        • @Sirocco: Yep and Netflix 4k HDR works perfectly on the android TV OS

        • @asa79:

If your still using Android 6 then you are delusional.

          http://www.mi.com/en/mibox/

          Go to specs..It says..

'Supports HDR10/HLG HDR processing (software upgrade required)'

        • @Sirocco: Well Netflix is seeing HDR in list, so I dont know

  • Does anyine know if Android TV has the NBA app? I just want this to stream league pass games as my laptop has died.

    • +2

It sure does, I do find the audio is slightly out of sync but as almost always watch in another room via a PC hooked up to a tv I haven't investigated the cause. I am sure there would be some simple fix. It is great for netflix, plex, kodi and youtube due to the really bloody good mic/voice commands through the remote.

  • Also I think I read somewhere that it has Chromecast so you can stream from Android devices. Is that correct?

    • +1

yup, it has chromecast built into it

      • Unfortunately less reliable than a real Chromecast. And Netflix is a royal pain to cast if you use multiple profiles - the Mi Box asks which one to use. Which defeats the whole point of operating it entirely from the phone.

  • I got mine barely used for $50. Pretty happy with what it can do. Will be getting IPTV once we move and that should do us well.

  • +2

I bought 5 with a previous deal, equated like $80ea. 3 for family & friends. Other two for myself. Already had one. Zero complaints. Best bang for buck gadgets I’ve ever seen.

Problem is… one has a dead remote… now what?!

Don’t want to buy local, and then claim the dead remote was theirs.

  • I just returned mine to LightintheBox that I bought at this price last month. I could not get the Netflix app to work due to HDCP issues. I tried multiple TVs and monitors and even a HDMI splitter to try and strip out the HDCP but it refused to play more than 10 sec before the error message. Quite a common issue which I only found out about after getting the error.

Well built and designed unit. I have asked for a replacement rather than refund so fingers crossed I get a better unit next time. Pay with Paypal to use the refund on return shipping as the return postage was $30

    • I have the same problem. The ancient TV doesn't support HDCP which netflix on this device needs to play for more than 10 seconds.

I uninstalled the android tv version of netflix and sideloaded the normal android netflix app which does work but I need a keyboard/mouse to use the interface as the remote control can't simulate a touchscreen.

Kodi works great - I can play everything from my NAS and YouTube is working. If only I could find a fix for the native netflix app then this would be the perfect device for me.

      • I believe that has also removed your ability to play FullHD and 4K which would suck

      • Weird I have an 11 year old LCD tv and it works fine.

        • +1

This is a common issue and well described online. The native netflix app does a hdcp check on your tv and if it fails the DRM check stops playing after 10 seconds.

Sideloading drminfo will report on the hdcp compatibility of the tv.. I have tried on 3 tvs and none satisfy the drm check.

So I'm stuck using the tablet version of netflix as it works (doesn't have the drm check).

There's no other simple firmware fix - but some people have used a 4k hdcp splitter as it may fool the signal.

        • @Pksw:

Maybe check for firmware fix on the TV side too. Just sounds weird you got it on 3 TVs where this is the first time I've heard of this issue. Although I have no doubt that it is probably a well documented one as you describe.

    • That would be a TV issue I think. What kind of TV have you got? Mostly likey doesn't have the support so try a firmware update (possibly through USB if not available with OTA)

      • +1

It can be random between mi box devices. Many reports of same setup, two different mi boxes and different results.

        https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/6mapz0/mibox_net…

        • Not sure if anyone comes back to these but just got my replacement Mi Box and it works flawlessly. Same cord, same tv…everything exactly the same but new box that just works. No HDCP issues playing Netflix or sideloaded Foxtel Now

    • Anyone experiencing this should also make sure they try with the included HDMI cable first as I found it worked with Netflix when others didn't.

  • can we watch China/Korea/HongKong drama/movies with this? Thx.

    • Yes, you could use legitimate apps for KDrama like Dramafever or Viki which you can install off the app store. You would need a VPN to access all content.

For China and Hong Kong your best bet is to sideload an unofficial app. #Dramania or ADrama are two.

Also sideload an app called Blockada which will block all the ads that come with the unnofficial apps.

  • Does anybody who already owns one of these know if all Aus FTA catchup apps are available on it?

    • +1

No they are not. There is an add-on for Kodi that gives you catch up shows, but not in a nicely presented app.

    • I've had varied success. TenPlay and ABC Iview work great, 9Now works but needs a mouse, SBS and Freeview crash, never tried 7.

You'll need to sideload them except for TenPlay which is on the playstore.

      • Or just cast them from your phone. TenPlay is (iirc) the only one that can't cast but, as you point out, it has a native ATV app anyway.

  • How old is this box now? when is a new version gonna be out

  • Sorry, one more question for those that know.

I’m currently running Kodi on my raspberry pi with Hyperion. To get the LEDs to work I had to run 3 cables to the GPIO on the Pi.

Assuming this won’t be possible on this device?

    Thanks again!

  • Be careful if u want to use this for youtube, it might work or it might not. I bought one last month and it doesn't work on most of youtube video, you have to install 3rd party youtube to make it work. Lots people have this problem and there's nothing u can do about it, do a search in mi's forum. They concluded its hardware error.

  • If you select AUD is your card charged in AUD at the stated AUD price? Do you get a better price using card like 28 Degrees vs regular credit card ?

  • -1

I bought one last sale, not very impressed. its hard to customize and seems like a gimped version of a $40 box i bought for a xmas present. the UI sucks and i cant get a launcher to work properly with it.

    • -2

That's Android TV, nothing to do with the hardware.

    • Here are few things that helped improve it a bit for me

      • google how to turn off the MI Notification Bar
      • turn off notifications for apps that you dont use
      • Disable all the google apps you dont use
      • If you sideload get an app called TVApp Repo so you can create new tiles for any sideloaded app

After doing that it isn't that bad, provided you dont have heaps of apps.

  • This vs the Nvidia Shield TV Pro ? "If price isn't a issue"

    • Shield 100%
I own both, they are not at same lvl.

    • This is a 5th of the price for a reason. Ignoring all the extra functionality and better support for the shield it will do all the basic stuff much smoother.

No need to go for the pro though over the standard one though.

    • Depends on requirement, for games nvidia, for movies this will do just fine, can play any size movie at moment

    • +1

If you want Youtube 4k HDR, this. nVidia doesn't even support the updated VP9 codec.

    • If price isn't an issue, do I get a Focus or a Ferrari? :)

I'd always get the Shield. It can be rooted (even LineageOS-ed if you're that way inclined), plays fairly decent games, has USB 3 and gigabit LAN, and is far more likely to be updated.

It isn't even close. Nor are the prices, unsurprisingly.

  • +1

RVT7USIRMAR gets you a bigger discount than MITVBOX4. Just got it for $82 shipped. Courtesy of dawn99 on Whirlpool.

  • Just noticed no AU plug adapter. Is everyone just buying an adapter? Seen some deals come with an AU adapter previously..

  • This box doesn't support automatic frame-rate switching in apps, which is annoying. You can manually adjust it though, and it does support 24hz output.

It also would occasionally reset the resolution and framerate to 1920x1080i@50Hz (yeah, 50hz interlaced!) at times. Never figured out why.

  • I wouldn't mess about with the cheap version, go for the deluxe https://www.lightinthebox.com/official-international-version…

  • My little box has left Hong Kong, but is apparently having a nice holiday in Frankfurt, Germany before coming back again to Australia. Maybe it's an early Oktoberfest.

I will never understand the (ill)logistics of international shipping.

    • Haha same. Don't get the logic either.
