Available in captivities ranging from 1 TB to 6 TB

I always try and source my HDD from captivities, the ones from the shops just don't seem as good.

8 TB captivities are very rare, I assume that's why they omitted it from the description.

      Captivities?

      • +1

        Yeah.

        • Sorry I was questioning what is it exactly Captivities? Could you elaborate pls

        • @knobbs:

          I think it's a typo for "capacities".

        • @ronnknee: facepalm I get it now…. Sarcasm doesn't go well over the internet haha

          @knobbs:

I thought it was sarcasm the first time but when you asked the second time, I couldn't tell anymore.

You can get the Seagate Ironwolf 8TB NAS drive for $316 with the current 20% off Ebay Promo code.

yes, but they're Seagates.. no one with a NAS will touch them with a 10 foot pole. Nothing but data loss on your horizons with Seagates

      • +3

Havent found my Seagates to be any worse than other brands I have owned. I have 14 x 5TB drives at the moment in my home server, no issues. The Ironwolfs are very good. I have also owned 16 of the 4TB models, I had one failure in 3 years that was covered under warranty.

I do agree ST3000DM001 models were quite problematic when you look at the Backblaze drive data, the newer stuff is fine. Their 8-12TB models are some of the best on the market.

Any self respecting NAS owner will run RAID or some form of redundancy, you always plan on drive failure when you run a 24/7 setup. No drive manufacturer is immune from defects.

  • Think I'll just wait till the 12tb HDDs decrease in price, need 4, for my g8.

Just as an FYI I needed to upgrade the drives in my QNAP NAS (previously had 4TB Red's) and wanted to replace with 8TB drives.

I bought one of these WD 8TB Red's from Amazon (paid US$247 at the time - Jan 28th) but I also ordered one of the WD 8TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive's (because they are way cheaper - US$184 - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LQQHLGC/ref=oh_aui_deta… ) to see if I could schuck the drive from it and use in the NAS.

FYI it works perfectly (the drive in the MyBook is labelled as a WD80EZAZ compared to the original standalone WD Red which is a WD80EFZX - but as far as the QNAP is concerned it worked perfectly).

I since ordered two more of the MyBooks and extracted the drives and my NAS is now fully populated with the 8TB drives.

Also on the suggestion to use the Seagate drives - I considered this but had read the 7200RPM drives are way noisier in a NAS so preferred the quieter 5400RPM models.

    • Thanks for the info, I noticed MyBook also has 3 years warranty, I suspect if it is broken, you need to re case them and send it off to the support overseas?

      • Probably unlikely to get support I suspect (given that you've opened the case and presumably voided warranty).

I tested each drive (whilst it was still in the case) with a full drive test before opening the case and removing the drives.

I guess it's the risk you take when a) ordering drives from overseas and b) shucking drives out of an external case - however I figure the drives are way cheaper than the bare drives (especially when they are 40% off like they currently are) so if need be I can afford to buy a whole extra drive as a spare and still be ahead.

        • I flid my flong in and shucked it good and hard with no care for the future.

        • +4

If you get RMA denied you can try to say that you shucked the drive to attempt data recovery.

          It's worked for me before.
