I like how they have multiple locations at university sites while those same campuses routinely and pointlessly march and chant demanding more money for Youth Allowance

Never understood someone who's "poor" but still drinks $5 coffee and eats out every day….

      • That's how they become poor.

So you know all students protesting drink coffee at these coffee shops? Faulty thinking.

A lot of coffee drinking staff at unis! A captive market. Students are there for a short time each week & not year round. So coffee shops rely on staff patronage.

The uni (& other) bars are the usual place students spend a lot of money, but few complain about that??
Many students used to tell me they had no money for studies, but I'd regularly see them drunk at the bar.

      • You can get lots of free food at uni and some uni events have bar tabs where you can eat/drink your fill.

That generally means it is being paid for by funds accumulated from students, rather than directly from the wallet of the students at the event. Ultimately the students pay.

Used to write about student lifestyle, study, lecture, & run my own business on campus at the same time - so saw it from a few different perspectives.

Lumping all students in the same basket (they complain about low support payments while wasting money on drinking whatever) is seriously flawed.

I've know students with millionaire parents, who buy them a BMW without noticing it. They never protested for better support, and drank.lots of expensive coffee.

The student community is not all poor! If you can afford a large financial commitment to study, you probably can afford the occasional coffee.

(I paid my own way through uni, working many hours a day, only having coffees if free. I found ways to support myself & prosper because of it.)

        • @Infidel: Did your writings about student lifestyles ever get published? I'm sure they'd be an ultra fascinating read

        • @Joey Jo Jo:
Of course - as a student newspaper I set up. Student lifestyle is interesting, especially to students. Targeted advertising paid for my drinks budget🍻

        • @Infidel: Amazing

        • @Joey Jo Jo:
That was an alternative when I was on a tight budget. Writing articles on lifestyle mean lots of invites & freebies. And a lot of time spent in coffee shops & bars!
As the writing became popular, the uni paid me to lecture in writing.

I had a different but highly enjoyable student experience😀

        • @Infidel: you should write a book about it. I'm sensing a number 1 best seller!

        • @Joey Jo Jo:
Thanks, but I'll pass on that.

        • @Infidel: you go girl!

    thanks OP

  • Is it just the regular size coffee that is free?

  • Unsure if this still works. Just registered now and I’ll check when I get another coffee this arvo.

    • It’s still listed as an offer on the Friends of Merlo site, did it work for you?

      • +1

Haven’t tested the theory yet. Might give it a go tomorrow at work!
