why can't you just join and simply untick the subscription box, it only takes 1 minute

    • depends if you want to give cudo your email address.

The login box is incredibly annoying but I agree that it is too much hassle to bypass the login box.

Instead I just simply don't visit Cudo. Their loss really.

  • Firefox: alt - t - o - (go to content if first time) - j - hit enter - F5 to reload.

  • why login, just go to allthedeals.com.au or dealsguide.com.au

    • I don't see cudo on either of them?, it's on buyii.com.au tho..

It's funny to see just how many of these sites there are, and that yellow pages has jumped on-board.

    • Yep we at Buyii have Cudo covered everyday :)

      • I've wondered, do u get kick backs from each of the sites when people sign up through your site?

        • Yes we do for some, but not for most unfortunately :(. Usually cost per leads or referral credits which helps go towards running the site.

  • or you could just click on the Cudo logo.

    I found,

So it basically plants a cookie so my subsequent page views would not get me redirected. Only the first page view visiting the site would get prompted with user confirmation. However the new cookie (ASP.Net_SessionID) is only valid for the session, i.e. the duration for the browser staying open. So once you close the browser you'll get prompted again the next time you visited Cudo.

And here is a little hack so it does not nag you every time (assuming you are using Firefox)

    1. Download a Cookies editor plugin for Firefox. I just use Cookies Editor
    2. Add a new cookie:
      • Name: LastLogin
      • Content: 30/12/2010
      • Host: cudo.com.au
      • Path: /
      • Expires: Some random time in the future
    3. Close Firefox, and now go to Cudo — you won't get prompted even without logging in.

Similar hack should be available with Chrome with its own cookies editor extention.

    • yep works!!!

  • Looks like hacking the cookie to bypass the redirect is not good enough. Aggregator website operators might still get a cease & desist mail from Cudo.

    http://delimiter.com.au/2011/01/31/legal-threat-cudo-warns-d…

Australian ‘deal of the day’ site Cudo has sent local group buying aggregation site Buyii a letter claiming it is infringing its copyright by listing its deals and logo alongside those of rivals.

Buyii is run by OzBargain member zhenjie and we might hear from him on how the whole thing unfolds.

    • In Lifehacker's report on this they explain that Cudo's main issue is that Zhen redirects to Cudo using an iframe, so it is still branded as buyii even when on Cudo.

I can understand their objection, but it's pretty rough on Zhen. Especially since buyii is providing Cudo with some traffic (although I suppose all us aggregators combined hardly make much of an impact on Cudo's overall traffic)

In the spirit of solidarity, I hope Zhen and Cudo can reach a sensible resolution!

      • Okay. Here is the Life Hacker article you have referenced:

        http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/01/cudo-were-not-opposed-t…

Interestingly AllTheDeals was used as counter argument here, consider the founder of AllTheDeals, Alexei, also works as a product manager at NineMSN, who backs Cudo…

        • Really? Oh well, everybody's gotta work somewhere…

Sorry for not including a link to the original article - I was on the bus and the Nokia N8 is not good for that kinda thing.

        • Funny that Billy fails to disclose such important detail in his statements. That Cudo and AllTheDeals are run by staff who work at NineMSN (regardless of it being a side project or not) should have been made clear to the public in the press releases.

I still have hope Cudo and its CEO come to their senses and work out a positive solution for not just Buyii, but other aggregators. In the end, its the visitors to such sites who will miss out on deals if Cudo decides to play rough.

    Hey Zhenjie ,

Yep, I work at ninemsn, but it’s a pretty big place and my role has no bearing on my relationship with cudo.

Have you considered people don’t want to work with you due to your questionable SEO practices. e.g.

    • You have registered ..

    allthedeal.com.au
    dealmix.com.au
dealguide.com.au (bet your happy about that one Jackson?)

… and are pointing them to your own site. Pretty low behaviour.

Perhaps if you were a bit more honest professional companies might want to work with you?

    • It's fact that should have been disclosed when you came to the aid of Cudo and when Cudo used you as part of their spin. Its something that should be clearly stated instead of trying to be hidden. Funny you should bring up our question of honesty in light of that.

The SEO excuse was one that has only been brought to light after Cudo got all this press coverage. If Cudo have an issue with it, they should have said so in an email, rather then a Cease and Desist which didn't mention it at all. The SEO tagging is blown out of proportion, that article you tagged sees no traffic at all, its merely for SEO. If you have an issue with the domains then feel free to write to me via email, which both you or Cudo have failed to do so far. I'll kindly stop the redirect if you just ask rather then throw unprofessional insults at me.

      Cheers!

To be fair to Alexei (or do you prefer Alex?) I don't think he was hiding his association with NineNSM…after all it's on his LinkedIn profile. Hardly the most sophisticated subterfuge in this day and age :)

As for squatting dealguide…well I don't think that's the biggest issue either. We're not Groupon (yet, boys…yet)! Someone might casually mistype dealsguide.com.au, but anyone typing in the URL is gonna know they mistyped when they see Buyii anyway…and hopefully come back.

Zhen I appreciate your no longer redirecting dealguide to Buyii, though. Thanks.

I'm sure we've all annoyed each other knowingly or not in the past - but our biggest problem isn't other aggregators, it's what will happen as more and more single group buying discount sites decide they want to follow Cudo's lead (and Living Social's: http://vator.tv/news/2011-01-07-livingsocial-cuts-off-daily-…).

We know that aggregators are better than visiting 15 single sites every day - we need to ensure we're not drowned out.

(btw, that Cudo ad in the top right hand corner is beginning to upset me…I'm gonna be having nightmares about that little blue bugger!)

        • Does it say that LivingSocial is stopping the aggregator from scrapping their site, or just denying the aggregators from their affiliation program?

As of ads — you can always go into your preference and turn the ads off :)

        • I think LivingSocial (US) are refusing to allow aggregators on to their affiliation program. No word yet from their Aussie cousins, unless Zhen or Alexei have received something, or JumpOnIt (who do not have a similar affiliate program, anyway)

It makes me nervous because it suggests that the good relationship we've worked hard to establish with these sites as an aggregator is rather tenuous and could collapse if attitudes swing too much towards the "We must protect our brand at all costs" mentality.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why group buying discount sites could feel threatened by aggregators. But it's such a good set up for consumers that we really want to see it work. We are working hard at trying to establish relationships that will please everybody.

    • Ditto on NineMSN as big place. I used to also work in Australian Square and have some friends in NineMSN as well, and I am not surprised that someone would be working on side projects in their spare time.

@zhenjie — as I have stated in my previous comment, I found the relationship between AllTheDeals and Cudo "interesting" but I am not suggesting that AllTheDeals are in anyway affiliated with Cudo that needs explicit disclosure. In fact Alex has to hack around his scrapper for Cudo as well.

As of domain squatting — urgh. Sorry if you learnt that from CoTD/Scoopon.

      • I'm only quoting from the Lifehacker article. "Tucker said that Cudo did not have the same problems with AllTheDeals, and indeed had given it access to a specialised feed of its offers."

That comes at complete odds to what Tucker said to me. "we have no desire to be featured on an Aggregation site"

Redirection from the domain has been stopped as per the request. I'm happy to transfer it to another owner also. I'm not here to make enemies.

        • Hey Zhen, I saw that Buyii was offline last night? What happened?

        • Everything is ok. Site was temporarily taken offline because the host said the box it was on couldn't handle the spike in traffic we saw in the past couple of days.

        • No such thing as bad publicity, eh? ;)
