"The latest figures show overall piracy has reduced by 25 per cent year-on-year, according to the Australian Site-Blocking Efficacy Report produced by online analysis company INCOPRO".

      http://www.news.com.au/technology/online/piracy/shamelessly-…

Alternatively use of VPN \ Non-ISP DNS \ Newsgroup \ Private Torrent services have grown 25 per cent year-on-year.

      • Talking about foxtel connection

        • Get my head out of the gutter.

Getting closer with Foxtel now, but still someway to go.

      • "He blames the search engine giant for being partly responsible for the Australian film Lion, among others, being illegally downloaded and streamed more than a million times.
“That’s coming straight out of the bloodstream of a Sydney-based production company,” he told news.com.au."
Old mate Burke is in La La Land if he thinks downloaded content = revenue lost. There is no way you can say that every time a movie is downloaded you've lost a paying customer, it's just not the case.

  • +6

Only Because there's none real competition out there other than fetch tv

    • I wouldn't really classify Fetch TV as competition to Foztel since Foxtel have more broadcasting rights

    • Netflix would be considered competion in terms content not including live sport of course

  • I wonder if Foxtel direct will price match (probably). Dealing through Telstra is a bit of a pain, and they are not as flexible with offering discounts every time you call the disconnect line.

  • can you add sports? if so how much

  • +5

    Pros:
    Includes their 1Tb PVR
Includes either Movies (but are they old rubbish ones?) OR Drama.

    Cons:
    HD is $10 extra p.m.
Anything decent costs extra (Entertainment Plus, Documentaries, Kids each $10. Movies or Drama (if you want the one you didn't pick above) $20. Sport $29!

So the basic deal really I can't see being any better than Netflix, Stan et al. at twice the cost.

    • +1

sucks for those like me who just want NRL! id gladly pay 20 a month to for just sports

      • +1

just a headsup free for telstra customers

        • yeah but only on mobile.. i want it in HD on TV. There's free streams online through not quite legal means, but its a bit patchy and sometimes the feed doesn't show the score, tackle count, time etc. When cast to a TV or HDMI output, it's quite bad quality on a 65" telly

        • Free on crownbet app as well

        • @Crowdedthehouse:AFL is probably the same with cast

    • +2

Sometimes I prefer "channels" like A&E and Sci-Fi to picking something to watch.
But be warned if you used to NetFlix high-resolution video and audio, the IQ3 outputs 1080p however the broadcasts are 1080i max with most only 720p.
So if you have a high-quality setup, the difference is Noticable (especially the audio). If you are use to NetFlix 4k then you will be disappointed.

Foxtel have some good programs for the children (young teens), but mine could not handle the adverts, and found the concept of a "Channel" strange. They prefer to watch what they want when they want. We don't have free to air (miss it occasionally for the news)

Ohh how old I am feeling.

    • +1

      HD is $10/month?

That's ludicrous in this day and age.

Is there any reason you wouldn't just go with Foxtel Now if you really want Foxtel (i.e. HBO content)?

  • +6

so still $39/month for Sports + HD?

Can't believe they still charge for HD

    • Looks like, plus the $20 for basic = $59. That's how I read the terms.

    • +1

We didn't have the HD option. I told Foxtel that their iQ3 stb kept stuffing up by recording the HD channel version instead of the selected SD version of the channel and we ended up with no recording even though I always checked the record setup before airtime. (FTA EPG guide is lousy and always out of sync with actual on air time). Solution, they (Foxtel) upgraded to HD at no charge. The iQ3 has had so many issues that they will do anything (Foxtel) to keep you. May be worth the same complaint to Tel$tra if you want to try it.

    • I know right? regular HD is over 10 years old now….HD should be "standard" with them charging for "4K" instead.

  • +4

A cost to self-install lol? Why not call it a delivery fee?

  • The CIS says:

    One-off equipment fee:
Foxtel iQ3 recordable device (HD device available nationally and
includes 1TB hard drive for storing recorded content) – $125
Foxtel iQ2 recordable device (HD device available nationally and
includes 320GB hard drive for storing recorded content) – $75

Also it's a 12 month contract (according to the CIS), and as pointed out doesn't include HD.

They really need to update that CIS if it's going to actually give you some information about this deal (and they say to look at it for 'full terms and conditions').

  • +4

"but Foxtel do have over 1 million customers" - and they still suck, and can't make apps for sh**

    • -3

That must mean 1 million people are on welfare.

  • -1

Whats the diff vs the one included in opts bundle? I got espn, kids channel, etc.

    • Channels included, and shows on said channels.

  • is it a streaming service? contents are downloaded via internet? we have a very slow ADSL2+ connection, that's a big problem for my place to get Netflix, Youtube at home if more than 1 user is streaming/playing games.

    • +1

No it’s not, it’s cable or satellite.

      • So I can self install a satellite?

        • +1

You’d need to have that already installed. Otherwise pay $100 installation. I don’t know why the deal is self install as many people would need full installation.

  • Even when Foxtel is on sale is still pricing itself out of the market!

Although i agree they do have over 1 million subscribers i'd say the majority of them would be pubs/clubs/sports bars etc opposed to individual houses.

In the current market foxtel is way over priced

    • -7

      Not everyone is poor Pastry

      • LOL has nothing to do with being poor it has everything to do with simply being competitive in what is a far more competitive market then it was 5-6 years ago.

Foxtel competition has increased with the rise of netflicks, and the introduction of Stan and Fetch but there pricing still reflects a company that has a monopoly market.

