Wait until 2019 because that stuff will be better than 2018 stuff

but in 2020 the stuff will be better than the 2019 stuff

      • +3

But in 2021 the stuff will either be low power versions of the 2020 stuff or cyborg implants.

        • But things get even better in 2022 when we stuff PC's straight into our brains, so we can Facebook/Google/Youtube wherever we want.

        • +2

I prefer getting year 2000 (Y2K) stuff cause then you can go back in time to 1900 or into the future 19100

        • @Kangal: But if you could cryogenically freeze yourself you could get stuff from the year 3000 that would be even better.

        • Wait for 2022!

Go for a quantum computer running Microsoft 16 Service Pack 25!

        • Yes, waiting is definitely the right decision. You can spend money now and see all the great new stuff you're missing out on, or you can hold on to that anticipation as you watch each new feature come out, but you're already waiting for the next one. Far more satisfaction and costs you nothing.

    • Intel are releasing CPUs with the meltdown, etc fixed in 2nd half 2018, I would wait otherwise you just patch the gen 8 CPU microcode on current CPUs.

Why don’t you wait till the next gen of Intel CPUs that don’t have that inherent problem.

I would wait for the new CPUs due to the current security flaw (above)
I would also wait for the new GPUS due to the cost steadily going up over time instead of decreasing of the current range.
    If you don't want to game I would still get a motherboard with HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 so I could run a 4k 40" - 48" monitor.
I would also consider a motherboard with 5GBE with a view of buying a 5GBE switch within the next 3(?)years.

[I wired my house with shielded cat6 with the intent of going 5GBE in the future]

    • I am curious why you anticipate the need 5GBE at home? Not saying you don't have a good reason, genuinely curious.

      • Multiple people in the house streaming 4k or even 8k simultaneously in future would definitely warrant it. It's a few years away but I have a friend with 3 teenage sons and his 1Gb home network struggles with the load they put on it.

I'm guessing you don't have a performance reason to upgrade.

RAM and GPU are currently at very high prices and will lower significantly.

    • once some pf the cryptos that use gpu mining fall enough there will be a glut of graphics cards on the market.

      • A glut of burnt out graphics cards that have been pushed to their maximum limits 24x7.

  • +3

never wait because you'll always be waiting for the next best thing

    • I wouldn't say never wait, because a reasonable waiting never hurts, but it's also good to set a budget and time-frame.

  • +2

Always wait, wait till alien technology is introduced in 20-30 years time.

    • I've heard it is available now if you know the right people.

      • Are you willing to be probed? Because that's how you get probed.

2017 was riddled with RAM and NAND shortage when the factories around the globe took their own sweet time upgrade to 3D NAND manufacturing tech. Most probably also some price fixing game behind it. So phones, gpus, ram, SSD, usb sticks prices went up or stayed up. The prices should be falling now and will do so in the next few months to come so if you can wait and save a few tens of dollars then why not, you are welcome.

  • Sounds like you are better off just betting a whole new computer

  • You have practically no reason to upgrade your CPU if you just game
5820k vs 8700k OC https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/2047?vs=1320 look at the game results
Especially with the price of RAM atm. Your best bet is to just OC your 5820k if you haven't already.

  • IMHO…needs before wants.

Wait for a fault to develop or perhaps even a new game to come along with higher demands.
I was told a long time ago that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Live by this credos and your life will be :)

Oz bargainers will prefer you to hold your money as there is not much by way of computer sales. However they may be just around the corner. Who knows.

As a gamer, pick your Monitor, pick your targeted FPS then power your machine to hit that number for the game you want to play + a little overhead to future proof yourself. Work backwards. Then once you know the parts you need, you can setup alerts for when they go on sale.
