Microsoft have extended the 40% discount on new TechNet subscriptions that they offered to those attending the "Heroes Happen 2008" events… TO EVERYONE!
I purchased a TechNet Plus Direct subscription myself ($307 with the discount applied) and I now have access to unrestricted, GENUINE licensed copies of Windows XP, Vista (Business, Ultimate & Enterprise), 2003/2008 Server and a whole range of MS applications such as the XP/2003/2007 Office Suites.
For around the price of a single Vista Home Premium retail upgrade you can get pretty much the entire range of Microsoft Operating Systems & Applications.
Get yours now before the end of June. :)

  • Sounds great, but on the webpage is says "Software provided through TechNet Plus is for evaluation purposes and cannot be used in a live production environment". So, I guess you're never 'using' the software, just evaluating it? :)

Also, surely your subscription has to be active to be allowed to continue using it? i.e. if you don't renew in a year are you still allowed to use the software (for evalutation purposes)?

  • The software is not time-limited, only the access to the TechNet portal/download website. If you download all the product keys and installation files within your subscription period, you are free to continue using them after that time.
Pretty much you can use the software for anything other than commercial business (production) purposes (unless your business is "evaluating" a potential commercial purchase) :)
Each product/product key can be activated on up to 10 different machines (if you re-install on the same machine/hard-disk it doesn't affect your remaining activations)

Read this blog by IT guru Ed Bott:

    Post no.21 explains it best:
"there’s a Product Key page where you get to request keys for individual products. Each key is good for 10 separate activations on different hardware, and the license is perpetual, meaning it doesn’t expire if your subscription runs out. The reason to renew your subscription is to get access to new releases, not to maintain access to old ones."

  • A lot of people are probably reading this on a copy of XP or Vista which they downloaded off the internet somewhere, because it was the "latest thing" and they simply "had to have it and give it a go".
What better way is there of getting genuine and having a go of the latest Windows OS or MS apps without time limits, a guilty conscience or those annoying "This copy of Windows is not GENUINE" nag messages/popups… at a fraction of the retail prices?
    :)
