  • Do you guys remove your dash cam when you park your car to keep thieves away?

    • +4

Nope. Also this dashcam is cheap, not worth stealing.

      • -3

It's not about the value of the dash cam. It's about making you a bigger target for a break in. If they break in, they're not just going for the dash cam. They're going to look at what else you have inside, and I don't want that. And the potential to pay up to fix the door.

People took GPS off their screen and wiped the mark just to reduce the risk of a break in.

Thieves will take anything, irrespective of value. I have heard of people who just left coins visible and got broken into. People are unpredictable, especially desperate people.

        • So do you remove your dash cam every time you car is parked?
Leaving it there could potentially find out a hit & run in the parking lot.

        • @Kelvin0911:
Only if the dash cam was wired to continuously record though

        • +5

          @kacak:

im a full time car thief, i always steel dashcams, especially new models and sell them on ebay. Look for me on ebay "dashcamthief"…

        • LOL the thief must be dumb just targeting only cars with dashcams, break in and then decide to steal something else from the cars. I think they rather peek into cars for something more valuable e.g. laptops or iPhone. They will ignore Xiaomi gadgets since they can get them cheap on OzB deals all the time :p

        • @edfoo: we have druggies here who steal even main hole's metalic cover, stole our water meter (it has copper in it), break the window even if they see $1 on dashboard. My GPS is 6 years old not more than a few dollars worth but i always take it off when parked as they might break the window for a few dollars and then i will be spending hundreds of dollars to get it fixed

        • @sidozziee: Sad you are around those bad neighbourhood. I am guessing if you drive a semi-decent car and has nothing attached to the windscreen or dashboard, they will probably try to break in your car anyway. I try not to park my car in dodgy looking streets.

    • +1

I don't think anyone does because it would be pretty annoying reattaching it to the windscreen each time. It's more of a set it up once type thing. Also, some people set up a parking mode with a battery.

    • nope…

you'd have to be unlucky to get a thief that hasnt stolen and tried to flog off a dashcam before…
after his/her first go they'd realise its not worth much/time+effort.

more and more cars have one now - and as it could be recording / other cameras around inside the car - thinking as a thief/i'd more likely to target one that doesnt have one…. so it can be a deterant

    • When cameras were expensive they could be with stealing.
      Now mostly worthless Chinese cheapies.
Only a couple of expensive brands but they aren't that obvious.

    • Actually I remove my keys thats more effective, followed by the steering wheel in more dangerous locations.

  • +3

Hmm US$28.60 from previous deal that you linked to… makes this less tempting!

    • Rep tells me that the prices for this model have gone up, the previous prices were only promotional :)

  • +1

Has anyone every have this dash cam just talk to them randomly while driving? I know it has voice commands but we don’t speak Chinese, and occasionally it will start talking back in Chinese.

    • Yes mine does that. I need to figure out what it is trying to say :)

    • Yes I noticed that today… it spoke to me out of the blue too.

      • +9

You sure it wasn't the Chinese government telling you Tiananmen square was a figment of your imagination?

    • mine doesnt.
but maybe its wifi signal lost or out of memory/mem card fail?

maybe drive with ur phone on record mode and upload the message.

      try a reset/reconfigure?

  • Is there a way to attach this dashcam to a suction cup as I want to remove it from the windscreen from time to time :)

  • any recommended SD card? Will this one be good enough: https://www.lightinthebox.com/samsung-64gb-micro-sd-card-tf-…

    • Yeah U3 class is probably overkill to be honest.

  • Apparently this has lithium batteries built in rather than a capacitor? Not so good if it gets reasonably warm in your part of the country.

    • +1

A big no if u are in melbourne.

After buying on this deal on 2/2/2018:

Xiaomi 70 Minutes Smart Wi-Fi Car DVR Car Dashcam 1080p Camera (DVR) US $28.00 (~ AU $34.98) Free Shipping @ LightInTheBox

My order was first delayed and finally cancelled last Thursday - 4 weeks and 6 days later - as out of stock.

I was not happy with this outcome and will hesitate to order again from these guys.

    • You should PM the rep with your order number for a follow-up. I'm sure there will be a valid response as to why and what can be done to remedy this hiccup.

      • +2

They ran out of stock and refused to process the orders, rep can't help on this one. They didn't have the stock, prices went up, decision was made to not honor the previous pricing based on price increase.

