    You’re funny!

  • Sorry if obvious, but will this connect via the Xiaomi Smart home gateway (the one that comes with the 5-in-1 kit) so it can be used to trigger automation rules set up from the mi home app?

    • +1

No. You can connect to it via bluetooth direct from your phone or via Wifi through a Xiaomi Bluetooth gateway (usually the bedside lamp acts as the bluetooth gateway, their normal gateway doesn't do this)

      • Thanks - just saw a YouTube video about it and looks like the only Bluetooth gateway compatible with it at the moment is the bedside lamp,
If I wanted to set up automation rules.

Looks like I’ll need to wait for the Zigbee based one to go on sale, but thought this looked good with the display screen.

Looking at the app, its standalone from the gateway. But yeah, you can use it in automation rules in the Mi Home app. Not sure about talking to it from other home automation systems though.

There's the Temperature and Humidity Sensor that has no screen which connects to the gateway through which you can connect with Domoticz, OpenHAB, HomeAssist etc. Its cheaper, but you can't use your eneloops in it :)

    Needs the router doesn’t it?

To send data back to China.

I’ll send you back to China

          Sure, need a holiday.

can i just use my phone to check the temp on this - or do you need the ap?

    • +8

      Reading the display also helps

      • +1

thats true - but I would like to keep it in my baby's nursery and find out the temp without opening the creaking door which wakes up the devil incarnate (my kid).

        • +8

Rather than spending $20 on this, spend $5 on WD40 at Bunnings.

        • If you have the app you can get the temp from the app
But I think it’s only within blue tooth range. Not 100% sure, I have it but I only use it for the temp display for the time being, no automations for now

        • @mikedenoob: I bought one of these and was pretty disappointed, mainly because the app is rubbish. I bought an indoor/outdoor weather station for a similar price - use the out door unit in the baby's room.

        • @norkle: why disappointed? What didn’t u like about it? The fact that it’s bluetooth you need to be in arrange to view on app?

        • @mikedenoob: the app is rubbish and clunky. For automation, you want something else, for usefulness get a weather station.

    • You can use the Mi Home app on your phone to connect to it and check the temperature.

    Cheaper with DD4off6

  • The X-Files S11E07 When Xiaomi goes bad

  • Bought one - lets see how it goes

  • This isn't a thermostat. It's a thermometer.

A thermostat links up with a central heating system by 12/240v.

The nest and ecobee are thermostats.

  • From the description, How To Install and Use:

After Install 'Mi Home', you need to set using local as "Mainland China", please do not select other locals.

    Wut?

a bunch of Xiaomi kit is not designed/tested for use outside of china, so they dont support it on the out of China servers. To see the difference, install the Mi Home app, connect to china and 'manually' add a device..

(singapore server supports a bunch of the cameras now plus the air purifiers. But still doesn't support the wifi power switch)

  • Good but only issue is if your light in on yeelight, then bluetooth gateway doesnt work

  • I can't pay when I get to the end of the order? Clicking paypal then pay now does nothing. I didn't get any email either….

  • Can you put this in the oven?

  • +1

Can this be used to collect the temperature data and present the temperature over time on a graph? The advertisement didn't show this function on the app.

I'm keen to collect the sensor data and keep it in the cloud available to view any time similar to the fitbit

  • Just received mine from DD4 today. I think there’s supposed to be a battery in the original pack but they removed it (no biggie, I have spare AAA eneloop). Looks much better in person than in photos.

I had some trouble connecting it to the iPhone via the MiHome app. In case you just want to connect it directly via Bluetooth and not using the automation features:

Turn Bluetooth on iPhone. Note you don’t need to find the Bluetooth device in the IOS settings
    Install MiHome app
Region MUST be China. They recommend United States server (and I have been using this server for a long time with my robot vacuum) but the thermometer cannot be selected unless you have China region selected
Add device and look for the picture of this thermometer
The app will tell you to press the Bluetooth button for two seconds on the thermometer, app will recognise and pair
