Although popular, this brand is rather rubbish - cheap plastic with bad smell. Shame that we have limited choices here in Australia.

I think we need a graph of $avings vs Volume to tip-toe around the plastic smell. MathNerd?

      • Haha give me until tomorrow morning I'll have a nice graph for you.

    • Unless you have a different quality down there from what we get or you're comparing them to the likes of Lock & Lock I would tend to disagree with you, but then we're all entitled to our own opinion.

      • +2

Lock & Lock for one has better quality in comparison. You can tell from the smell and the plastic colour.

        • Yes, but Lock & Lock cost a fortune down there, that's if you can find them.
Personally, my Systema and Lock & Lock's don't smell, so I'll bow to your better knowledge on that point, nor do I believe you can tell the quality of a plastic utensil by its colour - feel yes, colour no, but then I'm no expert, just a consumer!

The $4.49 - Sistema Plasticware Shaker To Go is the best protein shaker I've ever used. Mine is still going strong and leak free after more than a year of daily use and dishwashering.

Ikea's glass food containers are the way to go.

Sistema is on sale every other week…

These are crap. Don't waste your money.

They don't seal, no where near airtight, and will leak if tipped.

Sistema was a New Zealand owned and manufactured brand. Recently sold and now being made in China

Recently sold and now being made in China

Your link states the new owners have agreed to keep the manufacturing in NZ. Please back up your claim that these are now made in China.

Founder, and 90 per cent owner, Brendan Lindsay turned down an initial offer from Newell Brands in 2014 because it would not commit to keeping the firm's manufacturing and 700 staff New Zealand based.

This year Newell tried again and after visiting Sistema's new Auckland factory, the company with a United States market capitalisation of US$22 billion (NZ$31b) agreed to all Lindsay's conditions.

It is interesting though - as part of the takeover they agreed to keep manufacturing in NZ and they have a 20 year lease on the building.. but I'd note that in reality there's no legally enforceable undertaking available. I don't think there's anything that actually stops Newell from changing its mind down the track (1-5 years?) - but it'd be destroying the brand.

I buy Sistema products simply because I'm willing to pay extra to support some manufacturing in AU/NZ where it's clearly a better product and a better company. Same reason I have Australian manufactured laundry baskets at home (it only cost $2 more to buy the aussie ones).

I'm surprised at the negative feedback on Sistema. Been using them for a few years now and have never noticed a 'plastic smell' beyond any new plastic item - which goes away after the first wash.

    • Sistema is also free of Bisphenol S.

You can tell by the plastic type, this is polypropylene rather than a polycarbonate (which requires some kind of bisphenol or alternative to basically hold it together). Polypropylene doesn't have known health risks.

You can tell by the resin identification code (in the recycling symbol), if it's 5 it's polypropylene, if it's 7 it's "other" and probably has bpa/bps in it. Or just the softness, food containers like this tend to be harder and don't bend much. Drink bottles that are soft are more likely to be polycarbonate.

Source: I got really drunk one night and spent hours reading about chemicals on wikipedia.

      • Here's some more reading for you:

"Our Sistema houseware range of food storage are manufactured from Polyolefin’s."

"Although it would appear that polyolefins would be safe in this regard, a survey of many popular polyolefin products, base resins, and additives has shown that the majority show significant estrogenic activity (EA), the most prevalent form of endocrine disruption. … we report the results of the first wide-ranging survey of the estrogenic activity of commercially available plastic products sold for food and beverage packaging and service, with a particular focus on products advertised to be free of BPA, and especially on presumably safe polyolefin materials and products. Surprisingly, we found that most of the surveyed products release chemicals having reliably-detectable EA —especially if exposed to common-use stresses." (Yaniger, S. I., Klein, D. J., & Bittner, G. D. (2011). Estrogenic activity in commercial food packaging- survey, causes, and cures)

  • I got the $3.5 3.58L one to store my batteries. The tray got compartments to sort batteries of different sizes, wife is impressed.

    It doesn't smell.

I prefer the glass containers by decor. Definitely heavier but they last so much longer.

I have only dropped one once and it cracked it was a sad. Day for me.

Only ever buy it half price too

Even the plastic decor leak proof ones are quality. Sistema are rubbish, put my lunch in it and it leaked all through my bag. The decor leak proof ones are just that, will only buy decor now.

I mourn the fact that they don't sell the 60L tubs in Australia anymore. They were the best ones around for my needs. I've considered importing them but the shipping is just too much. Really need to find another 60L tub of similar form and quality at ~$15. Not an easy find.

      • Oh yes I want to buy those big tubs too, quite handy when moving a lot of loose items and they stack really well.

        • Speedz: Yeah they stack great.

      • Yes those ones that have been out of stock in Australia for at least 6 months.

        • Ah if I knew, I would have bought more. I recently broke one and was looking for replacements.

Any word as to why they stop selling them?

        • @Speedz:

Absolutely no idea! I was shocked they stopped. Maybe its a freight thing, less margin on the bigger boxes?

        • @serpserpserp:

Your guess are as good as mine.

It's hard to find good storage boxes I must say and those cheaper ones are nasty in quality.