I got my cancellation emails when they had stock advertised on the site at a higher price.
It's a risk we take on the "promo" or "below cost" pricing I guess, but still not a good experience and can understand why Appleboat is concerned.

        • I see. Well, I'd be miffed too if I could not get in on something that is offered at a great discount.

    • Same here.
Was a bit disappointed but still ok when they cancelled because of out of have stock.
But then they now have this in stock.
It looks like that they basically cancelled the order because they don't want to sell it at that price.

  • +2

Thanks OP, bought one from the previous deal and just bought another in case I get rear-ended…

  • Is it really good to get one? Regardless of price but usability and reliability?
Always thought I needed one but hesitate to buy thinking if I really want one.

    • Wait and go the english version.

  • Anyone had issues with this when connecting it? All the time when i try to connect to the device the wifi drops and when it connects it tells me to format the sd card. Once the SD card is formatted it works, however next time i try to connect i have to follow the same process of formatting.

I have also reset the device on multiple occasions.

  • Can i ask a silly question? It's called a 70 minute recorder, but surely it can record for longer right? Seeing that it can take an SD card up to 64gb? I'm a little confused..

    • +1

In previous threads they said the literal translation is "70 miles". It's just a brand name. Yes it fills up an SD card (well around 75% of an sd card, as it reserves some space for saved videos of accidents or photos), using separate video files of around a minute in length, and then when the 75% space is full it loops back and overwrites the oldest recording in first-in-first-out order. So the short answer is: yes, it records for longer than 70 minutes.

      • Ahh awesome! Thank you so much!!!

      • Thank you too! :)

  • how does this perform compare to VIOFO?

    • +2

Viofo A119S v2 is supposed to have better night vision, better clarity overall, as well as an LCD screen, which this does not have, and you can buy it with a GPS module which this does not have. But it's 2.0 to 2.5 times the price (best AUD price it's been was around $81 or $82). The general impression I formed was that that this would be great for a rear dashcam (or a decent basic front front dashcam), and the A119S v2 with GPS would be ideal as a fancier front dashcam.

So I bought this in dashcam a previous deal for USD $28, which was billed on 28 degrees as AUD $35.26, got $2.07 cashback through cashrewards, bringing the final price to $33.19. Fitted a 32 GB samsung Evo+ SD card purchased for $16.72, which has a $0.21 cashback pending. So total price for dashcam + SD card = 33.19 + 16.72 - 0.21 = $49.70 . My intention was also purchase the Viofo A119S v2 for the front when there was a deal for ~$82. But that plan has hit a snag, and it's not with this dashcam (it seems fine) …

The problem I have is that the boot cigarette lighter in my car (Hyundai i30) turns out to always have power, even when the car is off (the front cigarette lighter does not do this). That's a problem as it means it's likely to run the battery flat, and it will wear out the SD card in no time recording 24/7. I'm still trying to work out if there's some way to make the power to the boot turn off when I pull the keys. If anyone has an idea please let me know. If I can't find a solution I guess I'll just forget having a rear dashcam and will switch to using this as a front dashcam.

      • -1

That's an easy solution, all that you need to do is take the cable, hook it up with the cigarette lighter in your car. Check if it's running, if it's then it's good. What you have to do now is to make make sure it is not working 24/7 is to plug it in whenever you drive and out whenever you finish driving……..

now now.. joke aside… i don't really know how to do it. Hopefully someone can help. that being said. Thank you for your advice.

        • Haha 😆

In reality though, I think you are supposed to draw a wire from the fuse box - from a circuit that does switch off when the car is turned off. You then use this to power your dashcam.

      • Use a time delay circuit board?

  • Don't trust these guys, I bought one last deal cost 27.xx$, waited for more than one month, then guess what, They did not say anything wrong with the order, just refunded me 25.xx$ into my paypal. what a fuxxk, I lost 2$ for nothing.

    • Did you open a PayPal dispute to get the rest of your money back?

      • Can I ?

        • +2

          That's what it's there for.

  • Comes to ~AUD47 not ~AUD40.30 as in title? Add to that insurance ~AUD3 so about AUD50 each? can you please clarify how you're able to get it for AUD40.30?

  • Deal should be marked expired. The coupon shows expired on 27/03/2018.
