Haagen Dazs Ice Cream $7 (Was $11.50) @ Woolworths

620

After seeing everyone in Sydney CBD get free B&J ice-cream it made me crave for some overpriced ice-cream myself. Pleasantly surprised to find these tubs at $7 each which makes it affordable. I had the strawberry tonight which was quite good, not overly sweet.

has anyone been to places like shanghai? how expensive is their icecream! one scoop of haagenddazs is like $15 aud!

    • +2

Yes! I thought the same thing. Everything western is a ripoff in SH.

    • Tourists being ripped off? Who has ever heard of such a thing before!

    • It was free as part of the buffet dinner at a hotel I stayed at in Hangzhou. It was basically the selling point of the whole hotel.

The queue was insane, though. And the ice cream wasn’t that amazing.

    • +3

I got two scoops for 53RMB last month at Nanjing West Road which is equivalent to $10 aud so you got ripped off mate

Had to re-read that first sentence.

    • Nothing wrong with fantasies…

    Every one got a free BJ & ice-cream ? …. Nice work!

  • +2

    It's a very small tub for $7.

I tried two of them. They're ok. Wouldn't buy again though, not for $7.

    • Agreed on value for money.
Also, I couldn't see anything about it in the guidelines, but is negging due to my lactose intolerance valid?

      • Probably not. That would be like negging Beats headphones because they're Beats. You'd still have a point, but it's not in the guidelines.

This one is the best Caramel Biscuit & Cream Speculoos Ice Cream

    • Sounds interesting!

This ice cream taste like ass I would know because I used to work there

    • +8

ass tasting place or ice cream making place?

    • Dupe.

I bought this last time it came down to this price but honestly it's not very good. I got a tub of chocolate and a tub of vanilla but both tasted quite average and was borderline watery.

Connoisseur has a stronger flavour with a creamier taste and it's much better value when it comes down to $5/L.

    • +1

Yeah I hadn't had ice cream in a while and saw these on special.. Bought it thinking it was premium, but it doesn't taste creamy at all..
Completely agree on borderline watery, felt like eating ice - not a great texture. Dont know how they can sell these, i'd never pay for it again

    • That's how we got rip off, imported from US like double the price, but they imported our Magnum also double our local price we got 4 in a box and they only has 3, so it's a fair deal… agreed that Connoisseur or even Sara Lee taste much better.

All the rage in Asia. They're nobodies here. Connoisseur or GTFO

I like Häagen-Dazs ice cream, but the brand slightly soured for me because I always thought it was actually Danish. It's pretending to have Scandinavian roots when it does not.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A4agen-Dazs

Häagen-Dazs /ˌhɑːɡənˈdɑːs/ is an American ice cream brand, established by Reuben and Rose Mattus in the Bronx, New York, in 1961.

    • +1

      Haha.. you got jewed.

      • +3

The Mattuses lived in Cresskill, New Jersey. They were known as supporters of Israel, founding a school of high technology in Herzliya which bears their name,[8] and supporting the Israeli settlements.[6] They were also staunch admirers of Rabbi Meir Kahane.[9] They had two daughters, Doris Hurley and Natalie Salmore, and five grandchildren.

Well I know now what not to buy. BJs it is.

Häagen-Dazs is also owned by Nestle, which are a company to avoid, if you care about ethical practices.

        • Connoisseur isn't looking too crash hot on that score:

          https://guide.ethical.org.au/guide/browse/guide/?type=18

Although they don't spell Connoisseur correctly, so that gives us an out. Phew.

        • +2

@carlordau: Nestle only bought 50% from General Mills. Ben and Jerry's is Unilever or something.
Seriously, there are only like 8 or 10 conglomerates controlling all of the world's food brands - none of them ethical. Pick your poison..

Danish doesn’t use an “a” with an umlaut. It uses Æ instead.

Swedish uses ä, but Haagen Dazs definitely doesn’t sound Swedish.

Basically, it’s meant to sound exotic. Like those made up “Asian” character names from 1960s Hollywood comedies.

I’m surprised there’s no boycott over it due to “cultural appropriation”.

$2-3 quality selling for $7,thats a deal for not to buy

  • +5

Connoisseur is the best value if its half price

    • +1

      Absolutely. It is without peer.

Haagen Daaz is ok, but not in the same league as Connisoir.

  • The Macadamian flavour is one of my favourite ice creams on earth. Insanely dangerous… Sadly it doesn’t seem to be one of the ones available to buy?

    • The good ones are never offered for sale in OZ.

      • Actually it is, I often get the macadamia nut brittle one

    • Hey I'm a fan of macadamian flavour as well, but I couldn't find it anywhere in coles or woolies in melbourne cbd.. can only find macadamia brittle but it is a totally different thing

  • +2

The Salted Caramel of HD is better than Connoisseur's.

    • ^This. I tried it in Hawaii (surprisingly cheap, unlike everything else in Hawaii!).

It's awesome. I get it whenever it's on special, so thanks OP.

Ate it on a plane once….very creamy but conn's has the taste and richness

Saw it all over London and thought it was a stupid rip off

Thanks for this. I LOVE HD ice cream. Do yourselves a favour and read the ingredient list of HD vs Connoisseur's. Made me feel sick at the idea of eating Connoisseur's ever again. HD does not use fillers or additives. It's a super pure commercial ice cream as you can possibly get. The flavours taste more real too.

    • Used to have no interest in tub ice cream, but when I did get into it, I started with Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry's, and now I'm stuck there. Later tried various Connoisseur flavours, and they tasted airy and artificial.

A lot seems to depend on what sort of taste you've 'acquired', so it probably makes most financial sense to start here :)

      • Yes I got a milkshake from a cafe today….had to throw it away as could tell they used cheap ice cream :(

    • For those too lazy to look at ingredients lists:

HG Vanilla: Condensed skimmed milk, fresh cream, sugar, egg yolk, vanilla extract.

Connoisseur Vanilla: Cream (36%), Skim Milk Concentrate, Water, Sugar, Glucose Syrup (Wheat), Dextrose Monohydrate, Flavour, Vegetable Origin Emulsifier [471 (Soy)], Vegetable Gum (410), Colours (160b).

  • Free BJ in Sydney. Mardi gras 'n'all … Seemed reasonable.

Haagen Dazs > B&J any day.

Connoisseur's is good too but a comment above about its ingredients got me worried. I used to call it the best among the Australian brands so far.

  • +1

I don't know how such a tiny tub of icecream can be worth that much

  • Das ist gut!

  • +1

Have a look at the ingredients list of haagen dazs.. That's where it is supreme. No gums or other crap in a few of the flavors at least.. It's almost a health food if you consider dairy helpful.

Macadamia brittle is my favorite. Very creamy if you let it warm as recommended

  • Still expensive make it 40% off I will consider

  • Looks like someone's "Häagen-Dazs" ice cream!

  • Speaking of Haagen-Dazs, does anyone know who the blonde girl is in their commercial? She's gorgeous. If you watch certain shows on 7Plus or Tenplay, you're forced into watching this ad literally 5 or 6 times per episode, but it's sort of worth it :)

  • I wish there was rum & raisin here.
Just out of curiosity and having a look at https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/haagendazs/ there are so many more varieties overseas!

  • +1

I like Haagen but man none of the flavours here are any good. No Rum Raisin, no green tea no praline, no butter pecan and the list goes on sigh
