  • 6th gen?

  • was it this model?

    • LOL didn't know this was posted. Potentially the same model but without the coupon code as it has expired.

  • +1

I bought it at $1599 on the previous deal (which I posted). Returned it within a day for some niggling annoyances.

My other laptop has since died, and I'd probably buy it again at $1599, but definitely not at $1899.

    • Very interesting. What were the issues?

      • +1

got one in the previous deal, would def buy again, even at $1900

      • For context, a) I was coming from a Surface Pro 4 which I'd sold and b) it was an expensive splurge on something that I didn't really need.

        Having said that, my issues:

        • The 'innovative' hinge on the screen doesn't allow it bend very far back at all. The Surface Pro 4 on the other hand could sit on a table and bend almost flat to the table (like most laptops). This is also an issue when in your lap.

        • The sharp 90 degree edges on the case make it uncomfortable to hold and also make it seem quite thick. If they'd tapered them (like the change from 1st iPad to iPad 2, or even like the edge of the Surface Pro) it would have seemed much sleeker and more comfortable.

        • For something seemingly machined out of metal, it seemed tinny and hollow, and not premium.

        • Microsoft claimed up to 16 hours battery life on this. I was testing it out by taking some notes and surfing the web and it was claiming no more than maybe 4-5 hours.

        • When removing the screen, there's no comfortable way to hold it. Due to the 90 degree edges, it's hard to pick it up off the table.

Most of those are trivial, and non-showstoppers. However, for me it was a big splurge and added up these were enough to make me return it. It just wasn't for me - it obviously is though, for many other happy buyers.

        • WHAT?!!

Hands down best laptop I have owned and I have had all sorts and still use a surface pro 4.

On a phone, at dinner. Would have loved to quote and reply correctly. Large screen bezel and thick corners are perfect especially for clumsy ass people like me. Very sturdy and solid. Super quick speeds for most demanding tasks. Screen resolution amazing.
Furthermore Microsoft have amazing warranty! Any issues head to the Microsoft store, book an appointment and problem sorted. They test it right there and then. Recently replaced an elite controller due to sticky buttons. On the spot warranty claim!

Lol its even better since i also bought it during the last promotion at $1599

        • Very surprised that they would let you return it without charging anything.

        • @Suspect420: Glad it's working out for you. It's an impressive machine, that's for sure. Just not the right fit for me.

I've heard the opposite when it comes to warranty support. If you're not lucky enough to live near a MS store it's apparently a very different experience.

        • @Crazylok560: They promote a 30 day satisfaction guarantee on their store.

        • That's brilliant! Did you just contact Microsoft to organise shipping and did they cover shipping cost?

        • @t3chshopper: I've had amazing service from their online warranty department, including when they replaced my SP1 that had a yellow tinged screen in the corner with a SP3 (including kB and pen). They even arranged a courier to collect and drop back. When I'm in the market for a new laptop I'll probably grab a surface laptop

        • @Crazylok560: I bought via their ebay store, and just ran through the returns process there. They organised a courier at their expense. They were very professional.

        • @ebosh: That's great. I never had any issues with my SP4, so didn't have to contact them. I'm only going off what I've heard, which is that if you're close to a MS store, you're in luck.

I'd certainly buy a new Surface Pro before any competitor when I'm in the market again.

        • @Crazylok560: didn't pay a cent.

Bought from EB games too. Didn't even bother looking at the receipt. That's service!

        • -1

@Suspect420: I find it hard to truly believe anyone who has two or more "amazing" statements in one post. Sounds like As Seen on TV

@ocoolio:believe what you want.. ya miserable bastard!

    Can't be 0.75Kg weight… Around 1.7Kg as per spec

  • I wouldn't touch one of these with a ten foot barge pole. Way too many issues with hardware and firmware for it to be reliable.

    • +1

What are the hardware and firmware issues? And do you think it's fixed in the Surface Book 2?

  • -1

    pervious deal was 1699?

    • +1

      $1599!

      • Thanks for correcting mate

I feel much better since I just bought one couple days ago.

  • This or Lenovo yoga 900 series?

    • This, better screen and support from Microsoft.

    • I've had a 920 for close to a month now. It's about to be replaced via DOA methods at Lenovo.

Mine was a custom order - base model (FHD screen and i5) with 16gb of RAM and in silver.

      It's a really awesome laptop, but…

      • Lenovo aftersales and tech support is very average (takes 24-48 hours to respond to emails and then just points you to Windows forums or Lenovo pages for driver installs).
      • It chews through battery (approx. 10% per day) when shut down and in sleep mode (probably a manufacturing issue, my DOA issue, but not unheard of in some forums).
      • No SD card slot.
      • Speakers are a bit tinny due to awkward placement
      • Heaps of software updates out of the box.

If I didn't have this battery issue, the 920 would get a 8.5 out of 10 from me. If they fixed the other small issues and tech support, it could be the best laptop available at the moment.

The 20% off is back on and it is $1599 again. The only thing that still holds me from pulling the trigger is the 6th gen I7. Although I would only use it for youtube and chrome and will do a bit of gaming (since it has a 965m), but having a later gen of cpu will significantly extend its economic of life. It is still quite expensive for a 6th gen cpu, but I am aware it is still the cheapest in its own category.

  • Got it and returning it, The tablet part of the book doesn't charge. AND ONLY TWO CORES not FOUR

    • Good to know, thanks!

Looks like I'm not the only one. Sold 600 machines and like 10% are faulty. Not a good start
