Weren't the minis consistently about $40 for ages

    • Maybe when they first released, now they're about $75

    • Technically they were always around $80 but they had the buy one get one free thing for ages. Wish I jumped on it back then

    kogan $139 delivered
    less
new account $10 credit via referral
$50 voucher via ebay (less ~$10)

This is cheapest, but it is a grey import with international plug and adapter. The plug pack is quite bulky, so understand what you are getting as I think the size and weight could let it become easily dislodged from an adaptor.

      • Does the international plug have a ground/3rd foot?

        • Not sure, I have only seen pics of it plugged in.
Kogan often sends UK plugs, which are built like tanks, but if it is a euro or US plug it will hang out.

        • @mskeggs: just googled it. 2 prong US style plug. It's a very flat plug. Unless it was hidden, Any plug adapter would make it look bulky.

        • @altomic: Kogan can't legally send you a unit with an adaptor as they have a corporate basis in Australia. (recent ruling on corporations importing electrical products into australia - need to meet SAA for declared items.

Kogan send you a full sealed US unit and an additional power-pack for the unit.

For Google Home, they send a white power pack in addition to the main box, Model BSYYF120300SW
For the minis, they send a usb charger (2 port) with a generic white USB A to micro cable as well as the boxed US retail box.

BSYYF120300SW was specifically tested and rated for AU compliance same with their two port usb charger - both declared items.

I'm waiting on the Google Max over the Google Home Speaker. Seems worth the wait.

        • @MorriJ: Do you have a picture of the home power pack? Also does getting the US version impact functions at all or will it localise once you set up?

        • +1

          @tdth99:

          First response: https://ibb.co/eh85Fx
Camera didnt really focus properly but you get the idea. Its sitting on a google home box. Can do a photo with US power pack side by side if needed, but pain uploading; so only if needed.

Its about double the size of the US charger +/-

Second response: >>Also does getting the US version impact functions at all or will it localise once you set up?

No difference in models. When you setup the US one, you will be prompted that the wifi might not work in your country, but that's one channel from what I understand, it all works fine.
Previously you would also need to do a bit of a hack to fix the live radio streaming; no longer. Just ask it to play a channel and it will grab it from tune-in.

In short, no difference - she understands our accents and is localised once you set it up.

        • @MorriJ: Does she keep the US accent or change to the Australian voice? Also would be interesting to see if you get US firmware. Ie. The US version has storytime (reads fairytales) but I can't get it to do it on Australia version.
And would you lose some things like the fact that it will play ABC Australia news and integrate with Stan etc?
(sorry I don't mean to hijack the thread but figure it's relevant for people considering between the Allphones deal and a grey import - like me lol)

          @tdth99:

          Firmware:
          System firmware version: 111204
          Cast firmware version: 1.30.111204
          Language: English(Australia)
          Country code: US

When I ask her "Tell me a story about little red riding hood"

She goes and hits up wikipedia and tells me that its a story about xyz from abc time in def country.
Can't get it into storytime mode whatsoever.

          OK Google whats the news?
From ABC bulletin at 6pm today… phone prompts where do you want to get news from as well.

          Ok google, play triple-m
Streaming Sydney's 104.9 from tune in

It's the same features as Aussie editions, running US base code, AU language pack.

Honest opinion, it's the same thing, warranty is only concern. Warranty is RTB instead of to Google. They will replace your unit if you send it to US and have them ship to a US address or its RTB for it.

Google Home Australian stock carry 12m limited warranty with google direct.

$10 difference? $118.75 on ebay with pick5 vs this sort of price or Kogan and wait a week @ $89 [$79 with referral credit x 1] + coupon cost for 2 days.

@$88 i would go US version and wait a week on delivery.

  • As this tech develops, I wonder what tasks people use these for that render them increasingly more useful. What novel and surprisingly helpful ways are people here using these?
I have a Chromecast Ultra and am curious how it could integrate with that into my home.
    Thanks!

    • +1

You can ask it to play media on the chromecast. It is usually smart enough to be able to find the show or whatever just by name (OK google, play Game of Thrones) but if Netflix or whatever doesn't carry the show and Spotify has the soundtrack it occasionally gets mixed up.

      • Ahh okay, I figured it might have bugs like that somehow. I used google now on my phone to play a youtube vid on my chromecast and it correctly executed everything except knowing which device to send it to, even though the chromecast is the only such device on the network.

