Hi my background is 21 year old with roughly 40k in one savings account. I want to learn how to diversify my portfolio , I have heard about ETFS but have no idea how to get my foot in the game for stocks.
If you have any tips for me to learn I will appreciate it greatly or ideas on how I should invest my money.
Join some Aussie trading sites like Hotcopper or Topstocks and ask questions. Don;t put all your eggs in one basket. Don't get into leveraged products CFD's, FOREX etc until you have a few years of experience, or in the case of Forex you are making a consistent return by learning how to DEMO TRADE for as long as it takes before using real money.
There are plenty of investment/trading vehicles out there that will suit some trading personalties and not others so if you fail at one then look at others. If you are conservative and want minimum risk then you might check out LIC's like Wilson Asset management for eg as they do all the hardwork for you. Plenty of options there but don't expect to learn it all in a matter of weeks or months.
Read library books.*
Do not take advice from anyone who you pay money to, they do not have your interests as a priority.
*If you haven't successfully studied anything start with books on how to study and how to learn. It should include noting and/or mindmapping and retention schedules, these are very simple concepts and ensure you learn stuff rather than reading and forgetting.
Share markets are at or near top. Buy when the dip comes. Every year there is one or two corrections

I still recommend getting a subscription to Money magazine, or better yet, read if at the library. It covers everything, but has lots of articles on share investing. After reading it for a few months you will begin to understand the language, and where you can find more info.