Even FTA has up'd there game with a number of new channels

It is the same problem Telstra has thinking it is able to basically charge 5-10times more then other telcos for a similar service.

        • Having just switched from Optus to Telstra, in the areas I use my mobile they are not similar. Optus is so patchy, slow and has numerous spots with no coverage in Sydney and down the coast. Telstra has pretty much constant fast connection. Well worth the extra $$ IMHO.

        • +1

          @cnrmlj:

Yeah there's a reason why I still pay a premium for telstra network. Not everyone lives in the cbd. :(

  • +1

Not a bad deal but you still have to pay an extra $29 per month for sport which is what a large amount of people want Foxtel for. Hence why it's so expensive. Still a pretty good deal considering the amount of money I pay for every other streaming service.

  • +12

So I got 3 months foxtel now with one pack for free with my telstra internet. Was watching it the other day and, lo and behold, there are effing commercials in the on demand programming. WTF foxtel. Will never support these double dipping asshats. They're the reason I can't just pay for a subscription to HBO go or watch NBC programs directly. Bunch of (profanity).

  • +10

The hate for Foxtel is well justified. More ads than FTA and outrageous fees for decent content like sport (not to mention HD isn't standard).

Netlfix and their original content is getting better and better by the day. Hopefully they'll out license Foxtel one day (in Australia).

    • -4

They air half the amount of paid advertisements per hour of programming than free to air.

Decent content like sport (which is often aired without commercial interruption) costs them many times more per subscriber than trash Netflix produced content and the price has to reflect that.

      • +3

Never thought I'd see the day where someone is defending Foxtel. Also paying to watch ads is just an insult in my opinion.

        • +1

I’m not even defending them, I’m just stating facts. The fact is they have fewer ads. The fact is what they show costs them far more than anything their “competitors” do.

        • @tp0:

Just to reiterate. The only thing Foxtel spends more on is sports. Which in turn is their main customer target.

Netflix isn't even in the sports Business. Yet. $6.3b spent on original content this year alone is no small gesture. In saying that netlfix is its own entity, Foxtel is but a tentacle to the body that is News corp. That should speak to greed more than I can explain.

      • That's a nice poetic twist you put there tp0 (if it's even true). But it's a load of rubbish.

FTA channels like channel 9 I understand, because they run their channels for free, requiring paid advertisments to provide content.

Foxtel on the other hand get their hands on paid advertisments as well as customer's money. One of their original selling points was no more ads.

        • I'd suggest that ABC and SBS have minimal adverts, we already pay for ABC, it has a lot of content on there alone, in HD too at times!

I generally can no longer watch channel 7/9/10, as the ads are constant, and make a 10 minute show, last 30 minutes, with 'reactions' and 'thoughts' from several 'contestants' in cooking/review/dating/critic shows. I do love watching show's with little advertising however, ABC and SBS movies make me happy.

  • +4

but Foxtel do have over 1 million customers

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argumentum_ad_populum

    • Or 1 million viewers?

    • I wonder how many got x months free. Before the streaming services. I did pay for a month of Foxtel at the end of a number of months free. I think it was to catch the end of a season of Dexter and Breaking Bad. I have had ~6 months free a few times now. It used to be okay when there was nothing else on, but the streaming services are better for that and no ads.

  • Does the min cost $265 include any recordable device? The offer picture at the bottom of the 'Go to Deal' link clearly shows IO3 + Ent + Movies/Drama package = $20 per month. There is a $25 self installation cost. There is no mention or inclusion of one-off equipment of $125 in the picture, unlike the CIS. Am I missing anything?
How do we access Foxtel content if IQ2 or IQ3 is not included?

    • +1

The IQ3 is the equipment/device that shows Foxtel and records everything. This is included in the deal. Keep in mind that you're really only renting the equipment now days. When you cancel you have to return the box or you're charged an extra equipment fee.

If your premises already has Foxtel cables then you can get the self install option. If you don't have Foxtel cables running to your house then you need to pay the extra one-off technician installation fee.

      • Can you rent/use the IQ3 on the "IO3 + Ent + Movies/Drama" package for 12 months and pay only $265?

        • +1

Yep. Just keep in mind that at the end of the 12 months if you end your Foxtel subscription then you'll have to return the IQ3 box. Not that there's any point keeping it if you don't have Foxtel.

  • does the IQ3 have a free to air tuner like the original mystar box did?

  • +2

I just want AFL god damn it.

    • This and the AFL app is shit and is very low quality, if it even works.

  • Question… if you only want the AFL, can you not just pay $4.95p/m for the AFL app subscription given the AFL app appears to be featured on Telstra TV?

    • AFL livepass is restricted to a phone size screen on your tablet or phone. Doesn't even take up the full size of an ipad mini screen

      • +1

Can't you chromecast to TV or HDMI out to TV?

        • Chromecast works on an android phone/tablet

Have to boot up the stream and then start the cast or it doesn't work, quality is pretty meh but watchable

  • The us what I’ve beem liking for. All I really want is walking dead and GOT and they are now both on showcase. Thanks!!!!!!!

    • Well we still have over a year for GoT and as another TWD zombie, why havn't we turned that shit off yet?

      • -3

Good point, but TWD just returned Monday. Spoiler. Carl died.

        • Why be a dick.

  • +1

They have 1 million customers? And popularity is supposed to be any kind of indicator of quality? You do know that Achy Break Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus was the biggest selling album here in 1992, right?

And that Carlton Draught, VB and XXXX are the best selling beers in the country?

  • Only the tech noobs use foxtel
