given the older tech.

The benefit of these would be that you get 4 slots requiring DDR3 Ram vs DDR4 (which costs an arm an a leg) therefore a 32gb ddr3 system will last you at least 3-5 years which is hopefully when you move on from gaming :)

you'd be able to get one if lucky for half the cost but without warranty

  • +2

Another alternative.. slightly cheaper, bigger ssd, no hdd, ~10% slower processor

    https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Gaming-i5-7300HQ-GeForce-AN515-5…

  • really tempting to get this. My laptop still works fine-ish from 1.5 years ago.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/267106

  • Do I have to reformat this to get ride of the spyware?

  • How does this compete with the Acer Nitro 5?:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/366972

    • +2

this has better CPU and different hard drive combo

  • Very tempting at this price.

  • Guys, before anyone orders this, AFAIK the $1000 GST threshold is on the total shipped price.

With current exchange rate, this laptop is over the $1000 GST threshold, and will attract the 10% GST + 5% custom duty on the "delivered" price + any other one-off import processing charges. After all these charges, it is likely this laptop will end up costing close to or likely more than A$1200. This doesn't sound that attractive to me at all?

    • +2

Nah mate - the customs form will have $749 printed on it - B&H do these all the time… Add this to the cart and then add something say $100 more, you'll see it now calculates and makes you pay for the import fee with your total - same as Amazon

      • I see. I have ordered B&H Photo before but always less than A$1000, and I can't remember what they put on the customs form. If they don't declare the shipping costs on the customs form, then we should be sweet then. Thanks for confirming.

  • No Lenovo worldwide warranty is the only thing stopping me. Anyone have experience with B&H for warranty repairs?

  • Could this laptop play all the latest games?
Not at full highest performance settings of course, but could it play at a decent standard.
Also, any 4k gaming if I connect this to 4k tv via the HDMI plug ?

    • +1

      Depending on what you mean by "decent", if that is over 60 fps;
      1080p: Yes.
4K: No, don't even think about it.

  • @urbancartel Just bought the item - However price went up to $1069 AUD. That means the Laptop is now $1008.. Should this be okay? Annoyed though because the B&H site said $1028 but when I paid it went up without warning!

    • That's confusing - did you pay with PayPal & were you given a final price before confirming…To be honest I think it will be OK as the figure from what i've been told will be the goods value of USD $749 which should be printed on your customs form and at current market conversion is coming up as $973… Also how are you getting that unit cost $1008 ? If you have some doubt though i'd recommend cancelling as I certainly don't want anyone paying more than they should ;)

      • Yeah I paid with Paypal. On B&H it said $1028 AUD..

So it came to $749 USD for the unit and $45 USD for shipping. Exchange rate: 1 AUD = 0.742764 USD

        Their website did say this:

"No Duties & Tax Below Threshold
        Choose Pre-Pay Duties & Tax
        on orders above the threshold;
        no additional charges at delivery.

B&H has served thousands of satisfied Australian customers."

        • +1

Yeah I think the amount they quote seems a little off - it's almost close to a fee free transaction… Best of luck mate

  • good deal for a gaming laptop as someone who has a gaming laptop with similar specs you can play most/all games on a semi-decent level

    • That's really bad of Lenovo. I could understand a reseller getting it wrong, maybe, but for the Lenovo website to sell a 1050 as a 1050ti is horrible.

It's especially dodgy that people are commenting that it showed up as a 1050ti in the geforce experience but after some driver updates it showed as a 1050.

Here's hoping no one who ordered it through this listing gets a 1050 instead of what they paid for.

  • Little bit of research on this laptop shows a keyboard problem where the only reliable fix is to have the keyboard sent back to lenovo for replacement. Thread here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Laptops/Lenovo-Legion-Y5… Hopefully this batch doesn't have the faulty keyboard issue.

    • Saw some people in that thread commenting on how they coudn't get the issue fixed due to moving since they purchased they laptop and Lenovo not having international warranty.

On Lenovo's website they state they have global warranty "in any country where their machine type is announced and sold and supported by Lenovo or a Lenovo authorized reseller under Lenovo Limited Warranty and/or the destination country Warranty Services Agreement."

      https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/pd004172

I wonder what the story really is..

  • Its showing up as USD $1,099.99

    • No worries - have expired deal ;)

  • When I saw this deal on Thursday I thought it looked quite good. But I'm not one to knee jerk, so I did a little research and I have answers to the cost of potential import duties/tax.
I ordered the laptop but in the heat of the moment made the mistake of 'Failing to follow the delivery guidelines' which state very clearly that if you want peace of mind and the ability to cancel an order if it's not quite what you understood, then you must go to the 'Duties & Tax' box and click on…. 'Choose Pre-Pay Duties and Tax on orders above the threashold'
Because I messed up I used the CHAT contact function and spoke to the customer support team and they were truly helpful and informative. They allowed me to modify my order and have the payment made by them. The additional cost was $US99.84 The most important thing I learned was that this company is honest, transparent and customer focused. …… worth $100.
Within 4 hours the order was prossed and passed on to DHL Traking has been very informative the laptop arrived in Sydney yesterday and is expected to clear customs and be delivered Tuesday……. Very happy…. so far.

  • I was wondering to buy this or not then I saw it was expired. My Horize P151SM1B i7-4700MQ GTX670MX 3GB I bought 5 years ago has almost died
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/106669

The frame itself has come loose and the fan keeps knocking and im not sure if its possible to fix it. I was going to ask their company if they could extend the deal or ask. Would anyone else be interested in getting a few more if possible?
