  • I recommend the Overdrive app for podcasts.

The free version is fine, the ads are so small at the bottom you hardly even notice them.

I’m a fan of Pocket Casts. I can’t see much difference between these two apart from this one not supporting Apple Watch.

Love pocket casts but the one feature it lacks is the ability to specify a playlist in a specific order.

With overcast you can define a playlist to play podcasts in a specific order. I love this as I always prefer to listen to certain podcasts over others. Unfortunately pocket casts only lets you select newest to oldest or vice versa.

I still use pocket casts as I don’t like the ads in overcast but hope they’ll add the ability for custom podcasts in the future.

The ads in overcast are tiny though? and they are only for other podcasts so its at least relevant you know? no weight loss pills or running shoes, just a thumbnail for a featured podcast and a little blurb for what it's about, and they don't impact the performance of the app which I really appreciate (unlike the ads in an app like myfitnesspal for example that slow the app to a crawl and eventually crash)

    What's wrong with Apple's Podcast?

    • In a nutshell? Apple have taken what was a perfectly good podcast app and continually "improved" it to the point where it's now significantly less functional and less intuitive than it once was.

  • I find apple podcasts very slow, unresponsive and clunky. It regularly crashes on me. I'm more than happy to try a free alternative. Thanks OP

  • Any different to Spotify?

Surprised that no one is mentioning Overcast, hands down the best podcast app for the simple feature of smart speed, it reads the silences betweens words and sentences and tightens everything up so that the conversation flows more smoothly and at a steadier pace, so even if you dont like speeding up your podcasts and think everything should be 1x, you can still do that without sitting through long drawn out pauses.

It even has a counter in the app that tells you how much time the smart speed feature has saved you at 1x playback, suffice to say that it has saved me hours upon hours of listening time. Oh and it's free, has a true dark mode for iphone X, recently implemented a smart skip feature that tries to skip into the gap between words and has a smart resume feature so that when you pause or your audio gets paused for you (during GPS for example) it will rewind a second or two and resume from there for context. Can't say enough nice things about the app.
