Ubiquiti Unifi AC LR AC1300 Wireless Access Point - $133.60 Posted @ Sydneytec & Shopping Express - eBay

Was looking for a decent WAP to reach my backyard. Have seen nothing but praise for these Ubiquiti units.

Management software is easy to use and doesn't need to be running all the time (advanced features will be unavailable though). Will eventually pick up a few of these to expand my network.

Anyone have experience with these? How do you find them

I get solid reception throughout my house and yards (375sqm block).

I have been very happy with mine.

Just need an Edge Router now to replace my old Billion router…

I got a couple of the lites, and they are perfect. Just set up and never think about it again.

Weird how every coupon-eligible store is selling them at a premium to other sellers, though….

business device so businesses usually pay near full price

  • I have an Asus 68u router with Merlin. Can I add on this Ubiquiti access point for wireless and still use the filtering options I have on the Asus?

    • if the filtering is via router not wifi

  • A little bit of a premium .. most places have it for $37 not for over $2k https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Purchase-TP-Link-TL-MR3040-Porta…

The Ubiquiti Unifi AC LR are awesome, I have 2 in my townhouse and can even get wifi across the street with it and I forget about it too as it just works and works and works and works and works and works ….

Yes, they're excellent value for money and I'd buy them again in an instant.

The management software can be run-as-required from your laptop. I run it in a virtual machine. You do need to run it continuously for advanced features like WPA2-Enterprise but most people will never need to do that.

They are decent performers when compared to similar products from Meraki and Aruba, and for the price they're very hard to beat. But they are not the fastest wireless. For example you can get better wireless throughput from some Netgear routers. WiFi is full of misleading claims about throughput (e.g. 1300 is the PHY rate, not the data rate, and then there's MIMO) but suffice to say they perform better than I expected for the price.

Installation is heavy on the technical side. They're not really a home-user oriented product. But for anybody with even a moderate level of technical skill, should be no trouble at all.

The company releases software patches often and provides decent support via forums and updates. I've found them to be rock-solid; installed a year ago, haven't had to do anything since.

I recommend buying a Unifi PoE switch to go with it. Any PoE switch or PoE injector should work but the UniFi PoE switch integrates with the management software.

    • Next step will be a couple more WAPs and a PoE switch I reckon.

Will have to decide whether to fork out for the PoE + switch that can do the PRO waps, or just regular for the LITE and LR ones

      • new edgerouter 6 has 6 POE for those that dont need a additional switch

    • tho if all your devices are wifi there is no benefit of management on switch

    • I only use my WiFi for my mobile devices and my PS4 (although really I could hook it upto ethernet anyway) and my main gaming PC is on Ethernet.

I've never noticed any speed issues with the WiFi and for me coverage was more important than outright speed anyway as I need to use WiFi Calling on my mobile.

My thoughts are that if you want to push a lot of data fast around your home network (eg. PC to NAS/Server) then you should have those deviced on Gigabit Ethernet anyway…

Plus now many people cant even get 100Mbps on the National Fraudband Network anyway, so WiFi speed is the least of their issues!

  • How would these compare to the Netgear Orb or Google Wifi? Any pros/cons to be aware of?

    • Those are mesh devices where this is an access point. You'll still need to own a dedicated router for this and its designed to be hard wired into that router as opposed to those other products that are designed to work with one another over wireless. Another big difference is this is designed to be ceiling mounted with cable running through the ceiling to the router where those mesh products are designed to be dropped onto shelves. As some have alluded to the management software best works if run 24/7 on a standard PC or using another Unifi piece of hardware such as the Gateway they sell (router that goes for around $150) which has the controller integrated. You can forgo the controller but and just start it up on a PC on demand.

Probably a stack of extra pros and cons but those ones jump out to me. I'd say the Netgear and Google are more suited to more home users (or the Ubiquiti Amplifi family) looking for an easy setup than the Unifi AP which is more small business that just so happens to be at a price point that makes it very viable for home users should one wish. The mesh devices would also be great for rentals where putting a hole in the ceiling isn't an option.

    • Netgear orbi/google wifi if you want mesh without ethernet cables. I wouldn't go either if you are gaming on wifi though.

    • I have read that Google Wifi can be ethernet backhauled if you have more than 1 e.g if you buy the 3 pack.

However according to the support documents it the looks like all internet traffic ends up traversing the primary point.

I just use the mobile app to manage them otherwise it just runs. you still do need a router, it can even be the one from your ISP, just turn the ISP Router Wifi off for best performance. You can turn the Blue light off on it and block clients and do all the normal setting on it via the app.

When I bought a few I was like ouch with pricewise coming from the crowd of cheap TP-links and Belkin`s modem/routers… now I look at it and think why did I wait so long, just no hassle even when there is a firmware update it is easy to do.

Don't look at it as a wireless AP but more of investment in fewer hassles.

  • Bought this 5 months ago for my house to extend the range 120 meters away. Works an absolute treat and is actually faster than my current modem.

  • Have two unifi ap AC Pro they work great and haven't skipped a beat since installing them.

I installed the controller software in a jail on my FreeNAS box but you can get the cloud key if desired or use the app as someone suggested earlier.

Just on the mounting I have one on top of a shelf at one end of the house and one on the floor at the other end, no issues at all.

    • Yeah my LR is siting on the top shelf in the linene cupboard that is centrally located within my house.

Works fine so figure why muck around mounting it now!