        • I didn't especially want a google home, but was over ruled by other house members. But I give it 8 out of 10 for the implementation. It is pretty good once you get used to it.

        • +1

That will depend on what you called your Chromecast. So renaming it to which room is beneficial.

    • +1

For me, I have the Google home together with 2 Chromecast (entertainment & bedroom) and 3 Chromecast Audio (entertainment/bedroom/living rooms).

Day to day use includes just asking about weather (in case it’s safe to do laundry the next day).

Playing a music (subscription need to either spotify or google play (google play includes youtube red)) to wherever room you’ll be spending. My chromecast audio is connected to home theatre speakers in entertainment room and Bose Soundlink in Living and Logitech Z623s in bedroom.

Playing a movie in either Bedroom or Entertainment (cec Tv required). Eg. preparing a snack in Kitchen and calling out to Google to start a Tv series I’m watching on which TV.

(Thinking of getting a 3rd Chromecast and another Tv for Kitchen setup)

Then also the usual Google telling me about news and also either playing (via phone or tablet cast) a radio station (local and international) and Tv shows or movies (local and international) via apps.

Others might also want to share their setups.

      • That is really neat, i like that you've really gone all out and tried to create the ecosystem that supports it to work how I imagine that google intended

You can get an IR transmitter and hook it up with Google Home, and also get some of those devices that turn power points on an off. I'm hoping to have the Google Home be able to turn on/off lights/aircon/TV and otherwise control aircon/TV.

      • +4

Google Home now controls Broadlink RM pro natively.
You can use it control any device(on/off) as long as you add it as lamp to Broadlink remote.
This includes RF and IR devices.

$139 at Kogan, https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/google-home-white/ if you add the Kogan voucher will be $89 as per previous kogan posts
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kogan-50-Off-120-Spend-Gift-Vouc…

    • Voucher costs money right? Wouldnt it be $89 + cost of voucher less referral credit?

      • maybe $99

        • Less the $10 when you refer yourself to a new account presumably?

  • I just can’t convince myself to test out Google Homs. Amazon Australia generously replaced my 1st Gen after the lack of firmware update and it’s just going to take more capability for me to pivot, Really want to test this out but can’t justify it.

    • Echo is so restricted compared to Google. Google has only restricted features like calling but that is understandable as telcos wouuldnt support it yet

Tho i only paid $59 for 2x echos, with the hope of controlling Sonos and was disappointed. Alexa is too picky with what you say, Google handles it alot beter

      • But from a HA point of view, isn't Echo better? I'm tossing up which to get, but primarily for HA. Not for "What's the weather / order me a pizza" commands..

        • Take note that you won't be able to use Spotify Free with an Echo. I was planning to get an Echo for the car as it has an audio out and can even connect to the car stereo using bluetooth (unless it requires you to input PIN combinations to pair).

        • I have both Echo and Google, for when Sonos skill is released, it will control my sonos, and google will cast to tvs

        • @cheapbloke: Spotify Free isnt support on any platform (sonos, google home or echo) that is spotify not the device

        • From a HA, you mean if the Google server is down, or amazon server is down?

I see that going be rare and i'm sure i can manually do something for that couple minutes ;)

        • @cheapbloke: Also you cant have two devices using the same spotify account, so if you were driving and playing spotify in the car, and your missus told your home echo to play something the music would move from car to your home echo, vice versa. Unless you set up each echo with a different spotify account

        • @cheapbloke: Ok cool, I have only been using sonos for music, and that doesnt support free spotify. Panadora was good until it left

        • @asa79: I use a Google Home to cast Spotify Free to a chromecast Audio connected to a Sonos.

        • @cheapbloke: So you buy a play:5 just to use a free version of Spotify?

        • @asa79:
I cast YouTube, listen to ripped CDs stored on a NAS as well.

        • @cheapbloke: Sonos handles media libraries and playlists natively

        • @asa79:
Of course it's done directly using Sonos as you can't cast media stored on NAS.

  • I can't seem to get the mini for $56 including postage. Comes out at $62.79. Am I missing something?

eBay does region based pricing for shipping. Asides from moving to Sydney, have no other suggestions for that one. If you are in sydney, it's free shipping, outside likely charged.
