Costco looks to be open to anyone tonight for a $5 donation. If you've been wanting to check it out, I'd suggest trying it first to see if it's worth the full membership.

Because donation suggests it's going to a cause.. No further details, but I'd doubt it donating to them..
Nothing stopping people doing as Dezeption suggests and separately donating $5 to a charity of their choice.
I doubt your $5 'donation' to Costco can be used for your own taxes. More likely Costco will use it (and everyone else's) for theirs.
However, if you do as Newdad suggests you will get your entry for free - and deductability for your $5.
Depending on your marginal tax rate that could be a benefit to you of just under 50%.
That's the Ozbargain way.@blaircam: You aren't donating to Costco
Most likely Good Friday appeal. I went yesterday and they asked me for a donation at the checkout.
$5?? I wouldn't pay 5c
That’s a donation to WCH Foundation
Womens' and Children's Hospital Foundation who have provided more than $30 million to the WCH over the past ten years, and are committed to ensuring that mums, children and their families have access to the very best in medical care, hospital facilities and support services at a time when they need it most. Our goal is to inspire our community to invest in health care and medical research at the WCH.
Consider making a monthly gift.
Do you get to buy anything while you're there ,
or is there a tour.
To the left you will see toilet paper mountain , and ahead some of the homeless people who live here for $60 a yearDo you get a receipt?
Or do Costco get to present WCH with a bucket of money and claim it as a deduction?Mmmmm
That's a good point actually.
If its all about a "good cause", then there's no reason you couldn't donate directly to the organisation and at least get a tax deduction for it.
Because you know for sure Costco will write it off for the same purpose, AND get all the credit for 'raising it'.On that basis, still better to buy a membership and then return it, than to pay $5.
You'll save up to $2.42 (being that if you donate directly you get a tax deduction and assuming higher tax bracket), but a $2.42 saving is still a saving. Is this really an "Ozbargain" then, since a cheaper alternative is available?

Actually, they would need to add the $5 to their income as they are not a registered charity and asking people to pay to enter the store…
So after they claim the expense, they will not be better off…
So assuming that's the case, it's not a donation at all then.
The only exception would be if WCH have their own collectors at the door. In which case a receipt may be possible.

Not for tax purposes, unless Costco has registered to become a charity… Have they?

Perhaps, but I haven't seen any details to show that will be happening…
Do you get a receipt?
It wouldn't matter… you won't be able to claim it as Costco are not a registered charity.
To claim a deduction you need to donate directly to the hospital and the hospital would need to provide the receipt.
jv: Tax Attorney
new series starts tonight on Channel 9
Last time I went to one of these the charity was set up at the door taking the money directly themselves and issuing receipts.
Never been to costco but will probably make a trip, is it generally worth the $50ish or is there little to be saved vs colesworth?
If you live that way, it's worth it.
You'd likely make your money back just buying fuel for a year.Easily make your money on the fuel….ifs why I continue it.
It'll take 3 hours to get served
Why when you can open a membership and if you don't like it get a full refund
