A friend of mine calls gambling a tax on people who don’t understand statistics. There is a reason why the advertising is now about it being a ticket to dream.

      so you're telling me there's a chance

It's good for the country. Poor people love gambling. They voluntarily pay taxes and have fun whilst doing it. A percentage of those stakes goes to the government which in turn reduces taxes for us all. Yayyyy….

Go ahead buy all the tickets you can afford. There's only a one in X million chances of winning the jackpot but what about all the tens of thousands of other smaller prizes. You could win them.

Me…I don't gamble. There's about a 95% RTP (amount returned to the player) on the horses. You could put $100 a week on the horses. Over the year you'll lose most of the time but also win loads of money sometimes and feel successful. But…figure it out over the year you spent $5,200 but "won" $4,940. You lost.

talk to the organisations trying get people off their addictions, then tell me it's good for the country.

I cannot believe leaders would treat their people like that.

    It's good for the mind.

$10 for me to dream what it'd be like if I were a millionaire for a few days is a better feeling than any amount of alcohol I could drink.

I don't know, that $10 bottle of red made me feel pretty good last night.

You don't gamble to win money, you gamble to experience the rush of the fantasy that you might win. Like any other entertainment this may have a value; personally it's around $5 at a casino once in a blue moon, or $10 for a big lottery draw.

If you expect more than entertainment then you have a misrepresentation of the product.

Good if you win, waste if you don't ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • You can buy a single lotto entry for less than $2 dollars online if you want to dream a little.

If you find yourself buying tickets more regularly then it might be worth looking into a no loss gambling option like buying premium bonds from the UK or bonus bonds from NZ.

  • We have a group at work that pool their money each week and buy a ticket. When a big draw is on they put in $50ea and get a $1000+ ticket. They rarely win more than they put in. Any winnings are always "re-invested" until there is nothing left.

I like to remind them how they'd be more likely to be run over crossing the road or struck by lightening.

Yes it's a great idea and you literally cannot lose, you just buy a ticket and you get paid BIGTIME. I don't understand how you don't know this at age 29!

If you want cheap thrills just buy those cheap offers from Slapaz or Beargest and some unknown number of days later a mystery package turns up. Or not.

    Disclaimer: I do this. 😉

  • Ask the people who have won and they'll tell you they got good value. Ask the people who have bought it for years and haven't won and they'll tell you they've wasted their money - yet they still buy it.

As long as you understand the (tiny) chances of winning, you
can weigh it up and make up your own mind.

  • According to the orange juice I drank the other night, 50% of people who win the jackpot end up having to go back to work.
Likely because they spent it on stupid sh-

Here's a suggestion… Might get a better thrill betting on bit coin. ;)

  • Save those bucks for something else.

  • Gotta be in it to win it.

  • Depends what you are trying to achieve…
    Bit of fun… Great
    Investment….. Yrah right

  • Granny spent $15 per week on lotto and casket tickets before lotto, for more than 50 years without any major win. Do the sum. If you invested $15/week for 50 years, it equals $39,000 without interest.

  • It's a good waste of money.

You may have a few small wins over the year but like all gambling the punter never wins in the long run.

  • I am fairly sure it is rigged somehow. Remember that not every draw has a DIV 1 winner and some jackpot for weeks. Then suddenly, it is up at say $30 or 50 million and they get 2 or 3 winners.

If you win it, you are happy. It isn’t easy to do - almost impossible.

I tend to buy house tickets where I know how many tickets are sold and that someone actually wins every drawer - and i get a little of their story on draw day. I can dream plus I know the money is going to a good cause. Statistical chance is much greater for me too. That is how I choose to gamble and it helps a worthy charity rather than a big fat company.
