I Think I Might Have Been Scammed Selling Ed Sheeran Concert Tickets

Hi there, my first time posting so please be kind. I recently sold a pair of Ed Sheeran tickets on Gumtree because I couldn't make it the very last minute. Someone messaged me and said he would be happy to do a bank transfer with a screenshot of the receipt upon payment. That happened last Monday (Victoria public holiday)

I have never wanted to conduct bank transfers especially if the fund is not immediately cleared into my account. However, my friend told me that it's fine as long as there is a proof of receipt. Anyway, I got the picture of the receipt from his bank (he's with Westpac and I'm with NAB BTW) and I emailed him the tickets. Anyway, as of today, I have yet to see the money in my account and I tried calling him but his phone was turned off.

I went to NAB and they informed me that it could potentially take 2-3 business days for the funds to show. Otherwise I could file a dispute after today and they can look into it. I have the guy's email address and full name. I'm wondering if there is anything else that I can do to get in touch with him or at least track him down.

Any kind advice is very much appreciated..

UPDATE : Thank you everyone for your responses. I haven't been able to update for the past few days as I have been trying to recover my money but alas, to no avail. So yes, I've let this go and treat it as a lesson. Hopefully this post helps other people as well. I just wish people are kinder to one another.

      Let's go to a concert I couldn't go to which is the sole reason I sold the tickets on the off chance that the guy who scammed and resold them is likely there himself so I can get them back or convince staff for a refund even though I sold my tickets and I'm fairly sure it's against their policy to resell seats. Sounds good. 👍

    For me, Gumtree = Cash only.

    Sorry to hear your troubles. Let this be a hard lesson and do not trust people because more often they are oppurtunists and would scam you. Hope for your sake the money comes through.

    Let me share a story from my experience which happened about 7 years ago and not related to gumtree. I put up my gaming pc for sale as i was migrating and a fellow gamer made an offer and set up a date a day before my departure. Because i’d met him couple of times i trusted him and said no to other offers I had. The day of the deal he arrived and paid me about $70 less. When I asked about it he said because he had To refuel for pick up… (wtf.. ). He knew either I sell it to him 70 less or i wont be able to sell it because i’m leaving the next day so he took advantage of that. (People are scum)

    Here is the second part of that story which is also true and not made up. 2 months later the guy messaged me and says encountered problems with keyboard and he wants a refund for it. I told him I will need to inspect the keyboard myself first, so if he’s willing to pay for my air tickets to come down for it i’d be okay. (I had mentioned no refunds on my ad but felt better to say what I told to a scum like him)

    Why is everyone giving @op such poor advice? Messaging their friends, emailing them, reporting them etc will likely lead to nothing.

    It's likely the scammer is proficient at the art and used to all kinds of threats. They probably used fake name, email, FB and a VPN.

    You are likely not getting your money back nor are you catching the guy, he is probably using burner accounts anyway so any email you send is pointless. Live and learn, it's the tech age and any document can be manipulated or forged.

    You wouldn't let someone walk into your house and take your TV if they offered 2 x it's value next week after they test it, so don't do the same online.

    Don't let these guys get your hopes up that maybe he used his real bsb details etc. HE DIDN'T.

  • Any update OP? Did you received the fund?

    Serious advice here. Assuming you are the original purchaser of the ticketzz contact Ticketek and ask to reissue the ticket (you can tell this story as I can’t see a better excuse to make) they can reissue the ticket to you which invalidates the previous ticket - though its best to check, and may even be worth comparing the new pdf with the old one to see if the barcode has been changed

    I ordered a hard copy ticket for friends who lost them. So i asked for replacement ticket and they happily reissue it to me. Upon reissue they told me that the old ticket will be invalid.

    I did it through their online form. If you prefer to call it may be a bit hard getting to their helpline, but this number seemed to work ‭02 8240 2130‬

    All the best

    Comes for advice, doesn’t tell us the outcome.

    • Funny you say that. I saw very similar on a FB BSS page. Slightly different as from what I could tell, seats were advertised as GA, but were not.

      She posted a bank receipt and said she hadn't been able to get to the floor.

      He posted saying the money never cleared and she didn't take them.

      Inconsistencies everywhere.

      I got out the popcorn and the post suddenly appeared to be deleted :(

      There should be consequences to us OzBargainers left in limbo here

      If you post a story there must be an ending;
      You must provide updates within an appropriate timeframe;
      You must not leave OzBargainers in limbo;

      Consequence account in penalty box for 5 days…

      Suggestions from anyone else?

        Here is the ending:

        After OP went on OZB and posted his story, no OZBer was able to help. The scammer got away with it and started working on another scam. OZBers got upset because OP didn't bother providing an update.

        This is OZBargain, not OZSoap or OZDrama or OZJustice.

          Alternate ending: op is fueled with rage that he was scammed so proceeds to scam another Gumtree user for sia concert tickets to make up his losses.

          And so the cycle begins… The end.

        Check update on original post.

        • You need to report incidents like this to the police regardless.

          The issue is the scammer feels he can get away with it with you and then tries this on someone else…

          Behaviour like this needs consequences…

          I hope you have reported this to police

    Sorry OP, so easy to scam someone online. Especially if someone looking for a fast transaction.

    I've been scammed myself through direct deposit of $800. Lesson learnt.

    Gumtree = cash on pickup or paypal then pickup. Cause even if the buyer dispute the item/money through paypal, it will be in the sellers favour cause pickup is not protected.

    • No, don't accept PayPal in Gumtree. Cash on pickup only.

      No do not do this. Common scam is to pay via PayPal and then do a chargeback with your credit card issuer.

      • Why so against it? I've sold over maybe 50 items on gumtree and considering the high scam rate, and possibly around 20 were paypal transactions and never had a paypal dispute.

        Even gumtree itself you can have the option to link your paypal. So they passively think it's another way to pay.

        Each to their own.

        • 20 is not a high sample size. Scams of this nature have even been discussed on OzBargain. Why risk it???

  • Feel bad for you

      It's been almost 5 years, I'm hoping they're over it by now.

      • Lol.. thought this is a post related to this year's concert… Sorry

        • No need to apologise. :-)
