Was looking at trolley jacks and saw this combo deal, about $108 if purchased separately. Would only be suitable for smaller cars given the load rating.

Depending on your vehicle type, but generally about 100-150mm in past the scissor jack points is a rail about 80-100mm wide that runs the length between the front and rear wheel assemblies.
That has more than enough integrity to place the stands without being too close to the centre of the vehicle.
However. You should consult your vehicle handbook or more professional sources than some jackass on the internet, especially if you are putting any bodypart under a vehicle.
and many have used these pinch welds to place the stands underneath and many have been bent. I've modified my jack stands to now use those pinch welds.Otherwise, on a unibody I check where there are double skin welds and jack up there.
However, I never lie under the car, without both jack stands, a tyre underneath the car and the jack still attached (not bearing much weight) but swivelled to the side.
It's a good price but beware that this jack may be too high to fit under many car jacking points and because it's short you don't get much lift even if it will squeeze under. The low profile one would be better in most instances…
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/ToolPRO-Low-Profile… - currently on special at $70 but I've seen it as low as $50 previously. I bought one then to add to my collection of trolley jacks and it works well.
Yeah the jack is crap…
I've used it under the centre jacking point at the front of the car - but the jack at it's highest lift is still not enough to get jack stands on either side behind the front wheels.
FYI working height range: 85 - 375mm for the low profile one.
375mm is a bit on the low side, I would say 500mm+ is the minimum to get most jack stands under if your car is low!
I know the height range, I've got one along with several other jacks of varying sizes. It's a cheap jack aimed at the home user for general stuff. Sure you can buy better ones but you're looking at much greater cost.
My point is that in most instances it works fine for the cars I've used it on including smaller SUVs, e.g. Mazda Tribute, Honda CRV etc. If I really next extra height I've got another workshop jack that's rated at 3500kg and yes that goes higher but I only need to use that on larger 4x4s e.g. LR Discovery etc or where I really need to get maximum access height.
Right now I have 5 sets of jack stands to hand and 4 are around 300/320mm at their lowest point with another at 400mm but those are workshop spec 5T stands. I also have a set rated at 10 tons and yes are 500mm but then they were used by my father in a full commercial workshop.
For regular home use, and that's what we're talking about here, I reckon the low profile jack works well with most domestic stands. Frankly I get a bit concerned re stability with high stands and prefer to use ramps, often with extra bits of cut hardwood sleepers to enable a more gentle gradient.
Just FYI a lot of SCA branded jacks/stands are recalled.. I'd stick to a reputable brand.
Its your life after all.
I'd need my mother-in-law to get out of the car before using this.
under car creeper looks to be about 60% off atm as well…would make a nice addition to the combo for an extra $30 odd?
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/SCA-Garage-Creeper-…I've got a similar one but frankly never use it. I find most jobs under a car require you to be able to move around freely and just I find them too restrictive. Plus, of course you always drop a bolt etc that rolls under the damn thing…
Got 2 of these and 1 of the sca 2500kg jacks down at my father's, who is a Diesel fitter and mechanic. Originally brought them for spares so we didn't have to carry jacks from place to place around the property, they get used at least 1-2 twice a week for the last 3 years and still going fine. Seem to be a handy budget jack, cant speak for the stands, use a hoist if we need to work under the vehicle.
I have some SCA jack stands but what concerns me is where do I place them? The jack stands have a wide v shape but where the manual says to jack up using the car scissor jack is on the edge with that pressed metal piece. The scissor jack has an opening for this pressed metal to sit inside, however if I use jack stands on this edge won't it risk bending it?
I don't want to use jack stands on another part of the underbody as I'm not sure whether it's strong enough to hold the weight of the car in those areas.
